Wow, that was super useful! I have been using FreeCAD for five years now and it was a pain sometimes. I just changed all the settings as you did and I already know that they will avoid me a lot of headaches! Thank you so much!
Thank you very much! I'm new in the Free Cad and your tutorials are so great ! You got new subscriber here.
Glad you like it!
I want to ask if I switch from Fusion 360 to Freecad what navigation style should I choose?
Hi, don't be afraid to experiment. They have nice descriptions for all controls. I like gesture and it will probably be closest to fusion
Great video. 3d files should always be exchanged as STEP/STP whenever possible, since it is a very clean format with infinite definition. It's like STLnis a JPEG file with finite definition, whereas STP is like a vector file with infinite definition. Not a big fan of exchanging files as 3MF - it's like sharing photos with your friends packaged as PDF - it makes a lot of sense in certain situations, but the vast majority of times you'd just share JPG. By the way, STEP/STP is not a parametric 3d file format. But it is far more precise and editable than mesh/STL.
Thanks! In the sense that STEP files do not contain parameters - yes, they are not parametric. In the sense that they can be used in parametric CAD software as is with no modifications while edges, faces and vertices are valid geometry - lets say they are parametric cad compatible.
I just realize even in the v1 of freecad we can only mirror features not "body" in the part design workbench, It's such a let down
Hey, don't be discouraged. Part design workbench lists multiple bodies as experimental feature. So it is expected that there would not be a lot of features around this new capability. Give it some time
Hi, great video! in 3:40 you create a sketch, how do you place the origin in the centre? Thank you
Hey, I designed that part with center to be on origin. It retains that relationship to coordinates. Otherwise you would need to measure your part and figure out center on your own to put it on origin
Amazing!
Thanks!
I can tell a Latvian just by hearing the voice
You got me 😅
Thanks for your videos, very helpful and great for learning freecad. i would love more videos on designing workflows
Thank you!
Blender is another free option.Plasticity workflow is limited. I found shapr3d to be the easiest and if I had to pay for a CAD that would probably be this one. Learning Freecad 1.0 now, looks very complete, powerful and improved UX, but still steeper learning curve tan shapr3d
Yeah, use what suits you best 👍. Just one note - Blender is not CAD, but it has cad sketcher addon
FreeCAD should be taught in engineering schools, in the same way linux is used in computer siencie degrees.
While I see your point, I do not believe that anyone who went through engineering school would struggle with FreeCAD. It utilizes classic and strict modeling approach most major CAD packages were built around. This approach is taught in engineering schools and is transferable between CAD packages. While major players evolved and became more approachable, FreeCAD learning curve is still steep. I see general public struggle with FreeCAD while engineers do truly amazing stuff with it.
@RoadSideMaker yees i also get what you mean. But the main advantage i see of this software being taught, or at least mentioned in engineering schools, is from a marketing point of view. Most of my collegues don't even know this software exists! Why do schools have to market comercial solutions (solidworks in my case), for free, instead of this amazing project? It would help bring a lot more people into freecad and i bet lots of students would contribute to it. And universities should adopt freecad, or at least mention it from my point of view. From a technical POV, i agree that it really isn't that diferent and knowledge can be transfered from almost any CAD package to freecad. Thank you for the video btw!
You are welcome! I look at this situation this way - universities main obligation is to prepare you for the job market. Solidworks holds the biggest piece of the market. So there is likelihood that majority of job offers will require Solidworks experience and one is more likely to be accepted if experience of Solidworks or even CSWA is present.
When is the release 1.0 coming out? Edit: i mean stable release
Hey, it was not announced yet. I do not see any blockers on GitHub, they are ironing out bugs right now. Hopefully we see the release this year.
It's going to be really nice when we are done with the release candidate part of the move to production schedule, and a flatpak gets generated of the production software that is marked as an actual upgrade of 0.21.2 so that we, who don't trust that the final release won't have breaking effects on models created in the RC releases, from experience, can start using all these wonderful tips.
Yeah, hope they are able to release stable soon. They had only one blocker last week.
What do you think of Ondsel, which seems to be FreeCAD with a nicer UI config by default?
