Agassiz Peak - South Lake Tahoe
Agassiz Peak is beautiful mountain located in the Crystal Range, which is in the heart of the Desolation Wilderness near Lake Tahoe, California. The route I chose to climb this splendid peak took me to a base camp in Lake Aloha and a climb up the "Slabs of Insanity" the following morning.

Organ Needle - New Mexico

Organ Needle is the highest peak in the Organ Mountains, located in Southern New Mexico. Just East of the city of Las Cruces, the Organ Mountains make an incredibly picturesque backdrop to the city. The hike itself is a dayhike, consisting of a trail leading up to a section near the top I call "the Maze" where some basic routefinding and navigation is needed. There is a very short 4th class sec...
Nemesis - Santa Monica Mountains
มุมมอง 686 หลายเดือนก่อน
Nemesis is a peak in the Santa Monicas (Southern California), otherwise known on maps as "Brent's Mountain." A few things really make this peak unique. For one thing, it is extremely close to civilization, yet at the same time, offers climbers a challenging routefinding puzzle with obstacles such as poison oak, thick vegetation, crumbly rock, and slick, wet cliffs. Despite having a very short a...

Mount Ellinor - Olympic Mountains
มุมมอง 7711 หลายเดือนก่อน
Mount Ellinor is a popular day hike in the Olympics - and for good reason! You just can't beat these views from the summit. With Lake Cushman down below to the South, verdant valleys all around, and Sawtooth Ridge to the Northwest as backdrops, this is one of the more picturesque summits I've been to. The climb up was fairly straight-forward, although when I went there was a fair amount of snow...
North Twin - Washington

North Twin is a reddish-orange pyramid-shaped mountain peak located in northern Washington, near Mount Baker. The West Ridge consists of about 2,000 feet of class 3 scrambling, although I donned rock shoes near the ridge's headwall and was glad I brought them. Personally, I felt there were a couple of easy class 4 moves on the route with huge exposure. The quality of the rock is superb, with a ...

Graveyard Peak, California

This peak is a hidden gem, tucked far off in the middle of nowhere down a narrow, bumpy Sierra road. I hiked up to Devil's Bathtub and camped there, which really should be called Angel's Bathtub, because it's quite a beautiful and majestic lake and the only evil spirits there were the mosquitos. The next morning, after a cup of coffee, I hiked up to the named high point on the map, Graveyard Pe...

If you're going to send a missile ballistic or not, you need more than compass azmuth. TargetAzmuth, Target distance, the height difference between the firing point and The Target. With the help of aming circles and via the Orientation Azhmut, you find out the angle difference between OA and TA. the angle should be in MILS, not degrees. In your case, you have the best chance of hitting the island if you put the compass away and aim for the target. The target is visible. There are no prisoners left on Alcatraz anymore, and if there were, you must give them a chance to defend themselves against your view of humanity.

What a great refresher! Thanks!
No prob!
This was once part of required geography class. I learned this in 7th grade. By the time we reached 12th grade we were sent to the mountains and told to trail hike. No tech but maps, and compass. We used landmarks and wrote them on the map. Wish they taught this in schools again.
Thanks! Me too! Hope you enjoyed!
Nice! But to be very precise you need to convert magnetic North to true N
Please watch the video again more closely. This was covered in the declination adjustment section and throughout the video thoroughly. Thank you for your comment!
Can you direct me to a resource where one can purchase the type of topographic maps that you have? I live in Northern California.
NatGeo maps are the best quality (what I used in the video). Go to: www.natgeomaps.com You can also find them on Amazon and at REI. For sections not covered by NatGeo maps, you will need to use an alternate source. Consider USGS for reference, although they are not practical for taking with you hiking on the trail: store.usgs.gov/map-locator

I think you have articulated many people's thoughts so well. I'm not a mountaineer, just an avid hiker, but it sickens me to see the attitudes westerners have to their 'accomplishments' that could not happen if the local people had not set up a spoonfed route for them. Most of them would never have been able to set up ropes to create that trail. The lady who summited broke nim perja's record, but Nim had set up nearly every route himself. To the point that he was the reason many actually summited K2 where most were adamant it couldn't get done. She just followed in the path of others. No accomplishment there having been a hand in the death of another human due to irresponsible expectations and greed.
Totally agree! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Hopefully we can change the mindset of the adventure community so that we can not lose sight of the big picture. People like these tarnish the reputation of the adventure community as a whole and that's unfortunate. I feel the same about the Mt. Everest base camps with all their trash they leave behind.

