Healthy garden soil is the foundation of thriving plants. To achieve this, we can enhance the soil’s structure and nutrient availability with an incredible natural addition. This step helps neutralize excess acidity, promotes better water retention, and encourages the availability of essential nutrients. It improves soil texture, creating the perfect environment for roots to grow deeper and stronger. These benefits will work wonders for your garden, transforming it into a haven for healthy plants.
The magical substance behind this transformation is called limestone. Limestone is a natural rock that contains calcium carbonate, an essential compound that balances the pH of acidic soils. By adjusting soil acidity, limestone ensures plants can absorb nutrients effectively, promoting robust growth and increasing productivity. Limestone also improves the soil’s ability to hold water and air, ensuring roots receive the right balance of moisture and oxygen.
To make the best use of limestone for your garden soil, we’ll start by crushing it into a fine powder. This fine texture makes it easier to spread evenly and allows it to blend effectively with the soil. The process is simple but transformative, so let’s dive into how to use it step by step.
Start by preparing your garden bed at the end of the growing season. This is an ideal time because the soil will have months to absorb and benefit from the limestone during the dormant winter period. Begin by removing any weeds and already existing vegetation. The weeds should be discarded entirely as they can harbor pests or diseases. However, the remaining vegetation-such as stems, leaves, and other organic plant parts-will serve a beneficial role, so be sure to keep them.
Once the bed is cleared of weeds, evenly sprinkle a thin layer of the crushed limestone powder over the surface of the soil. Make sure the coverage is uniform, as this will help the soil reap maximum benefits. The limestone will act as a natural soil conditioner, enhancing its fertility and texture. It will also replenish essential calcium, a vital element for plant cell structure and overall growth. This layer sets the foundation for a nutrient-rich and well-balanced garden bed.
The leftover vegetation we set aside earlier now comes into play. Chop the leaves, stems, and other organic material into small pieces. These pieces will be repurposed as a protective and nutrient-rich layer for the soil. Spread this organic matter evenly on top of the limestone layer, creating a protective mulch-like covering that will decompose over time, adding even more nutrients to the soil.
Once the layers are in place, lightly mix the topmost layer of soil to blend the limestone and organic material slightly. This step helps integrate the limestone and vegetation into the soil’s surface, allowing the decomposition and nutrient release to occur more efficiently.
After this, it’s time to let nature take over. Leave the bed undisturbed for at least three to four weeks, allowing the limestone and organic layer to work their magic. During this time, the limestone will continue balancing the soil pH, and the organic matter will break down to enrich the soil with essential nutrients and improve its structure.
By preparing your garden bed at the end of the growing season, you’re setting the stage for success in the upcoming spring. Over the winter, the soil will absorb the benefits of the limestone and organic matter, becoming healthier, more fertile, and better structured. This means when it’s time to plant again, your soil will be primed to support vigorous growth, leading to lush, productive plants.
The effort you invest now will reward you with a flourishing garden that thrives from the ground up.

Science would be to grow a control group that does not get the compost tea etc and comparing the performances of the same type of plants receiving the different treatments.
Compost tea has a very low NPK. Urine has 100X more concentration. Don't waste your time. Just pee on your plants instead.
The funny thing here is that if you let that charcoal and compost mixture sit for a week you have effectively killed all of the beneficial bacteria that was in the compost to begin with by dumping it into an anaerobic environment for a week. I still like this idea but maybe just fill it up and use a drill and paint mixer to blend it up real well and dump it on the bed quickly instead of killing everything off lol.
👍👍👍 ! Thanks .
Great!! Cost effective and safe. Can't wait to try it
Very interesting 👌
Thank you so much
I used brown sugar which also has molasses in it with the yeast. Now im going to watch how my plant responds.
So how are the plants doing now?

My yellow 😂zuchinni plants did not like this mix 😢
Great tip. Will try it out. Thank you.
For good soil you need garden compost. This is called humus. Charcoal is carbon also good for soil.
First time I've heard Magazine's version. There's a sense of irony with this given that each verse is done slightly differently hence it's not boring. I like it but it's the Buzzcocks for me though.
Can i also use formula for Irish potatoes?
