Mount Limbo - Nevada Desert
Mount Limbo is a very remote mountain peak located about 2 and a half hours' drive from Reno, Nevada, situated in the middle of the desert, miles away from human habitation. The summit block is particularly impressive - a tiny granite pedestal, no more than a foot or two wide, provides a panorama of desert wasteland in all directions.
I decided to drive out to Reno, Nevada from my nest in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Labor Day weekend, to see what this peak is all about. I found Reno to be a cool place to visit. No cool in terms of temperature, though - it was 95 out and I was sweltering.
I woke up early the next morning and got to the trailhead right as the sun's first morning rays painted the desert peaks across the valley. Sparing no time, I scrambled up some slopes and made it to the Limbo ridgeline proper.
The highlight of the excursion was the tiny summit pinnacle with endless vistas as far as the eye can see. One thing I love about these desert peaks is the sense of space you get. A very cool peak to climb indeed.

Kennedy Peak - Emigrant Wilderness, CA
มุมมอง 1515 หลายเดือนก่อน
In the Emigrant Wilderness lies a remote, obscure mountain peak known as Kennedy Peak. On June 22, 2024, I embarked on a quest for its summit, leaving from the Kennedy Meadows trailhead and reaching my campsite at Kennedy Lake. After battling mosquitos, horse people, and a precarious ridgeline, I found my way to this grand summit and made it back to civilization to tell the tale.
Mouaputa and the Island of Moorea

I went on a quest to French Polynesia, in the South Pacific, to climb a mountain peak known as Mouaputa, which is located on the rugged and beautiful island of Moorea. Situated just Northwest of Tahiti, Moorea has some of the most rugged mountains in the world, some of which have never even been climbed. My trip to French Polynesia began on Saturday, June 8, 2024, where I took a red-eye flight ...
Agassiz Peak - South Lake Tahoe

Agassiz Peak is beautiful mountain located in the Crystal Range, which is in the heart of the Desolation Wilderness near Lake Tahoe, California. The route I chose to climb this splendid peak took me to a base camp in Lake Aloha and a climb up the "Slabs of Insanity" the following morning.
Organ Needle - New Mexico

Organ Needle is the highest peak in the Organ Mountains, located in Southern New Mexico. Just East of the city of Las Cruces, the Organ Mountains make an incredibly picturesque backdrop to the city. The hike itself is a dayhike, consisting of a trail leading up to a section near the top I call "the Maze" where some basic routefinding and navigation is needed. There is a very short 4th class sec...

North Twin
มุมมอง 185ปีที่แล้ว
North Twin is a reddish-orange pyramid-shaped mountain peak located in northern Washington, near Mount Baker. The West Ridge consists of about 2,000 feet of class 3 scrambling, although I donned rock shoes near the ridge's headwall and was glad I brought them. Personally, I felt there were a couple of easy class 4 moves on the route with huge exposure. The quality of the rock is superb, with a ...

Deerskull Peak, formerly known as 'Mount Thielsen,' is a very dramatic rock spire which is located due North of Crater Lake, Oregon. It is very prominent and unmistakable due to its unique pointy shape, which is unlike any other mountain peak in the region. Deerskull is surrounded by an endless sea of trees and also is very close to Diamond Lake, which has a campground on the Northwest end. The...

Graveyard Peak, California
มุมมอง 2763 ปีที่แล้ว
This peak is a hidden gem, tucked far off in the middle of nowhere down a narrow, bumpy Sierra road. I hiked up to Devil's Bathtub and camped there, which really should be called Angel's Bathtub, because it's quite a beautiful and majestic lake and the only evil spirits there were the mosquitos. The next morning, after a cup of coffee, I hiked up to the named high point on the map, Graveyard Pe...
Matterhorn Peak, CA - East Couloir

Matterhorn Peak is probably my favorite summit in the Sierra. The route I took is the standard East Couloir. I did this route on May 30, 2021. You can also go up the backside but I think heading up the glacier side is a better experience.
Half Dome safety - when the cables are down
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I posted a video in Nov. '20 about climbing Half Dome when the cables were down. In that video I didn't go into much detail and I got some good questions in the comments section. Hopefully this will help you on your Half Dome quest to make informed decisions about your personal safety. Remember, you can climb Half Dome any time of the year. Always have a turn-around time and turn back if the we...

