The Christmas Tree Farm vs. Lovelight Farms
Reading two holiday romance books this year about women struggling to run Christmas tree farms made me feel like I was stuck in a Groundhog Day-themed Hallmark Christmas movie. The Christmas Tree Farm by Laurie Gilmore and Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison have strikingly similar plots and are both spicy HEAs, but they feature different tropes.
In this video, I outline my thoughts on how they compare and what I liked about each one-without giving away any spoilers. Have you read these? Which one do you prefer?
P.S. I just checked chatgpt and it looks like there are even more books about falling in love while fixing up Christmas tree farms lol. There's Something About Merry by Codi Hall, Christmas at Spruce Hill Farm by Kathryn Springer, The Christmas Tree Farm by Melody Carlson... but I am tapped out!

I've been weeding through Libby and Goodreads trying to find the best Christmassy books to get into the holiday spirit! I've noticed I either vibe with a holiday book straight away or not at all, so in this video I'll share my thoughts on a handful of holiday romance books and whether...

I love that we have he same taste!
GOOD taste 😎
Your dog is adorable! Just sitting there napping while you film! 😂😍 Do you a have Goodreads I can follow too? I saw your blog. Very cool!
if my lap is available, tishka is there to sit on it! p.s. saw your request! now we’re friends 😉
OMG! That's horrible! ROFL I have a good one for you! I just finished a fun cozy holiday mystery that was actually good!
save me!! lol.. is it the most wonderful crime of the year!!??!!
NO GOD NOOOOO
😂 I guess you won’t be reading this book then!!! unless you also like laughing at silly lines haha
ROFL! I just finished a good one that thankfully was nothing like this!
@@SpilltheReads Yeah 🤣🤣 It's not for me. But it's good to know
@@BookReviewsWithBecky Phew!!! What book was it?
Also I love how Denmark is mentioned aka my country hahhaha
I felt Lovelight Farms felt boring from the sample I read. I wanted to read one in that series, I think it's the 2nd one Is The Weeds
life is too short to read something you find boring! I don’t really know why I continued when I didn’t love it. probably just because I wanted to see how similar it was to the Xmas tree farm haha
@SpilltheReads Sometimes we "hate read" or hope it gets better. But yeah I try to make it a point to DNF, when I'm no longer enjoying
I have wanted to read them both but my library doesn't have any B. K. Borison books and I don't want to own it hahha
I’m so thankful to have amazing Libby library cards with a good selection.. do you have Libby or an equivalent in Denmark that lets you borrow ebooks?
@SpilltheReads We do have Libby. But I suspect that not all is available in Denmark. But there is also apps and library websites that's just danish. I also often find translated works instead
Have you read either of these books? The Christmas Tree Farm: A Novel: amzn.to/3DsuEhU Lovelight Farms: A Novel: amzn.to/403hmkP
Do you have any unique Xmas recs? Also yes, my dog has only two speeds: 0 or 100 😂
Its hard to stick out in the Christmas Romans space also that dog is so chill
This is a book you either loved it or hated it.... and I hated it! 😂😂😂
oh no!! I wonder if I can guess why you didn’t like it.. was it the unexplained aspect? or being so flipping unnerving? I still get chills when I think about what happened to Eve
Midnight Feast made my top 10 list, out of 249 this year! As did Darling Girls!
hi! omg thanks for your comment :) my jaw is on the floor hearing how many books you read this year! do you do audiobooks too? I’m going to have to watch your video and see what else you liked!
Also I apologize for spamming on your channel haha, I have now subscribed! I'm happy I randomly came across a video of yours today!
no it's giving me such a rush to see so many nice comments! One of the reasons I made a booktube was to connect with other likeminded readers since reading is an isolating activity haha :) thanks for your sub!
@SpilltheReads Yay! I'm happy you don't find it creepy 🤣🫶
@@SpilltheReads Me too! I love connecting with other bookworms! 🥰
I loved Hello Beautiful, when I read it. I even got it in hardcover because I loved the cover art so much. I don't know if I still love it as much, I might reread it. Sometimes my love for a book fades over time, but it's still a special book to me. I do understand some of the critique I've seen though
I wonder if it would hit me hard emotionally the second time like it did the first
@@SpilltheReads Yeah it really hit the first time and I couldn't read literally anything else. But in retrospect I'm not as obsessed with it
The God Of The Woods sounds intriguing for sure!
I might need to check out Darling Girls!
are you a big thriller person? I just finished filming quick thoughts on all the good thrillers/mystery books I read this year (around 50) and I'm going to share my favs. will probably post it next week :)
@SpilltheReads I'm not big on thrillers. But I'm dipping my toes. I've just had a big interest in them lately
So good!
@@BookReviewsWithBecky That's great 👌
coming back to this comment now that you mentioned you’re from Denmark to see if you know an author called Jenny lund madsen? I read an amazing crime mystery thriller by her called Thirty Days of Darkness and now I want to read more of her books
The Rachel incident is on my radar but I'm not sure if it's for me
for me it's PERFECT but you could always read a preview before committing to buying. Are you on Libby? I read all my books there!
@SpilltheReads I do usually try previews if I have doubts. I gotta see if my library has it, there's previews aswell. I do have Libby, but I think there's not alot available for me, because my country just never have it 🤣
