Tradesman Contact Wheel for Shaping, Blending and Thinning
@GrindKS1 Ryan with Grind Knife Sharpening
Today, we are looking at Tradesman's new Contact wheel for the Edge Apex and Power Strop. This is a soft contact wheel designed to have some give. This allows the 10" contact wheel to flatten out and act as a bigger or smaller wheel based on the amount of pressure you apply. This is usefull for stropping, thinning, and especially blending and polishing. This is a quick demo of using the wheel to reduce a bolster on a Wustof chef knife. Feel free to reach out with questions!

Hello, What size are the belts that you use on this machine?
@@AE-zj6oc 2x42
Thank you, I really enjoy your videos. God bless
Do these resin bonded diamond wheels need a coolant mixed in the water? And what coolant to use?
@@thomasstapel6824 no just tap water
Damn this looks nice, I should be getting the new machine aswell 😂 single or dual wheel. I will think about it.
if it helps the double wheel machine comes with 2 diamonds wheels and it's on sale till end of the year!
Nice work Ryan ! we are going to try some thinning in the shop tomorrow
The wheel is fun to use, the results speak for themselves!
Man that bolster reduction is NICE looking.
I love it! hard to do thru camera, but great results!
Have you ever used the jig and used other CBN wheels or Tormek wheels on the Apex?
What may be helpful for us audience people is telling us the speed that you’re running the Apex on. Meaning the actual speed on the monitors unit
You should also consider tilting the microscope monitor appetite to face the audience better. Thank you for your videos thus far
I also have the Apex myself with the two belt attachment. Let me ask you I know the prototype is probably out by now. But what are the benefits? I understand production but what are the benefits of expanding so much money on this particular standalone belt grinder?I mean, I love Jeff’s products really I do but they come at a cost. I understand you’re the US distributor so your prices are next to nothing but explain to me the benefits of having a Cutter Master belt sander compared to ones that are way cheaper?
I don’t think I’ve seen any of your videos where you use the Tormek Universal support bar. Have you ever tried it as such?
Where did you get the long magnet bars?
@@Phil.D333 contact perfect edge cutlery in san mateo!
@ By the looks of their webpage, they have nowhere near the lengthy bars that you have on your video
@@Phil.D333 call them!
Awesome
No Bess, no paper test why not?
Thanks for the video Ryan. Just subscribed. Need to understand more about these cutters brand. Question where did you get those long knife magnets?
Also, sir, have you ever used a kangaroo tail for stropping or honing?
@Phil.D333 over used kangaroo and buffalo leather but mostly just use black felt now.
First of all, what’s the price of these resin bonded diamond wheels? And how do they differ from Tormeks diamond wheels as far as being advantageous?
@@Phil.D333 grindknifesharpening.com/products/resin-bond-diamond-sharpening-wheel
@Phil.D333 tormek wheels are plated means 1 layer of abrasive, resin wheels have high grit concentration evenly mixed thru a wear layer, also made to run in water with no additives, also expected life span of 10x 20x of tormek. I'm at well over 7k knives on one wheel! added much nicer finish so you can skip from 100 to 1000 efficiently meaning only 2 steps instead of 4.
@@GrindKS1 in your opinion being a user please offer your input how did they differ?
@@GrindKS1 These are the same wheels as cutters am I correct?
@@GrindKS1 sorry I missed your response lower down. What’s the difference between these resin bonds and what other sell in Europe that are 6pu, 3pu?
First of all, what’s the price of these resin bonded diamond wheels? And how do they differ from Tormeks diamond wheels as far as being advantageous?
@Phil.D333 they are more expensive up front but much cheaper overall. $600 each, but you only need 2 that is first advantage, second is estimated life span of 20000+ knives vs maybe a 1000 on tormek. next is cut speed is the same on its lady day as it's first day, the abrasive doesn't degrade like on plated wheels. finally it's variable pressure. the diamond are suspended in resin and can act as different grits depending. on your pressure!
Thanks for the video but the way the cameras pointing down I certainly can’t tell how to use that universal bar. Don’t know if it’s above the wheel and how the jig sits on it aside you would’ve been helpful especially for us visual learning people thank you anyway.
No cut test 😢
Ryan from there would there be any sense going to a 2000 grit stone before you strop?
@youngsapling1 diminishing marginal returns. what is your goal? sharper sure, but sharper doesn't mean better performance.. actually working on a 600 g wheel as a finish option too.. applications for finer edge are exceptionally limited.
