A self-recording rain gauge, also known as a recording gauge, is a device that automatically measures and records rainfall over time. It can be used to:
Record rainfall
A self-recording rain gauge can record rainfall daily or weekly. It can produce a permanent record of rainfall, including the amount, duration, intensity, and when it started and stopped.
Plot rainfall
A self-recording rain gauge can plot rainfall on a chart over time, which is sometimes called a mass curve.
A self-recording rain gauge works by collecting rain in a funnel-shaped collector at the top of the gauge. The water then flows into a float chamber, which contains a light metal float with a pen attached to its stem. As the float rises with the rainfall, the pen plots a line on a chart wrapped around a clock drum. After every centimeter of rainfall, the float chamber is syphoned and the recording starts again.
