I have been curious how shipping containers can be repurposed to serve a vast variety of uses.
Are shipping container buildings really eco-friendly or “green” sustainable? How are shipping container buildings constructed? What type of buildings can be constructed out of shipping containers?
“Live in a Container” explores these questions and a lot more.

Appropriately how much do each of these methods cost for a 40 foot shipping container?
The cost of various foundations depend upon a lot of variables such as the skill level available to install certain types, supply and demand of materials and work force, location of the build, etc. The first step is to determine your options by consulting a structural engineer. Then, price those options after you find out what will work best for your project.

Me and a friend both lost our homes during Hurricane Helene and are planning on on building small container homes Im glad I found you on here very informative information for a DIY crowd my biggest concern is deciding on the type of foundation we will need to build.
I hope you are both safe. The selection of the best foundation is often selected based upon the type of soil it is setting upon and cost. Here is a video that describes the 3 basic types of foundations to consider th-cam.com/video/PiRGTPM-Y2w/w-d-xo.html It is best to consult a professional in your area that is knowledgeable of what type of foundation that would be best for your needs.
I just found this video, but I never see anyone mentioning that shipping containers can be found with insulation already. Stainless steel interior, exterior, and 2.5 inch foam in floor, walls, ceiling. Reefer containers. Raised aluminum floor makes ideal channels to run electrical conduit, and pex water lines through the floor, could do sub floor heating if you want, or keep it simple and just lay some plywood subfloor over the raised aluminum T channel floor, and then put your finish floor on top. 92 inches wide interior in a high cube reefer.

How are you attaching the beveled wood to the outside of the container? Screw straight through or glue?
You can screw it if you are able to use self healing washers. But, it would be best if you were to find a strong enough glue so you are penetrating the shipping container wall, keeping it as water tight as possible.

The purpose of insulating the shipping container in the examples in the video are so they can be used for human habitation. Yeah, if you want a shed to store stuff, maybe a shipping container is not the best and cheapest choice to make.

Right. But, welding appears to the building inspectors as more permanent than twist locks.
Thinking of placing a container on a heated slab. How effective do you think the heat transfer would be to heat the interior? Thanks for the videos.
It would probably work. Be sure to insulate below the heated slab.
Great video. What do you do if you have water at about 17 inches and want to use a sonotube? Any thoughts? Gravel under the pier? Thank You.
That is a question that should be asked to a structural engineer. I would guess that sonotubes would not be a good solution and a floating raft slab or a deep pier that relies on the friction of the sides and not the bearing to be a better choice. But, like I mentioned before, check with a structural engineer about that.
One option for shop/industrial style structures is welding steel beams beneath the corner fittings perpendicular to the container. That makes the assembly easy to jack which is why I did mine. I used big rig trailer landing gear as jacks by chaining to the corner fittings but had I to do it over I'd buy four new landing gear jacks and weld on permanent mounts. Besides permitting low effort levelling and raising if you throw cribbing you could raise a corner at a time to any finished height you desire, handy if building in a flood plain where raising the structure in emergency could come in handy.

I have a shop that is high in the front and slopes to the back with a very high roller door that I only ever open half way I was thinking of building a loft down one side but putting a container across the door so if I resell and find nobody wants that part I can remove it easily, I was thinking H beams on each corner but I’m not sure if it needs cross braces or if it will be ok locked in to the brick wall one side and the connecting loft on the other.
Do not disturb the land field digging holes for poles or foundation. Instead set the concrete blocks on top of soil with a steel frame on top and then sit the containers on metal frame.Then you don't spend time and money to fool around architects, ingeniers or permits for a living space that is not on digging foundation base.

How would I insulate the floor once it’s set I really don’t want to raise the floor as I hope to park a classic car in the container. BTW I live in Rhode Island. I am in zone 2 USA. in the summer it is hot and humid. Last week the "feels like" temperature was 153. Pressure treated wood on vertical 4x4 posts not in ground contact start to turn black in under 3 years. Regular wood if left outdoors in the rain turns black in 3 weeks. I am running a portable air conditioner on the inside to dry the air. not a mini split because those get stolen in this neighborhood. I am getting Polyiso panels 2.5 inches thick on the walls and 3.5 on the ceiling from InsulationDepot for around a dollar a square foot. I will then mount them to the inside walls using canned spray foam, and seal the gaps with spray foam, either in a can or a froth pack. Spray foam would cost more than the shipping container. This way I get R20 on the walls, and R28 on the ceiling. That would be about $8 a square foot with spray foam, instead of the $1 per square foot I am getting with Polyiso.
I am in zone 5. So, your home experience is a lot different than mine and my clients in this area. Thank you so much for sharing how it is in your part of the country. I really appreciate it.