Now I have new tool goals. Great video, thank you
Thanks, let me know if I can help you with a machine!
This is very helpful. Have an old Tormek for chisels but want to get into professional biz and ready to spend $ on the Tradesman system
@markm4367 of you want to talk details, let's set up a call to discuss the options that would suit you and we can give you all the details! 605 681 6637
hey Ryan do you use the same bar settings for the strop? I can definantly tell mine deburrs on the same setting, but when I look I can tell it has polished more at the back, it could be that because the leather has a little give it compensates for the extra thickness of the strop. Regardless I got really good results.
@Musicpins you have afew choices. since I have a dedicated stropping machine I zero it with the belt on this compensates for that. otherwise call Brad and ask for the clip for the jig. it clips on and turns the knife up slightly for stropping
@@GrindKS1 I thought of getting an extra stropper machine at first, but I decided to wait, maybe I have the opportunity to get one with an AC motor later now! Why not. Thats nice, thats far to send such a small part to europe, maybe I can produce one of my own :)
@Musicpins give me a call! 6056816637
@Musicpins Another comment you left i cannot respond to unfortunately, The brushless machines are available. I can help you out with your order or any details if you like!
What percentage of your revenue is from knife sales vs knife sharpening?
@bwillan great question, as a whole about 60% sharpening 40% sales... but a large majority of profit is from sharpening. knife margins are not amazing usually...
great video. would love to see how you worked through those messed up knives....also, not sure why you ended up with about 10 extra minutes of just black screen on the video lol
Wow they made it really easy to zero. Nice video!
I ran the machine for some time without realizing it, my results were good not great. After zero the results are really amazing!
Does sharpening to 1000 grit on the resin diamond wheel produce an edge with a little tooth to it? I usually sharpen my kitchen knives to 600 grit so that cutting a tomato is very easy.
@bwillan 1000 is plenty enough tooth for tomatoes and peppers and meat! I'll do a follow up video when I get to the grocery store!
This looks really good Ryan I can't wait to get my wheels, cuttermasters seems very busy atm so I must have patience hehe. Is this 100 grit and 1200 on the video?
100 to 1000,g in this video! if you have specific questions shoot me a text 605 681 6637, I can help further!

Thank you for that Pat, The machine is amazing, works great as a stand alone machine, but it's a perfect pair with the Apex! More videos to come. and I cannot wait to see the other stuff you guys come up with that Ive been talking to Jeff about!
I hope you love our new prototype Servo Strop :) My name is Pat I work at cuttermasters with Jeff and I built this little single wheel wonder machine and I truly hope you will love it. I personally assembled and tested it before Abbit packed it up carefully and had it shipped to you. looking forward to see some more videos :) thank you for showing the youtube world how easy it can be to assembled and get these machines singing. we spend a lot of time here at the shop testing and proving each machine we send out so that they run smooth and perfect. With each shipment we pray shipping and border inspections do not damage our high precision parts. This is the very first power servo single belt over wheel of its kind. We have a second available just like that one. I'm not sure if its for sale yet, butJeff tells me I have to build at least 10 more so we can prove the design. your help and feedback is amazing and welcomed. As always we stand by our machines and are always willing to help our customers. Feel free to contact us or ask for me directly at cuttermasters.com. Just ask for Pat! I build these machines and know them inside out. yours truly Manufacturing Specialist and head machinist at Cuttermasters.
Such a cool machine! Compact versatility is my jam. I do think it’s weird how much I enjoy seeing sharpeners do their thing. It’s really nice to see an actual edge magnified through your progression. I’m the knife chick but because of that I know that as the knives live throughout the decades of use they serve sharpeners are their caretakers. Now I must say that I’m a green paste girl but I do like your blue on my EDC’s😉. I enjoyed the entire thing!🔪♥️
thank you so much for your input, Blue, green, white, some black, they work well, I'm too lazy to clean the green lol. I cannot wait to work with you on videos in the future!
I am definitely loving the edges from the new machines. I didn't think it was possible to get a better edge than the ones you produced on the Tormek but these Tradesman machines are amazing and the edges it put on my blades is the best edges I have ever had. From watching you sharpen the other day it looks like they are much more efficient and consistent as well.
Thank you, working on your collection is always a joy! I'm thrilled with the results and excited to share it with the world!