oh sorry I saw this comment after I already asked you again about Libby somewhere else! TH-cam makes it so hard to find “new replies to comments” haha
@@SpilltheReads That's alright haha 👌
It disappointed me so much! I paid full price for this 😭
at least you have the beautiful cover to look at lol! gotta hand it to the cover artist of this series
@SpilltheReads Yes the covers are gorgeous! 😍
I like the Hallmark vibes though!
Those passages really reminded me how much I loved this book omg
❤️ the chemistry was there for sure
@SpilltheReads So true!👌
I loved Hazel and Noah!!!
I didn't mind the spice, but it wasn't my favorite
which of the 3 do you think does it best?
@SpilltheReads I didn't care for the first books spice, as I wasn't invested in them as a couple, like you said in a video. I felt like the 2nd one was too spicy for my liking, but I also felt like Hazel needed it, so it made sense. I really liked the spice in the 3rd book, because I felt the attraction. But in retrospect maybe it was, because it gave hallmark vibes, and you get those spicy scenes, you never get in the movies. But overall I'm not a big spicy scene fan, I usually speed read them, so I can move on faster 🤣
The Pumpkin Spice Cafe was not it , but I'm happy it exists because I got The Cinnamon Bun Book Store
I have a Goodreads but I barely use it
I wanted to write reviews for books I read this year but the problem is… I forget everything as soon as I finish a book! can’t remember character names or small details at all. only the gist and if I liked it
@SpilltheReads I think writing reviews isn't for everyone. I am on Threads (on the bookish side), and I do write a few lines of what I think of a book. And I will try to give my opinion and a rating if someone specifically asks me, but I'm just not cut out for reviews. It feels like school work to me 🤣 Also forgetting everything is very relatable 🤣 I have the worst memory. Its why I sometimes start writing some thoughts down, while I'm still reading. Like I'll pull up my notes app and write
I couldn't finish the physical book, but I switched to audiobook and it felt very much like a movie in my head 🤣
I also find it way easier and more enjoyable to listen to holiday romance books. you're probably onto something with us thinking of them as hallmark movies
@SpilltheReads Yes 👌 I loved listening to it
I really loved the second book, but this one I think I loved for the christmassy vibes. It also helped I visited a christmas farm myself while I was reading this
it made me want to rewatch this old hallmark movie called Fir Crazy 🤪
@SpilltheReads Hahah, yes it just gets you in that christmas spirit!
Somehow The Christmas Bookshop confused me
anything in particular confusing? I guess I can picture maybe all the different themes in once book throwing the reader around a bit, like family drama, personal growth, the love triangle and being kind of long.. but I was really into the writing style and characters
@SpilltheReads I liked the writing, but I think the romance lost me a bit 🤔
I enjoyed The Christmas Tree Farm, it's the best in the series so far. I know it's no great book, but I had fun. Although I regret buying the physical copies
I'm literally listening to the last hour of lovelight farms and I want to compare them because I think they're so similar! have you read that one?
@@SpilltheReads I want to read it. My library doesn't have it, but I really wish it did. I definitely want to listen to the audiobook, but I can't find it anywhere 🤔
mam, i got a stationary bike for this sole purpose a couple of days ago!!! (and also crocheting while cycling)
oh wow I crochet too but I’m a beginner so I don’t think I’d be able to do it as well on the bike! is yours one of those with a table attachment?
@SpilltheReads no unfortunately it doesn't have any work space, but im going to attach something to make it work
What unique holiday books would you recommend?
I loved the ending. Or lack of it
It still makes me crazy thinking about it like 10 months later! But mentally I've kind of decided what I think I know what happened more or less.
I loved this book also!! Not a rom- com gal, normally, but I enjoyed this so much and glad I stepped out my box❤
I'm so glad you liked it too! I'm always on a mission to find the Christmas books that are actually good! What else are you reading right now?
@SpilltheReads I just started another Christams themed book, it is a funny/horror book called You Better Watch Out, by Matt Forgit. This is my first year reading with the season. I had stepped away from reading for a few years (i had a real attention needer that made reading impossible) and got back into it in September. Has been the best mental health decision I have ever made, btw. 😀
no way, that just became available on my Libby! Please let me know how it is because I'm trying to decide what final Xmas book spend time on :) I've been listening to LoveLight Farms today but it's hard to focus on a plain love ole story hehe
also congrats on getting back into reading! I started this channel earlier this year so I'm also getting back into it after not being a huge reader in previous years. All it took for me was getting kicked off Netflix and discovering Libby!
@SpilltheReads I recommend it so far, of course it is completely different than TMWTOTY. I have not made much progress because I have been busy, but the chapters are short, making it easy to slip a chpt here and there.
Hi, just found your channel and subbed because lit fic featuring unhinged female characters is my fave! ❤
omg hi!! this made me smile :) thanks so much! What are you reading right now?
Christmas books - lovelight farms atm lol, but then Big Swiss!