We built 24"x24"x8" wood boxes attached 12" sonotubes to 1" above grade level dropped in the ground on 3" of compacted crushed limestone( 5/8"-3/4")to just below frost line (42" for us), made rebar cages to go inside, filled with concrete and wet set a 12"x12" 1/4" steel plate that had rebar welded to the bottom that the container sets on. Used 4 per 20' container. 2 northern winters zero movement so far. All was backyard engineered for us by us. Don't know if it'll work for you...... Hindsight being as clear as it is I would wet set long large bolts in the tubes to mount plates on instead of welding rebar to plate. Using this method would make tweaking level MUCH easier than my first go round.
That is exactly the type of comments I have been hoping for from the live in a container community. Yours is full of practical information from your own trials an errors. I appreciate it so much! As for tweaking level of the containers at the base plates, pouring the concrete with the top threaded anchor bolts already in the forms is a common method. Then, the leveling comes into play when the base plate, that is welded to the bottom of the container, is placed on top of the cured footing and with the threaded anchor bolts allowed to go through the base plate. The base plate is over wet 1-1/2" non-shrink grout which is where the leveling is done.
If I do another container project that is precisely how I'll level it/them. I used different thickness metal shims on the first go. Worked, but created unnecessary hurdles. Now if we could get building codes/zoning to be friendly towards utilizing containers.
Is the corrugation consistent from one to another? Asking because if one was to make a form for cement pour could one pattern be made to be used with different containers or are some corrugations different than others?
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has standardized the dimensions of most shipping containers. While I cannot claim to know that all containers share the same corrugation dimensions, it is very likely that most will share the same dimensional properties. To be safe, you might should pour the concrete based upon each shipping container profile you work with though. I am not fully understanding why you want to make a form for cement pour. What would the end result be used for?

fifteen years ago I got engineering on containers we used for studios. I brought them to my ranch. Now the code enforcement wants "As built" and "engineering" on these containers. I use the containers as "equipment" . Sometimes wind breaks, sometimes storage. Sometimes as a privacy buffer/ fence. Is there any grandfather clauses or solutions or do I get rid of 15 containers that have holes in them? I have looked at 1604.5
Most municipalities have not adopted the most recently written codes yet. If you were able to use your containers on your property already without any code related issues, then you probably still have the grandfather clause in affect. All municipals are a little different as to what they require though. So, if in question, it is best to check with them.

What if you live in the tropics where it doesn't freeze regarding frost line
Check with your local building permit authorities for the depth required for your foundations in your area. The load bearing capacity of your site will also determine the depth of your foundation.

I have messed up big time. I am in the south and put reflectix on the inside of shipping containers with no air gap. Now of course I have heat. It is great as a vapor barrier but now I don’t know how to correct this. Will you help me, please? I found this video that is similar to the install you did to the interior metal walls of the container. www.reflectixinc.com/tutorials-and-videos/garage-doors/ . The heat inside the container will be reflected back within the space. Maybe consider cutting some edges to provide an air space between the sheets of reflectix per the video. I don't anticipate that this will help much with reducing the heat that is contained in the space though. But, it might help reduce the possibility of condensation from building up behind the reflectix - given that there is some air movement. Check out the videos on this channel about insulation and rain screens for more ideas to consider. Good luck and let me know what you find out that works for you.
Price plays alot with me, although I tend to lean towards wood. Also wood does have a slight R-value of 1.5 +/~ per " depending on species

Spray on insulation is sprayed on the outside of your shipping container with panels to hold it in place and give the container a modern look
Spray on insulation will attach to whatever it is sprayed upon. It does not need anything to hold it in place. The gypsum board (is that what you mean by "panels?") is placed over the spray on insulation to protect the insulation from being damaged and protect the occupants from the flammable properties of the insulation.

Hi, great info thanks. I watched your best insulation for shipping container homes video where you talked about closed cell spray foam on the outside. I'm wondering if you use HIGH DENSITY closed cell foam, which is waterproof, would you need the added expense of siding? I'm planning a container home & trying to keep costs as low as possible. The insulation should be covered against excessive UV exposure. Check with the product manufacturer's recommendations. But, generally, spray foam will deteriorate if left exposed too long to the sunlight (prolonged UV exposure). Carlisle is one of many companies that provide insulation products.