I have Ondsel installed but haven't used it extensively. Only thing different is that it has glass ui enabled buy default (Model tree "floating" in viewport and not in separate panel) Ondsel team actively pushed functionality to FreeCAD main. So I really do not see difference between these versions. However, Ondsel announced that they are closing the business. They were not successful in establishing sustainable paying customer base for the Lens product. Unfortunate as they helped FreeCAD a lot (Refreshed sketcher and assembly workbench to name a few)
@@RoadSideMaker Thank you. I just liked the default look of Ondsel a lot better than FreeCADs (different color scheme, buttons instead of tabs, grid enabled by default, nicer toolbar-handles and -arrangement, tasks on the right etc). I didn't know they'll shut down 😟
Yeah, but they told that now former employees will continue to contribute to FreeCAD main
One setting you missed is 'pick radius', which makes it easier to select things (edges, points, etc.) without having to click on the exact pixel, and without changing the visual size. I would also leave Draft workbench enabled - there are a lot of useful tools in there, especially if you're importing DXF or STEP files from other programs. Upgrade/downgrade, draft to sketch, move/rotate/scale, and text tools. Mesh workbench is also needed if you want to import and modify STLs. Great guide, I'll definitely try your recommendations of moving the Task panel to the other side of the window, and section view by default.
Great points, thank you!
Great video. Also, raise the volume of your microphone a little.
Thank you and noted!
Another great video. Appreciate you taking the time to explain and show what each setting does, not just rattle off a dozen settings with no context.
Thank you very much!
The real question is why aren't some of these already set as 'sensible defaults'?
Personal preferences on what should be default can vary a lot. Automatic feature refinement was not enabled by default prior to this version - now it is, i find it sensible. Tab bar is new feature, so it is understandable to not be enabled by default. On the other hand, new auto dimensioning and auto horizontal/vertical tools in sketchers are rightfully enabled by default. To sum up - I believe that current defaults are sensible enough. Some minor tweaks and you are off to the races
I hope the final version of 1.0 will have an installer.
Yes, it will
The thing I think most noticeably reduces friction is replacing the workbench dropdown selector with the tab bar view. This makes jumping between workbenches feel much more like switching between ribbon buttons in other apps. You don't have to pop up the selector, scroll through the list etc. It has done a lot for my former frustration at e.g. switching to Draft for tools that IMO belong in Part. I would absolutely recommend trying out the other two built-in themes and installing and testing OpenTheme, too; if you find some of the tools like Sketcher a bit frustrating, it really might be easier in other colour schemes.
I like to keep all the workbenches enabled, but reorder them so sketcher is at the top, then part design and part. This way pressing W, 1 takes me to the sketcher, W, 2 to part design and W, 3 to part wb.
Yeah, FreeCAD is very customizable, make it your own
Did I miss any quality of life settings? Let me know
I like to disable "exit sketch with esc" so that i can press esc to unselect tools.. for some reason I haven't gotten used to doing it by right-clicking.
@@jpa3141 Good point!
I need to do this!! I back out of sketches accidentally so often.
I will try it as well
8:30 BIG THX because i use the lines and I like to refine my self, you earned your like
This is one of the most practical FreeCAD tutorials I’ve ever seen, for an operation that I think a lot of new users want and get tripped up by. You’ve got a great method of explaining and demonstrating common pitfalls, as well as showing useful examples and alternative strategies.
Thank you very much!
At the beginning with STL and 3mf you operate a conversion from shape to object. I could see a definition of shapes in FreeCAD, but not of objects, what are they ?
Not sure what object you are referring to. When converting STL it goes through folowing classes - Mesh > Shape > Shape (refined) > Solid. Can you point a timecode maybe?
Sorry, I was confused, I did not mean obecjt, but solid @@RoadSideMaker
And there are a few explanations in FreeCAD wiki about the principles of solids construction actually. It is surely hard to find fine answers, looking for irrelevant questions😅
You are welcome, glad I could help
Waw, that tutorial Is really nice and useful! Thank you !
You are welcome!
awesome.. thanks
You're welcome!
excellent tutorial. What addon do You use to show workbench as tabs?
Thank you! In the new FreeCAD 1.0 RC2 it is build in. Just go to Edit>Preferences>Workbenches and in the bottom there is an option called Workbench selector type and select "TabBar"
I just learned more about FreeCAD in 13 minutes than in the last 3 months of trying to use it. Thank you.
Thank you!
Talking about not only what are you doing, but also why, is what makes the difference here. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching!
thank you. perfect video. life saver features of freecad hidden in plain sight. I hate the UI and it was not so stable when I tried it. Now I will install freecad alongside solidworks which lacks features to work with stl. liked and subscribed. thanks again
Thank you!
Great tutorial, One thing I am having an issue with, I have a Star Wars scout trooper helmet I currently am working on and the face part of the helmet around the eyes area is suppose to got into the visor part at the top of the face portion, but whoever modeled it modeled that part seperated from the visor, the part does not connect to the visor, and its a curved feature, how do I edit curved from a STL file, with no other file format to work from. So that I can merge that part of the face into the visor part of the helmet. Is there a way to make the curves like what is in the step file with no individual faces around the curve.
