Wow thanks! I am 5' 5" but I used to be 5' 6". Really hoping this is the year I get a little bigger.
Man your busy, Lol,
I know! Well actually I am avoiding real work like recording and practicing.
@@brookhoover1384Lol, tell Me about it, Im trying to get to friedman levels and just know there aint enough time on earth to acheive it, Lol. so screw practice, LMAO.
I should be a lot better than I am. I peaked at age 16. I'm 63.
Thank you ,there is a heap of material contained that I can work my way through. Some things I knew but haven’t really been practicing and there is a lot of tasty little bits to work on.As an old guy I have trouble remembering large amounts of tab.Is it more a matter of playing it over and over and gaining muscle memory or trying to recall it?I can generally play straight from the tab when it is in front of me.Here in Australia I have only seen snow once in my life, seen plenty of desert though. Thanks for your videos I really get something from each one ,and guitar playing is gradually improving.Even spent up big on a s/hand Squier Jazzmaster, now I want to try the jaguar .Like the short scale idea….Thanks again John
Hey there John! I have had my surf band going since 2006. Before each gig, I would have to lock myself away and play along with the record (our own music) for a couple of hours each day preparing for the show. The songs seemed very difficult to remember for me. Even though I wrote them! And recorded multiple versions. I'd write them out too. Now I use a thing called Guitar Pro software and I can write them out and play along with them slow if needed. So we have show Saturday and I've been reviewing seven songs a day for seven days before the gig and it's all coming back and I feel confident. We had not played a show since October so we are rusty. Jaguars are pretty good! I have four of them. My favorite was made in Japan from 1998. I want to move to Australia. The US has gone insane.
Thanks man very helpful
Thanks, Brook. And that's a vibey guitar.
THANKS! I put it together with the help of my friends Ian and Don. It's a MJT body and a Squire Mustang neck with Curtis Novak Pickups and a Mastery Bridge. It's a little heavy. I am thinking of changing the neck.
Dont know bout chuck berry but some freddie king thats the shit, Lol, anyone with the name king in it, Lol, PS just sarcasm, no offense, lol.
I like Freddy! He was a real cool cat. Gone too soon.
Sweet amp. Just took a quick look on Reverb...cheapest one is $3k! Don't leave it unattended!
Oh wow! I do keep an eye on it. I play it out live quite a bit. It would be so cool to have an anvil case for it.
I recently got an older model which had a Mustang body…there was a lawsuit and they switched to the SG body shape. The bodies are MDF and the pickups are Gibson Melody Makers. I put an old Ibenez bridge on mine and have intonated perfectly. The pickups sound great..especially the neck pup. It’s a fun guitar but surprisingly heavy.
I was pretty happy how this guitar turned out. Once it was dialed in the pickups sounded really good!
Probably unintentional, but your phrasing around the 2:30 mark sounded like start of the chorus to Deep Purple's "Nobody's Home". I need to come back to this one. Several interesting bits in here and to be frank, scales and barre chords are 2 of my weaknesses.
If you need a PDF I can make one for you. Email me at hooverguitar@yahoo.com

Cheers from a friend north of the border. I dig it too !
Hey alright Ben! Stay cool! Hw is the weather up there?
@ forget about it. It’s good and cold but you ya know , I’d rather this then slushy salty wet Streets. How was t(e bid this past weekend ?
The gig was ok! I had a decent time. Was really tired the next day. I think it was having to get our stuff in the building really fast that did me in. It was cold so we had to have the door open the least amount of time. It was a big garage door so it really sucked out all the hot air. A decent little crowd showed up and we got some tips and I played a new song for the act. It was Bertha Lou! Nobody got it.
@ lol. You’re too funny Brook. Well at least the people showed up. They can’t all be packed houses at the Bitter End.
That's right! Big crowds are overwhelming but small crowds can also get me feeling weird. The whole idea of getting on a stage and doing something that calls attention to oneself is just plain weird but I gotta do it ha ha!
at 43 Im learning guitar from my son. I have an old dean that is just worn out and in need of more repairs than the guitar is worth. so my local guitar store sold me this exact guitar. makes me feel good to see the comments full of fellow guitar players talking about how good this guitar is. I'm sure this guitar will be enjoyed for years to come.
These guitars surprise me! What are you working on? Thanks for stopping by
@@brookhoover1384 its an old dean that my son found in a trash can. not sure on the model but its a 2007 and is just a wood grain with a clearcoat.
