Paddling the wild rapids of Lutinjoki in Finland
In this video we are paddling down the river Lutinjoki, which is located between Patvinsuo national park and Finland's border with Russia. The five rapids of Lutinjoki are Niskakoski, Leveäkoski, Saarikoski, Saivarvirta and Valkeakoski. What makes this place so special, is the untouched wilderness of the area, with nobody else in sight, if it wasn't for the local wildlife!

We have paddled here many times before, yet never have we caught temperatures like this in May, which even made the seals go back into the water - at least halfway. Here is a short video of our second day trip to Tiilikkajärvi national park. The main goal was to make it all the way across the lake to find a famous boundary stone, which dates back to the year 1595. Despite the gloomy weather, we were happy to enjoy one more paddling trip this season, before our canoes would begin their well-deserved hibernation.

@tapioportimo2551 We only go to Patvinsuo national park in May, as soon as the ice melts, because otherwise the water levels are way too low to make it comfortable down the river. Also, summer + swamp = mosquito hell! 😁

Thank you for watching our video! Here in Finland you will find only 3 types of snakes: grass snake, smooth snake (but only in Ahvenanmaa) and adders. The adder snake is the only venomous snake we have in the country. When bitten, you have a 99,99% chance of surviving. The last known fatal incident dates back to the 90ies, as far as I know. A bite requires a visit to the ER, though, because there might be other less severe symptoms and allergic reactions.

Hey Stine, thanks for watching one of our videos! The starting places for paddling in Linnansaari national park have been either Oravi or Rantasalmi (right next to Hotel Järvisydän). Both are approximately of equal distance to the hotspots, if you are trying to see some seals :)

Regarding the, “Pot Holes…,” My first thought was that they are connected to the aqua firs that supply the water system for this lake, and that, maybe with wave action, they get filled in with sediment. But, since I know very little on these subjects, I could be way wrong. Gorgeous lake, though…
That's a very interesting theory! 🤔 The lake was so cold, that it could definitely be about springs feeding water to it.
Could be methane gas, escaping? Definitely from air bubbles, I've seen em 10 ft around and are smelly
10 ft?! That's huge! 😲 We haven't noticed any smell around the holes, yet they might just be inactive.

Last week we received exciting news from our local university's seal identification unit: The seal in this video has finally been identified! Meet "Alpo" (Phs033), a male Saimaa ringed seal, who was born 15. February 2011 and who frequents the waters of Haukivesi and Pihlajavesi 😍
