Spine - "L.O.H." / "Swine" at The Bottleneck
It's often difficult to make a crowd move when you're the first band on and the sun hasn't gone down yet, but Spine pulled it off when opening for Drain at The Bottleneck last month. Touring acts Drug Church and Drain brought things to a fever pitch, but our Kansas City boys achieved an admirable level of crowd participation. And would you believe that this sold out gig (roughly 400 heads) was Spine's first ever time playing Lawrence, Kansas in their 12 years as a band? I personally swiped through dozens of old flyers to confirm this. The band's new album, Raíces, comes out June 30 via Convulse.

Bennett Oliver Weaver - "Bouquet" at Farewell
มุมมอง 87ปีที่แล้ว
Sorry to bring you a song that discusses familial tumult on Mother's Day, but you know, maybe someone needs to hear it. Bennett Weaver had not performed live since before the pandemic began, so his return to the stage last month brought out a small army of friends happy to see him doing what he does best. "Bouquet" features a gorgeous melody picked by Weaver on his acoustic, the influence of Mi...
Sanitizers - "Count Me Out" at Howdy
มุมมอง 219ปีที่แล้ว
Denver hardcore punks Sanitizers made a positive first impression with their 2022 demo (out via Invisible Audio), but their self-titled EP (out last month via Convulse) is an impressive step forward. The band offered up songs like the furious "Count Me Out" at its Kansas City gig a few days after the new tape's release. Howdy's bare bones layout was the perfect environment for a set full of wal...
Flooding - "Brave Men Run (Away From Me)" at Howdy
มุมมอง 225ปีที่แล้ว
Flooding is having as busy a spring as any band in the metro. Following a two-week East Coast tour and a three-way split tape with Abandoncy and Nightosphere, the Lawrence trio is preparing for a five-day Midwest tour in June, a handful of local gigs, and eventually, the release of its second full-length. Enjoy this clip of "Brave Men Run (Away From Me)" from the tour kickoff show at Howdy earl...
New Obsessions - "M" at Howdy
มุมมอง 126ปีที่แล้ว
There are few Kansas City musicians I'd trust to attempt a performance of a Cure cover, but Jorge Arana makes that shortlist. While opening for MSPaint this past November, Arana chose to conjure "M" from the band's 1980 album Seventeen Seconds and immediately captured the hearts of every certified goth in the room. (Salute to sound man Deano for fixing that speaker as the song begins.) Follow @...
Final Atomic Battle - "Portals To Gore" at Howdy
มุมมอง 140ปีที่แล้ว
Final Atomic Battle is a Kansas City war metal act that features members of local institutions like Spine and Youth Pool. If they keep a steady pace, there's a chance they could become just as integral to the town's DIY scene. "Portals To Gore" is a track from the band's debut EP, Magick And Artillery, released this past October. Be forewarned: this performance from last month's Vomit Forth gig...
Missouri Executive Order 44 - "138 Years" / "Fuckin' Boggs" at Howdy
มุมมอง 264ปีที่แล้ว
Whoever told you that you can't learn about American history and thrash around in an empty art gallery was lying to you. Missouri Executive Order 44 opened Spine's recent tour homecoming show with a pair of songs named for the man who issued the band's namesake piece of legislation expelling Mormons from our state and the amount of time it took before it was formally repealed. (This video was f...
The Callous Daoboys - "What Is Delicious? Who Swarms?" at Encore
มุมมอง 110ปีที่แล้ว
Immediately following a pause in the set that included a dance remix of a Slipknot classic, Georgia mathcore maniacs The Callous Daoboys launched into "What Is Delicious? Who Swarms?" Anyone who ever had a popping MySpace page can probably appreciate the track. There's a chug-heavy breakdown, multiple different screams and growls, some emo whining. An open-minded (and perhaps slightly nostalgic...
Perfume USA - "Pillow Talk" at Howdy
มุมมอง 136ปีที่แล้ว
Perfume USA will have been playing shows for two years this July and "Pillow Talk" has been a staple in their setlist for much of that time. The band has played more professional stages like recordBar and The Rino, but standing eye to eye with them on the floor at Howdy can sometimes make a heavy, moody song like this hit even harder. Fans will finally be rewarded with a sophomore EP this May. ...
Irradiated - "Subliminal" at Farewell
มุมมอง 134ปีที่แล้ว
The kids already know that Irradiated rocks. Older Kansas City punks got their first chance to find out about the new local group this past Saturday when Get Smart!, Orange Doe-Nuts, and The Bad Ideas played our inter-generational blowout at Farewell. Catch The O.D.'s Kurt Witt singing along on this Suicidal Tendencies classic "Subliminal." Follow @ShuttlecockMag on social media and visit www.S...
Flora - "Violets Are Blue" at Howdy
มุมมอง 117ปีที่แล้ว
Assisted by her father Dan on guitar and her uncle Sam on drums, Flora Billen opened last night's gig at Howdy. The Lawrence musician turned 16 just last week but possesses the composure of a performer beyond her years. "Violets Are Blue," a steady but melancholy pop tune about sudden heartbreak, was featured on Flora's 2022 album, Emerald City, and is a standout in her small but growing catalo...
Portrayal Of Guilt - "Anesthetized" at Farewell
มุมมอง 195ปีที่แล้ว
It feels good to be bad sometimes. Texas trio Portrayal Of Guilt knows this. Whether you're the band crafting gloomy blackened hardcore or a fan hurling herself off the stage and knocking over the mic stand (love you, Diyana), there was plenty of of the good kind of evil lurking at Farewell on this evening last month. Follow @ShuttlecockMag on social media and visit www.ShuttlecockMusic.com. Gr...
Sky Callie - "CB Freestyle" at Farewell
มุมมอง 99ปีที่แล้ว
Sky Callie only has an EP and a handful of singles under her belt so far, but if upcoming releases are anything like "CB Freestyle," Kansas Citians will be demanding more. The track showcases both her technical abilities and her clever pen. Sky's set was a highlight at a showcase last month at Farewell. Follow @ShuttlecockMag on social media and visit www.ShuttlecockMusic.com. Grab a t-shirt, b...
Spine - "Burden Of Life" at Howdy
มุมมอง 137ปีที่แล้ว
Hardcore kids and punks often poke fun at vocalists who speak earnestly and at length between songs. Sometimes those vocalists ramble for minutes on end and ultimately are just preaching to the choir. Spine's Antonio Marquez does the opposite of that. Simultaneously, he carries the torch of this hardcore tradition forward while doing his best to welcome new faces in the scene. Most importantly,...
Konrad Hell - "Helium" at Farewell
มุมมอง 842 ปีที่แล้ว
Unlike the scrappy, jangly cuts provided on his first solo recordings as Konrad Hell, the Total Sham vocalist delivered something almost inarguably more intriguing. Accompanied by Sky Cowdry on keys (and at other points guitar), Konrad's performance earlier this month was loungey in nature while retaining the grit and swagger of a much louder rock-n-roll band. If you always wanted to see Sid Vi...
