    What do you add to your companion mix except marigold? I think i'll try faba bean and kale and 1-2 root vegetable since i use the no dig potatoes technique for expanding my garden one row at a time each year without to mecannized work. They have deeper roots than potatoes, it will help break down more the soil of the new garden space

    • @P3Permaculture
      @P3Permaculture ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought I had put the image of the companion mix. It’s onions lettuce parsnip and potato, but I also have peach and tatsoi, and pakchoi. Bush beans, celery, corn, garlic, marigolds, onions, and peas all do well planted near potatoes. Avoid planting potatoes near asparagus, Brassicas, carrots, cucumber, kohlrabi, melons, parsnips, rutabaga, squash, sunflower, and turnips

    • @P3Permaculture
      @P3Permaculture ปีที่แล้ว

      But remember you need to check if those are all compatible, like beans go with potatoes and so do onions but beans and onions or any allium don’t mix

    • @P3Permaculture
      @P3Permaculture ปีที่แล้ว

      Also avoid all brassicas with potatoes

    • @raphaelblais8191
      @raphaelblais8191 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will see about brassicas. Only thing i read about them and potatoes are possible nitrogen competition. Some web site list them as good companions. Seeing how much foliage i had last year on my tuber, it seem a rich area. Will probably try some kale anyway, i do not eat a mouthful of it, so it would not be a desaster if it is a failure.

    • @P3Permaculture
      @P3Permaculture ปีที่แล้ว

      @@raphaelblais8191 LOL yeah it is confusing, I seem to remember once doing kale and potatoes and leeks, In reality you don't want to much nitrogen for potatoes as they will only produce greens and not many potatoes. One old trick a very old farmer told me is to put each potato in a comfrey leaf when you plant, I think the idea is the comfrey leaf has accumulated potash.

    In my agricultural NorCal region, we had mostly prune trees everywhere, which kept us cooler. Then ripped out for more profitable grape vines, just as our temps shot through the roof & our multi-year droughts set in. Yes, shade absolutely matters, even when monocultured.

      @@P3Permaculture Anyone not from BigAg (which is always monocultured!) agrees, but except for the ever-drier & ever-hotter Californian Climate Changes, this simplest switch from a tree to a vine seems to harden your clear-eyed observations. My parents managed/worked a tiny but intensively broad Market Garden that I am going to try and move towards permaculture. I am starting with willow trees to shade my newbie chicken flock.

      @@eliseville you can cut them with as much other mulch material as possible and I would say let them compost in a pile for a year. But if you have no other mulch, you can still use it and when you get some more hardwood mulch start mixing it in. No dig, it's going to save far more than labour, it will ensure soil is healthier for coming years if there are zero chemical inputs. The difference in taste is amazing from the vegetables, fruits grown this way. Geoff Lawton, Dr. Elaine Ingham, Canadian Permaculture Legacy, and the people who grow for farmer's market sales all avoid using peat moss. I have a vermiculture compost setup for an all year fertilizer, extract, and starting seeds.

    • @P3Permaculture
      @P3Permaculture ปีที่แล้ว

      I know tons of farmers market people who still use tillage and plastic mulch and pest moss. We don’t use any of those and strongly recommend against it! I ask have a big vermicompost in the basement I can’t wait to get a black soldier fly setup in a greenhouse once we find land. It’s hard to scratch the surface of these subjects in a short video like this. You never can do it justice. No dig all the way!

  • @thejosuchav
    @thejosuchav ปีที่แล้ว

    I want to make a joke like this was Reddit. Like, okay but no explain it to me like I'm five because I was a lot of information. But I'm worried that it is going to backfire on this platform. So let me instead just be direct: I would appreciate the gift of understanding how the hell there still snow on the ground first of all. Second, how did you pull that off. That is crazy!

    • @P3Permaculture
      @P3Permaculture ปีที่แล้ว

      It is always a risk on comments the vultures are always circling!! We still have snow on the ground because we had a berry snowy winter and well climate change has done away with the norm which would be no more snow by Easter for us. We are in hardiness zone 4 where are you? Secondly microclimates are simply using the different material types and reflectivity or solar gain to change the local climate conditions. So 2 hours more sun makes more snow melt, add a black metal wheelbarrow which black absorbs more light then white snow so it gets warmer and radiates it to the surrounding area. Meaning that those small changes makes it melt faster there and then let’s the crocus’s bloom. Hope that was clear

    • @thejosuchav
      @thejosuchav ปีที่แล้ว

      @@P3Permaculture yeah, that's pretty clear. Did you do something to reflect light into that area or is it just the reflectiveness of the snow hitting the heatsink in general? I'm somewhere between some 8 and 7b, so I don't foresee having snow to wrestle with, but if I can get an extra month of growth with this idea I wouldn't be mad. The other thing is that I'm vastly ignorant about gardening all around. I spent a lot of my life in the tropics so food just grows everywhere without me having to do anything about it. So, it's early in my learning process... Just in case I sound dumb. It's because I don't know.

    • @P3Permaculture
      @P3Permaculture ปีที่แล้ว

      Because of the way our landlord has the cedar hedges this area gets just a few more hours of sun naturally, The point in this clip was to observe microclimates and then we can make them better. We just left the wheel barrow there by accident and it helped. you might still have snow but not like we do, and either way microclimates are still golden to get you late pen, or those fruits that are just on the limits of your zone.

    • @P3Permaculture
      @P3Permaculture ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s so important to setup soakage pits, and waste water mana gênent and heavy mulch to maximize the water efficiency. Watering from the top is a stop gap measure that we use when in extreme drought and still we only do it at night. Get yourself some soaker hose, and a pile of wood chips and setup a timer to irrigate at night and it should be a good start.