Uuuuuuuummmm.... yeah. "Just do this and your garden will magically be fixed." No! Your soil needs far more than that. The soil needs a lot more than this magically elixir. I can visibly see that the soil is starving. Organic matter is desperately needed, not compost. Compost is definitely needed as well along with peat moss. Fertilizer will also likely be needed. This miracle cure won't do it by itself.
Supar sir ❤
Let's see, AI voice, barefooted gardener using "hoe" not used in this part of the world, advice that includes too many steps. Click bait
No secret just a bit of common sense you fckn idiot
First, we will use an AI voice...
I can see someone crushing up Match Light Charcoal and contaminating their soil.
Thanks very much. I saw this also being used in a Japanese garden. Yours is simpler, obviously I dont need the wheat bran that they suggested. I like the charcoal mix idea. I will be using that.
This video is a perfect example of why there are so many garden myths around. It's the same principle used in marketing snake oil.
So, you're saying this is nonsense? Better soil could very well be due to loosening it and adding compost and bone meal. Charcoal, I don't know. So, what is your opinion?
@@caroleanne8529 There are three basic types of soil: sand, silt and clay. Some may be loose, some may be compacted and some may be various degrees between. I'm not sure what "dead soil" means but it could mean soaking wet or bone dry and lacking much nutritional value. To suggest that the simple addition of charcoal is turn sub-standard soil into "Garden Paradise" is at the least, mis-leading.
Sand silt and clay are not soil types. They are the three main materials of which all soils are composed in some proportion, alongside a relatively small proportion of organic matter except for in the case of peaty soils, which are very high in organic matter. Sandy soils, silty soils and clay soils are descriptive of which of those three materials are present in the greatest proportion as compared to the others, but sand silt and clay are not soil in and of themselves. To characterize this video as suggesting “the simple addition of charcoal” will “turn substandard soil into garden paradise” when it demonstrated and described a soil amendment process that is demonstrably and objectively more involved than making “the simple addition of charcoal” is at the least misleading. While the video makes a fairly surface level foray into the topic that is wanting for greater detail, nuance and contextual constraints on the efficacy of charcoal as a soil amendment, it is true that charcoal can drastically improve the performance of degraded soils when used in the manner described in this video. In addition to housing soil biota, it also aids in both drainage and water retention due to its porosity, and improves soil CEC (cation exchange capacity) which corresponds with nutrient availability within the soil, and owing to its high CEC it holds onto nutrients that would otherwise wash deeper into the soil profile and subsequently into the groundwater thus improving nutrient cycling within the soil food web.
@@cantseetheforestforthetree9673 Sheesh! More snake oil.
@@priayief it’s not snake oil, there are myriad published, scientific studies demonstrating the efficacy of biochar (charcoal) as a soil amendment, and a history of use going back thousands of years across multiple continents. Also, dismissing my comment out of hand as ”snake oil” without addressing a single point made therein is a bad faith deflection tactic. If you disagree with my statements then provide a reasoned argument as to why. Don’t just go accusing me of selling snake oil without making any attempt to even support that charge with reasoning or evidence.
Save time, charcoal contains potash, just use potash forget charcoal.
@@KM-pq7jk potash and charcoal do not serve the same function in soil. Potash will not provide the structural, cation exchange, and microbial habitat functions that charcoal serves. Potash is also very mobile in the soil and will wash out of the soil system with repeated irrigation and rainfall, while charcoal is stable for thousands of years helping to hold potash and other nutrients in the soil system.
If this is being used here regularly, those plants don't look healthy, AT ALL!😢
Thank you
Thank you
Can you use fireplace ash?
Yes if you only burned wood.
No. Wood ash is very alkaline not the same thing as charcoal at all.
@@kaittemurry4740 not as a substitute for charcoal, but as a nutrient source for Calcium and Potassium primarily, and for trace minerals. It is not advisable for use on alkaline soils though, and should be applied sparingly due to its alkalinity.
Depends on your soil. If it it more on the acidic definitely. But one thing that it will provide is potassium. Just not in large quantities.
sir are you from pakistan
Hi TM Baagh, can I use charcoal bricket powder instead of biochar, thanks.
I use 13 13 13 with great results and a lot cleaner, easier, quicker, and actually works