My man logging bearings like a submarine captain
Am i able to find the degrees for alcatraz from Mount Tam east peak? Or was i suppose to look at the compass on your video?
I'll go over the Alcatraz problem and the answer in the sequel - coming soon!
@@summitsparrowoops, my question was incomplete. I meant to say using Google maps. Am i able to find the degree using Google maps. I tried but couldn't find it
No you can find the location on Google Maps but not the bearing. To find the bearing you will need a compass. If you want to take the true test then you go there to Mount Tam in person without a map and prior knowledge of the bearing and then you shoot a bearing with a calibrated compass and plot that bearing on the map when you get home. You might be asking why do I need to know the number if I can see the landmark? I'll go over that in the into sequence to the sequel, which is currently in production. @@l3loodyfingers
Brilliant, really well done. Thanks
Well what a surprise! I recently became interested in finally learning how to use a compass (with a map) and stumbled upon your awesome map interpretation class. As I concluded with your video I decided to check out your channel. When I saw a thumbnail of the Organ Mountains I became intrigued. Specifically because I am from Las Cruces currently residing in Houston Texas. Your video on Organ Needle was also AWESOME. I really appreciate your refreshing outlook on life and wanted to say KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.
Great to meet a local! I loved the area! And the people were super friendly too! Just glad I got to do this gem of a hike. Take care and glad you liked the map and compass video!
That is how I found this channel too. And I love how in this video, he incorporates the map reading. Super helpful.
Why did you set your magnetic declination to the one on the map set for 2013?
The declination number printed on the map from 2013 will float westward about 6 minutes a year. It says this on the map. I chose to use 13 degrees East from www.magnetic-declination.com (retrieved January 2022, when I filmed the video). Either way you figure it, you're going to end up with about 13 degrees East, which is the number I set my declination to in the video. I checked the declination today, and it's still 13 degrees East in January 2024.
Excellent tutorial! thanks for putting into one package all of the basics to help understand how to use the compass with a topo map. I usually download printable maps from the government site : "Get Maps/topoView or ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/. I tried to get one for the San Francisco Bay area but was unable to find one adequate for the test question. So I used good old Google Earth and measured a line from Mt Tam East Peak to Alcatraz and got a bearing of 129 degrees at 11.04 miles. For East Tam I used the parking area of the Visitor Center.
This dude loves saying Map and Mechinism but he does know his stuff 👍
Wow superb video! I'm going to have to watch it a few times and field work to get comfortable ,not complacent. Thank you for your efforts attention to detail and laymans terminology explanations. Skinner
Glad I could help! Take care and happy trails to you!
Instead of bringing a tape measure why not just use your compass string, and then put that length of string against the map scale? It works pretty good.
That will certainly work! I find the wind and everything makes it difficult to stick, but do what works for you! Take care!
A great map orienting class!!! Thank you!
Glad I could help! Happy trails!
if you're still in the area you should do filmore canyon up to organ too. That canyon is really pretty

19:50 My man makes the best video on compass use out there, but does not know what an add blocker is <3
I just saw your How TO use map and compass in detail video. Question. Going glamping, camping in a vehicle. My vehicle dies and forgot to take my phone. I remembered that a few miles away was a road. I taken out my compass to plot a bearing hopefully in the right direction. HOW DO I SET MY DECLINATIKN ON MY COMPASS WITHOUT THE MEANS OF HAVING THAT INFORMATION, SO I CAN GET BACK TO MY VEHICLE
Well declination is going to depend on where you are, so if you don't know that number for your location, your bearings can be 10 or even 20 degrees off. Whether you manually add / subtract the declination number or you set the adjustment in the bezel, you need to know what the declination adjustment number is. One thing you can do even if you don't know your declination number is plot backbearings to reverse your tracks. This will always work regardless of the declination number. I briefly covered backbearings in the video. Refer to The Map section. Keep in mind declination tells you where your reference direction (north) is. But that direction is not really relevant if you're just concerned with reversing your steps by following backbearings. Hope that helps!
Omg you around like a robot.....terrible. You need to relax
I would like to know after I set the declination on my Suunto compass, do I no longer change it whether I take the position on the map or on the compass?
The only time you need to change your declination adjustment is when you take and plot bearings in a new location. The declination adjustment is really just moving the "box" over to compensate for whatever angle the difference is between true north and magnetic north on your map.
@@summitsparrow thank you for your help