I read Big Swiss. It was so different than what I was expecting. I thought it was really good. I tried to lend it to my daughter who is a clinical psychologist, she said no. It sounded too close to home (the therapy part) 😂😂
hi!! thanks for your comment :) Have you read any other Jen Beagin books? I tried Pretend I'm Dead but it was too depressing for me to finish
@@SpilltheReads I have not read any of her other books. Oof! Depressing is a mood I try to avoid in books. 🙃
I want to read Mrs claiban sounds like a A24 movie

hi! I hope you get to read it too :) Have you checked if your local library has it?
@SpilltheReads Actually I live in a small village in India, here in the local library most of the books are available in Bengali and Hindi languages. This type of books aren't available here😞
@@mithu_naskar oh I'm sorry! I hope you will find a way to read it some time :) Thanks for your nice comments :)
Is this book going on your TBR? Drop your holiday book recs in the comments :) The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year: A Novel: amzn.to/3Ou8tKz
I don't normally like romance either, so I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this! It was more cozy mystery!

Wait is the pumpkin spice cafe good?
it depends how much you like cheesy romance stories.. it was too much for me to take seriously. I have a full review of it if you want to hear more! ♥️
Didn’t really think pumpkin spice was all that great. Cinnamon bun was better and Christmas tree was okay also.
i feel the same. why do you think this series is getting so much attention when it’s just okay? cute cover art?
When Grace says she throws a dart at a map of the US to plan her vacations... Maybe thays how the author planned the plot
omg 😆 have you read any of her other books?
@SpilltheReads no, I have her newest on Libby, but saw the blurb about this one on that book so I thought I'd read this first 🤢 bad idea, now I think I'll just return the new one. I see why there was no wait for this one now usually when this is the case and I stumble across a sequel/the authors second book unknowingly and find the first, there's a super long wait