Very cool! I've been after one myself. Hoping one pops up locally. I almost got one last summer but the risks and costs of shipping from Europe kind of deterred me.
Where are you located? I felt really fortunate this one showed up in my area. I'm in Cedar Rapids and this one was in Des Moines. Price was pretty attractive. Was going to do a trade and the two amps I brought failed on the spot so no deal and I had to collect cash to get it done. No regerts! I see them pop up from time to time but not in Iowa.
The nut slots are probably too high ..
Right on! I filed them down and fo course went too far. It's better though. Going to fill in a slot with a product called Nut Rescue from musiccitybridge.com
@brookhoover1384 i couldn't tell you how many guitars i have messed up, lol 🙄 One thing that i don't think ill do again is try to level a neck and recrown all the frets I guess some of us are better at other things, lol its why they pay the vig boys big dollars for that kinda work! But i do it all, a little here a little there. I build amps, effects, guitars, etc. But back to the nut, i think if its not too bad to begin with maybe take a little material off the BOTTOM of the nut, or probably better get a set of decent nut files and feeler gauges. Its probably why a lot of guitars wont stay in tune as well, lol i know that its very uninspiring to play a guitar that wont stay in tune, and the nut is one of many very crucial aspects of the guitar that just has to be right.
Tell us briefly about the gear you are using in these types of videos.
I mainly use older guitars into Fender tube amps.. I have a 90's RI Fender Reverd Unit in the chain. Been using a '66 Vibro Champ. Now have a '61 Princeton set up. Also have been using a 1964 Vox AC30 Treble amp. If I need some grit I add a Rat or a Mosky Silver Horse. Thanks for asking.
@ thanks, Brook. I had a feeling they were Fenders. Great tone.
I always dig new things to work on, so thanks! I thought that first chord shape was a Dm though.
Cool man! I didn't know most of those shapes.
Yo, Brookmeister….what amp were you playing through?
Probably the '64 AC30. I will try to check though.
Yes it's the '64 AC30
@ thanks, Brook. Love your channel.
Oh wow! Thank yoU! There are so many great channels out there. I try to get down to business pretty quick and keep it short. If I learned to edit I'd probably get one video out a year. Doing it down and dirty allows me to crank 'em out down and dirty style.
I think that was interesting 🤔
Well cool! The Major 7th is so mellow it's freaky! Thanks for checking it out.
That amp sounds great, the Jr. looks and sounds great and the RAT pedal sounds great!
Thanks man! I grew up playing SG Juniors int he 70's and 80's. Rarely let me down. Pure rock n roll. And yes, The Rat is the distortion pedal that nails it for me. And the amp! WOW! I am a lucky guy! Thanks
Thanks for the video. Cool concept to introduce different chords and tips
What is your opinion on the piano?
I need lessons!
MY FAVORITE CHORD OF ALL TIMW BROTHER WATCHING THIS AT 03:11 IN THW MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IM DRUNK I LOVW IT BROTHERRRR SHREDDDDITTT
I love this chord of the day series you're doing for us
ThaNKS! I suppose some people could call it redundant, but I'd rather make sure everybody has the basic chords down. Thanks for letting me know!
I love my Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe. Though having a few different delays, the heart of it is being an exact replica of an Echoplex EP-3 minus the tape. I leave mine on EP-3 mode with the shortest delay. Almost gives it a double tracking effect.
I had one of those. Should go back and grab another. I'm going to search for one now. Thanks for reminding me. Those are supposed to be the jam!
Amaj7 may not be very rock 'n roll but one of the first songs that I composed on guitar, "Into The Mist", starts out with one. To me, it's got a very laid back 70s feel. Something to chill to. As simplistic as it is, it's still one of my favorites. Someday, I really need to re-record it.
It does have that chill out quality that is for sure. It totally reminds me of AM radio in the 70's. It's a great chord formula but must be deployed with care. Totally triggers a certain mood don't you think?
@brookhoover1384 I know "Into The Mist" gives me a sombre, nostalgic vibe. It started out with me going back and forth from an Amaj7 to an Am7. Took me forever to figure out what to do next before going with a Dmaj7. Mind you, at the time I had no idea what the name of the chords were. So, Amaj7 -> Am7 -> Dmaj7 -> ho to Dsus4 -> po to Dmaj7 -> G6 on the d, g, b, high e strings-> Dmaj7. Rinse and repeat.
