Fortress of the Bears: Rebuilding Our Historic Alaska Hunting Cabin
Step back in time with us as we rebuild our family's historic Hood Bay bear camp in the wilds of Southeast Alaska. This spot on Admiralty Island was once my dad's base camp-long before yachts and modern comforts-where he’d welcome guests, explore by skiff, and return to a cozy cabin each night. This little spot we like to call "Hidden Bay Retreat" after the old Hidden Bay Cannery site in the bay in 1800's.
Now, after 50 years, we’re bringing that legacy back with a new log cabin on the shores of the Fortress of the Bears. Join us as we share memories, revive old traditions, and celebrate the untamed beauty of this incredible place.

Please don’t shoot anymore bears. They are beautiful creatures that God has created so we can enjoy them. I use to hunt when I was younger. I would never hunt to kill an animal now. I want to enjoy them through pictures and in person. I could leave them and know they were still alive. What a wonderful feeling l would have . God Bless.
pat seems a little creepy toward the guide great vid otherwise.
It is simply revolting and disgusting that they kill these magnificent wild animals for pleasure. They think they are very brave, shooting the animal with a rifle and telescopic sight. These people need medical help.
No tent, no bear fence just you and your plastic surgery provided by your rich husband and your yacht. Go away please. Make room for the real hunters
'Spine shots' often fail as happened on this big brown bear.
Absolutely beautiful.
Beautiful! I would rent that as a airbnb too.
Fun Fact, private land makes up .05% of Southeast, Alaska. It is 94% Federal, 3.4% Native lands, 2.5% State of Alaska, 0.25% Municipal Land Holdings, and 0.05% private. Yet paradoxically still affordable away from the population centers. Currently the best place on Earth for freedom and health.
I love the way you guys hunt
Excellent film and people I love Alaska
This film never gets old for us Sitka Blacktail addicts. Thank you.
Awesome we may have a new one we are filming in a few weeks….
Your hunts are so nice classy so nice to watch ❤🎉🎉 there’s more than the killing
This guide srvice calls themselves professional guides and I reality they'd be lost in 10 minutes if they went into the woods they wouldn't know what to do these hunts are bullshit you pay for there services to be on the boat you pay a trophy fee and then after you blow 40 grand on a 4 day hunt they expect and want a fucking tip when you get a bear Aldo listen to the acting that a hell of a nice bear all scripted words makes me laugh watching these people
I had the distinct pleasure of hunting with Mutts, Zach, their boys, and Todd in May 2018. I had goosebumps the whole time watching this and being able to relive the entire adventure. I could never have made this trip without a good friend Dave making it possible. I can never thank Dave enough for making this trip of a lifetime a reality. I realize now how incredibly lucky I was to be able to harvest two mature animals, both a brown and a black bear. You hear it over and over, but it is hard to express how close you feel to their family and the guides after hunting with them. They have an incredible family and a truly remarkable business. If this trip is on your bucket list and you can make it happen, I can't recommend it highly enough.
NOT a hunting video!! Friggin' disgraceful
Times have changed. When Lewis and Clark shot a bear. More oft than nought it was on like Donkey Kong. Every man for himself. After a few close calls they "lost interest". Modern high powered long range rifles have taken the fairness out of the hunt.
“Being on this boat, this is the way to hunt bear.” lol spoken like a real 🐱
Great video and such a beautiful place. Regards...
Holy cow. Glad I found your channel. Cinema quality. Informative every step of the way on every hunt. Keep up with the good work!
Well financed production, quality all around.
I recently found your channel and it is awesome, the quality, the view, the partnership. Regards and God bless.
I have never heard of someone wanting to go to Alaska to hunt black Bears!
Now, i know where to go for 8 foot black bear!
Hahahaha
Awesome, Ive been in that plane before! What time of year did you go out?
First few weeks of October
Shooting a bear after dark, minute 23, not a good choice
They're using expensive low-light scopes that give them excellent low light visual conditions, guides won't give the ok to shoot unless they're positive the client has the skill and conditions to successfully harvest the animal.
What an awesome adventure!! I also think that it's so great that you whole family is involved. What a blessing!!
Awesome film!! I think that it's so great that they are keeping the tradition alive!!
Excellent video! I enjoyed every second of it!
Ya'll did the right thing to digitize this. This belongs in the archives of well documented, informative hunting video's. Family legacy. Keep it going.
Wow. These narrated hunting vids takes me back 40+ years. Let me ask, are you folks wearing Sleeping Indian Wool or King of the Mountain Wool. I'm dating myself with that question.
We were KOM supporters for years. It was and is good stuff just heavy.
King of the Mountain!
I still wear it .
SICKENING SPORT!!!!
Then don't watch the channel.
@Steve-ev6vx ginger is one of those people who think you should get your meat at a grocery store where it's grown.
do you eat the meat??@@Buldgr
@@keithpace-on4nk From black bear? Yes, Sir.
@@keithpace-on4nk Anything wrong with that?
Didn’t even see it in a pich black. Good thing it wasn’t light out👁️👁️
Shooting light & camera light are totally different
the place is awesome but the restriction on distance and caliber i just don t think so good filming.
Terrible shot, you cripple it and had to finish it !
Post the videos of all your perfect shots.
@@Steve-ev6vx I haven't made a shot like that since I was 15 years old !
@@robowen5038 and how many giant brown bears have you killed? People get excited, things happen. The animal was put down pretty fast and didn't run off gut shot, so it could have been way worse.
Not every critter drops in it's tracks. Guess you would have known that if you'd actually hunted
@@kevincampbell643 Guess you don't understand what a bad shot is, everyone I know, doesn't take a shot, unless it's a clear heart shot !
Well done 👍🏻
What knife is mutts using to skin the bear out
Cold Steel Voyager
@@glacierguidesinc.3117 thank you.. love the videos I watch them with my boys all the time multiple times
Phenomenal family and team
What was the distance for that last shot? like 100 yards?
being a new hunter, the learning curve can be pretty steep, but seeing a film like this, just reinforces WHY I wanted to start hunting. Im not in it for the kill, Im in it for overall experience, if I get something, its just a bonus. Thank you for this film, well done from a FNG's perspective.
Want to talk to longtime Alaskans on your Yacht trip???😳😳😳
Kake???😳
Did I see an old logging road???😳prince of Wales island or Hoonah???
I gave up trying to describe Alaska to folks who have never seen it! Simple!😉👍
I haves lived In Alaska 45 years, I have hunted moose, caribou, Dall sheep up here, never would kill a bear up here for a hide! Any longtime Alaskan knows the coastal salmon eating bears are full of worms! Meat is nasty! Not real hunting either along our coastal streams! Oh I also live along southeast AK panhandle!
No place like our Alaska! Real simple!😳😉👍
LOVED IT WHAT AN AWESOME WAY TO HUNT GREAT GUIDE AND FAMILY GREAT BOAT BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY AND BEST BROS WHAT CAN BE BETTER
Mutts, I have seen many many hunting videos and televisions shows but this one had a totally different tone. So relaxing. Congratulations to you and your family on a life well lived and a truly touching filmed adventure.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We truly love what we do and the ability to share this with so many from all over the world.
Amazing ❤and she rocks!
Very informative! Great video!
I don't enjoy the Killin part 😊
why did you watch a hunting video?