Thank you. You have two options - if using CAD, then use the ST as a reference and trace sketches around it rebuilding the part. Second option is to take mesh modification software like Meshmixer (it is free) or Blender. The helmet was created, most likely, not in CAD as it contains many organic forms.
@@RoadSideMaker Ya I was afraid of that, I did take it into blender, I'm just not patient enough or skilled enough to go thru all of the thousands of individual faces and points and edges it would take to repair just that section.
I am sure that there should be tools to move bigger parts of the model, not just individual points and faces. Like brush or something
@@RoadSideMaker I tried but the only pushes the two different faces into each other and wont merge them. I guess I'm just gonna have to go thru and merge the points and faces individually to get to what I want. I'm really a noob when it comes to this kind of stuff.
Sorry couldn't be more of help. You can try Meshmixer, it is free. Maybe you find luck there
Great tutorial, thanks. I've been giving it a lot of tries and ended up with Blender for quick mesh modifications. Parametric CADs are not really good for working with meshes. So I use both Blender and FreeCAD now.
Agreed, problem is historically most 3D models made in parametric CAD and shared are in mesh format. That makes it harder to modify than it has to. Hope STEP gets more adoption and becomes standard.
@RoadSideMaker ideally it should be combination of 3mf and step in single format, hope at some point we will get file format like that. technically 3mf is an archive, so we just replace mesh with step and done
It would be helpful, however 3mf is mesh by design. Improved precision mesh, but still a mesh. I don't believe you can just replace step, unfortunately
Wow, this was very helpful!
Thank you!
Thank you, that is really useful information. I just started with 3D printing and FreeCAD.
Glad it was helpful!
Can you please enable the mouse pointer tail? And enable the click indicator thing? Than its a lot easier to follow you mouse clicks. Thank you
Great suggestion, I will look into it
Thanks a great video, very useful. One question though how do you centre the stl file if it comes in offset from the origin?
Thank you. You should determine where you want to place the origin. Than use measure tool to determine necessary offset. Then use Transform tool to set the necessary location
Excellent tutorial! I've always been frustrated by freely available models not being in FreeCAD format - but now I won't have to worry. Thanks for all the info. Liked and subscribed 👍👍
Thank you!
Since I have seen that STP files are supported directly by the slicer, I only use STP for export. However, when I upload my files somewhere, I always upload the FreeCAD file as well. I wish more users would share their FCStd files as well, besides the step files. Btw, nice Tutorial.
Thank you!
Excellent tutorial. FreeCAD is often not very intuitive, but it does have some pretty powerful tools.
Thank you and you are welcome!
Thanks for this timely video. I have just run across a case where the STL file I found need tweaking. As an aside... your first model of a Multigrade filter drawer takes me way back to my days as a B/W darkroom instructor in the days before, and after the introduction of affordable digital camera.
You are welcome, image appearing under red light is always like a magic to me :)
that's great. could you pls share the stl file shown in your tutorial?
Hey, it is not the greatest design. As mentioned, I would redesign it first and then I will publish it. Take a look on Printables, there are several holders available.
@@RoadSideMaker what's the keyword in printable, i just want a similar model to do the practice.
Try "Ilford Multigrade"
@@RoadSideMaker what about the keyword of model shown in 6' of the video
@@cnz-u5x It is a focusing screen spring for 4x5 camera. You can find similar design here (back side, brown color) www.printables.com/model/250649-4x5-large-format-camera
Thank you so much! I had no idea about the defeture button. That is very helpful. It would be great to see how you convert the STEP to a standard Part Design part. Great video!
Thank you! STEP is already parametric part file. 10:50 I am adding the defeatured model into Part Design Body and modifying it afterwards
Very nice and concise video, thank you! I used to go into the mesh workbench and it seemed like a lot of screwing around compared to this.
Thank you and you are welcome!
Let me know if you would like to see me redesign the filter holder featured in video for 3D printing
Yes please
Would love to see that video! And thanks for this one, most helpfull.
Well explained. Thanks for the video.
Thank you! Much appreciated
Very nice style on your video, excellent English and presentation skills. You have explained complex Freecad information I took ages to understand in a few minutes in an easy to understand style. Well done!
Thank you for the kind words!
Nice tutorial! How do you decide when to use Alibre or FreeCAD for a certain project?
Hye, thank you! I default to Alibre for stability and top down assemblies. I use FreeCAD when I need Fasteners (great workbench), multi body booleans in Part wb (not used to Alibre Booleans yet) and FEM.
We are nearing to the end of Clearance modeling discussion. Let me know in the comments what would you like to see next!
Thanks for that workflow. Wondering, why you cannot just copy the box for the lid and change the lip.
Hey, you can, can't see why not. I am trying to focus on the workflow, so the models are arbitrary. Meaning it is not a tutorial for a box 🙂
Onshape!
Nice
