V. The Son of God Prepares His Disciples 8. Jesus Prepares for Departure (John 16:25-33)
As we open our Bibles to the 16th chapter of John, we are looking at the closing remarks of Jesus Christ before His arrest and crucifixion. These are the last words Jesus will share with the 11 before He is placed on the cross. This conversation, that really began back in chapter 13, is a conversation that John describes as being heart breaking for the disciples to hear. All night long, Jesus has tried to prepare the 11 for His departure. The Lord has attempted to make promises to help lift the burdens on their heart. He has leveled with them about tragedies they can expect, especially regarding the persecution they shall receive for being associated to Christ. Jesus has not wasted one second on this long walk to the Garden of Gethsemane. He is covering all the basis this group of guys will need in order to endure the days to follow. In fact, they real fight for these guys is just hours from this moment.
As we explore these final words Jesus plans to share with these guys this side of the cross, I want us to pay close attention to a few things. First of all, Jesus’ departure to the Father allows for plain speech regarding the mysteries of the Father. Secondly, Jesus’ departure to the Father opens the Fathers ears to the believer. Thirdly, Jesus’ departure to the Father reconciles the believer, even when their faith grows weak. And lastly, Jesus’ departure to the Father proves He has overcome the world.