I was hesitant to sit through a 1:28 minute video, but soooooooooooooo glad I did. Very informative and well explained.
Thanks for checking out my video! Glad I could help!
Best Instructional video ever👍! Thanks a lot🙏💯
Glad it was helpful!
yeah this just inspired me - definitely going to research this skill set and build a physical library of maps now and in the future to incorporate into my practice. brilliant breakdown. thank you thank you thank you.
No problem! Glad I can help!
Extremely well explained and the way you put the camera in such specific position so people would understand the minor move is two different skill set. "You are passionate academic professor."
Thank you!
thanks!
My friend, I am military and know land navigation well. I came here because i have never used a base plate, only my military lensatic. I bought the Silva ranger 2. The detail you have in this video is absolutely applaudable. Being precise and very accurate. Thank you.
Thank you for your service! My pleasure!
Great video! I was just researching this peak some days ago (and some others ), and you just upload this video, I have been very lucky to discover it, thanks! Did you follow the ridge from the parking spot up to the summit? Was it hard in terms of bushes? I see the road seems good for a passanger car right? Is it possible to follow your track in some of the platforms? Thanks for sharing and congrats for the video.
Glad I can help! It was pretty straight-forward to get up there from the road. Many cross-country options are possible. I basically kept in the shadows as much as possible and then followed the ridgecrest north. The last 700 feet or so was a little more tricky class 3 scrambling. The summit block was not too bad, although a little vertigo-inducing. Go early and avoid the heat. Thanks for watching and happy trails to you!
@@summitsparrow ! We made it last week! We travel from Spain to the US to do this and some other peaks in the Cascades. Your video and diagram were really usefull. You were totally right, the Hot was really intense up there, we almost gave up... we got the secondary summit and then we realize that to get the summit block it was required to descend some feet again, and it took some time to find the better passages, but finally we made it after almost 4h of ascending. Amazing views, atmosphere, solitude. I hope you can keep finding such a magnificent mountains like this and you can enjoy them, Kind regards!
@@gonzalogonzalezdelgado8866 I'm glad you made it up there and hope I can be helpful in your adventures. Take care and best wishes!
Welcome to Reno! Plenty of cool peaks to climb around here. Great video!
Great to meet a local! Reno was great, I love desert towns! Yeah, I actually read Nevada is the most mountainous state in the contiguous US. I'm all ears to any suggestions. Take care!
No wood slats along the cable in winter.
We descended the down cables before they got put up early in the season after climbing the NW face of HD in three days. Going down those cables was pretty exciting with all the wall gear we had.
Thank you for all your help. Great video.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
ok so your officially certifiable walking close tothe edge with crampons for the instagram shot,so dangerous ,people watching, dont dont do this stuff crampons on granite is a recipe for trouble.
I don't have an Instagram account. Nice try.
Holy frigging crap, I have heard of adrenaline junkies, but I also mostly had a heart attack watching you.

Want to say I'm glad to see another navigation video from you. Both your first map & compass video and this one have been extremely helpful in me trying to learn how to navigate with map & compass. Thank you very much! Also, the angle at 28:15 is 73 degrees. All the angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees, so 180-90-17=73.
Thanks a lot for your support and kind words! You are correct on the angle! It's 73 degrees; the angles add up to 180 in a right triangle. Take care and happy trails to you!
I ended up getting 325 degrees from google maps
Thx for picking up the litter! ❤
Such a good video thank you

Awesome views from the peak! Thinking of doing Granite Dome Loop in Emigrant Wilderness in August, thanks for recommendation!
Thanks! Granite Dome is great. There are a bunch of secluded lakes which are really pretty in the surrounding basins. Lewis Lake and Ridge Lake are both really nice and have good campsites.

If you're going to send a missile ballistic or not, you need more than compass azmuth. TargetAzmuth, Target distance, the height difference between the firing point and The Target. With the help of aming circles and via the Orientation Azhmut, you find out the angle difference between OA and TA. the angle should be in MILS, not degrees. In your case, you have the best chance of hitting the island if you put the compass away and aim for the target. The target is visible. There are no prisoners left on Alcatraz anymore, and if there were, you must give them a chance to defend themselves against your view of humanity.

This was once part of required geography class. I learned this in 7th grade. By the time we reached 12th grade we were sent to the mountains and told to trail hike. No tech but maps, and compass. We used landmarks and wrote them on the map. Wish they taught this in schools again.
Thanks! Me too! Hope you enjoyed!

Please watch the video again more closely. This was covered in the declination adjustment section and throughout the video thoroughly. Thank you for your comment!
Can you direct me to a resource where one can purchase the type of topographic maps that you have? I live in Northern California.
NatGeo maps are the best quality (what I used in the video). Go to: www.natgeomaps.com You can also find them on Amazon and at REI. For sections not covered by NatGeo maps, you will need to use an alternate source. Consider USGS for reference, although they are not practical for taking with you hiking on the trail: store.usgs.gov/map-locator

@@summitsparrow It's not ads per se that were the issue, it was the volume. Ads every 2 minutes is categorically absurd. I've never seen a video have so many.