Oh wow, I can hear it! Do you have any way to record it?
@@brookhoover1384I've had it recorded for a while, but it is rough thus someday I need to redo it. It's on my channel.
I like the simplicity and the groove. Is it a straight and shuffled groove combined?
I put a shuffle feel on my guitar pro software and it sounded ok. I would say it's pretty swinging. What do you think?
😊 nice 👍
The song and things I want to learn. Your coolness comes through every video!
Oh my gosh! I am so happy you like these riffs and so forth! I'll see what else I can drag out of my attic! Thanks a million! You make my day!
You are just a 🤓 slick Cat....I should know they call me El Gato lol 😂😆 seriously thank you
WOW! Thanks! Are you looking for a tube amp?
Hey Brook, so you have an ideal string height/action that you like to have at the 12th fret? Just curious.
Yes, let me check that
On an electric I am going for .078 of an inch on the 6th string and .063 inches for the first string. Or 1.98 mm/1.60mm
@ Excellent, thanks for the info, Brook!
Even as a starter guitar, that tuning issue would turn me off. It'd more than likely collect more dust than playing. First electric I bought circa 2002 was an Epiphone SG Special. $150ish new at Sam Goody in Westdale. While not perfect, it didn't have that bad of tuning.
Maybe a thicker set of strings and lower string height at the nut will help, but the smaller scale is what messes these little guitars up. Westdale iin Cedar Rapids?
@brookhoover1384 Yup. Cedar Rapids. As I recall what used to be Musicland on the lower level became a Sam Goody. Early 2000s, they were selling cheap guitars, Danelectro pedals, and guitar accessories along with normal record store merch. Kind of sad how barren CR has become with instrument stores. When I was a kid, there was Carma Lou's on Center Pt Rd, Music Loft on 1st Ave, I think one in Chechz Village.
Ya CR sucks now for guitar stores. Thanks GC! I taught at Music Loft for ten years and also gave lessons at Somewhere in Iowa Guitars. I used to haunt Music Go Round. I think it's too hard to compete with online sales. I loved to support my local stores. A good alternative is Bob's Guitars in Cedar Falls. Worth the trip. I go up there and load up on strings and supplies.
Just about to buy one, so this was useful
Oh good! Thanks for stopping by
Lol. I have one too. What are you gonna do with yours Brook ?
I'm going to check the string height at the nut, straighten the neck, try a thicker gauge of strings and remember to not press hard. Probably get it to a student if I can make it playable
@ I will remember. Thank you Sir. That’s my plan too. Give it away you some young gun slinger just itching to concur the world !
"it'll fix everything"....ever why some guys are addicted to pedals? lol..I think good for studio work and for a Childs first guitar(seems to be designed for that)
I was not loving the sounds of the pickups today with this guitar. Looks kind of appealing but not very inspiring to play.
Can you get chorus with your amp, ? EQ? I love pedals.
Yes, I have a chorus pedal. That might hide the out of tune quality a touch! I had an EQ but let it go to a new home.
Wah! Broken head! It's a pity.
hey that was fun and challening, thanks for sharing!
good info.and well explained. You now have a new subscriber, Thanks!
Hello John! I hope I can maintain these standards. Really glad to hear from you.
Great video
Thank you! I really like this chord!
Thats pretty cool man! I'd say you have your bases covered in the amps department!
I'm about done....maybe a tweed Princeton and I can kick back
@brookhoover1384 I think my next amp is going to be a Carr. They have some pretty amazing, beautiful amps. Just can't figure out which one for sure!
My finger picking guitar teacher is Stefan Grossman. He teaches as if the thumb would be the left hand playing on the piano doing a ''Boom Chick'', the index finger playing the melody of the right hand on the piano and our left hand would be as if we have 3 hands if playing the piano. If you search You Tube for Fingerpicking Blues Guitar in A, GtrWorkShp you can see this video and other of his videos too.
I would like to check that out thanks a ton Eric.
I need a good tube amp....
@@jeanlawson9133 this is a more than good amp
Look around for a Fender Champ from the 70's, might be a good bargain out there somewhere. I have 5 Champs and will use them live at gigs. They sound great for playing at home or in the studio. Put a mic on it or not for live gigs.
cool
Cool song huh? Thanks mate!
Got it mate 👍
