Silo: Who Are We Without Our History?
🎬 Welcome to this thought-provoking video essay and analysis of the captivating Apple TV+ Silo TV series, inspired by Hugh Howey's novels. 📚
#Silo #AppleTV #SiloAppleTV
💡 In this deep-dive review, we will explore the dystopian world of Silo, where history is not just forgotten but manipulated. We’re peeling back the layers of this chilling underground society to see how manipulated truths and distorted histories shape its inhabitants’ lives.
🎥 Starring Rebecca Ferguson, the Silo TV series portrays a stark underworld where propaganda runs rampant, and history is a mere plaything for unseen powers. The show creates an immersive dystopia, where approximately 10,000 people are confined and deceived for generations.
🧠 But the Silo series does not just stop at depicting a dystopian society. It masterfully weaves in philosophical concepts such as Plato's Allegory of the Cave, drawing parallels between the shadows in the cave and the manipulated realities the inhabitants face. It probes into the essence of social constructs and how society shapes our perceptions.
🔍 Is there more to our own reality? How does history define us? What happens when propaganda dictates a society's beliefs? This analysis of the Silo TV series delves into these questions and more, as we unmask the hidden meanings and get the hidden meaning explained.
📣 Join me, as we unmask the hidden meanings behind the Silo TV series, unravel its connections to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, and analyze how history and propaganda can mold societies.

Al contrario de Pedro, que deja la mejor impresión de Chile a donde vaya, tú estás avergonzando al país con tus mentiras (la familia de Pedro sí tenía la calidad de refugiados políticos) y viniendo a destilar veneno. The conclusion I’ve come to is that society needs both kinds of people. Those who conform and accept the traditions and ways of the past and hold them as sacred as well as those who relentlessly pursue the truth and challenge the established sacred traditions and beliefs. There are pathological versions of both, but most people aren’t pathological. One extreme is embodied by those who think everything is a conspiracy. They end up believing that 9/11 was a self-inflicted attack by the US government, they end up thinking the Holocaust never happened, they end up thinking that vaccines cause autism, etc. You can make up conspiracies on the spot and they’ll believe it as long as it challenges the established order and widely accepted norms. On the other hand you have people who hold onto the established dogma even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. They refuse to change even when it’s obvious. And they become dangerous and violent to anyone who questions the established norms. They are often blindingly naive and gullible. They accept the norms and see their belief in them as an act of loyalty and a show of solidarity with their culture and their neighbors. Both are dangerous. Most people aren’t pathological and lean one way or the other. The mistake I think many people make is thinking that only those who think for themselves are “good.” Those people who are curious are often the protagonists and those who blindly follow dogma are seen as villains. People equate curiosity with intelligence and they equate intelligence with worth. That’s one of the biggest downfalls of intellectuals, looking down on those who aren’t like them. In fact their favorite thing to do is to be intolerant of people who are intolerant… which while understandable, is still hypocritical and those who are looked down on aren’t so stupid that they don’t know that’s what’s happening. We need people who accept dogma and resist change to culture, science, religion, and our entire interpretation of reality. We need people who hold onto identity. If there weren’t people like that, we wouldn’t believe in anything as a society, we wouldn’t have an identity, and nobody would bother defending, preserving or protecting it. Who signs up to defend their country? It’s not intellectuals who constantly question the moral decisions of the United States and constantly criticize almost every aspect of it. They can’t take orders, they can’t make up their mind, and they sure as hell aren’t going to lay down their lives for some social construct that they barely believe in anyway. You want a loyal friend? You’ll find one in someone who blindly trusts you and believes in what you believe. And of course we need intellectuals and curious people. We need them to not take anything for granted and to think independently. We need them to construct new identities and adapt to new situations. We need them to bring new things into the world and challenge existing ways of thinking. They’ll be wrong a lot, but when they’re right, it’s so crucial that it’s worth them being wrong most of the time. We really would live in a dystopia if there no free thinkers who were constantly thinking critically. There are pros and cons to both but both aspects are needed. Our job is to understand that we need each other. Our job is not to be friends and avoid conflict with one another, but it’s also the case that we need to tolerate one another and not dehumanize or dismiss each other. We don’t have to understand each other, we just need to remember that all of us are trying to do the right thing and that there is enough room for everyone. I worry that when we dismiss each other or hate each other or paint each other as “the problem” like something to be extinguished, we’ve crossed a line and it’s not good for anyone. We both have catastrophic failure modes and society is at its worst when the intellects fail to squash extreme and dangerous ideological ideas and then blame the conformists for falling for it. They’re at their worst when they use their intellect to control the masses for some self-serving end or some far off utopian dream that requires human sacrifice. And conformists are at their worst when they allow their loyalty to an ideology to take higher priority than being a decent human being. They’re at their worst when they gladly rape, murder, pillage, and commit acts of terrible violence and suffering all for the cause and to prove their loyalty. Whether it’s a cause, a country, a belief system, or a tribe, they’re at their worst when they let that need to be loyal and true to overtake the need to be a decent person. We keep each other accountable and we need both kinds of people in society working together. So if you catch yourself wishing zealots, ideological activists, or corporate shills bodily harm, take a moment to breath. Yes, they aren’t thinking for themselves, but they are passionate and loyal and they know exactly who they are and what they stand for. And when they find a cause worth fighting for, they’re the ones that make it happen, they’re the ones that sacrifice and put skin in the game. And they’re the ones who protect the things we find valuable. And if you catch yourself not feeling bad if intellectual elites were hypothetically murdered, take a breath. They’re the ones who push us forward and help us adapt to an ever changing environment. They’re the ones who will find the truth even if they don’t like it and steer us in the right direction.

Thank you for your astute observations. I enjoyed this very much. Fame is , indeed, a fickle thing. I am glad he is enjoying the fruits of his labours which he so richly deserves. Unfortunately, many will regard him as the flavour of the month, and then move on to the next newcomer. I am glad he seems to be such a grounded person who is close to his family and friends that have stuck with him throughout the years. As a Trauma Counselor, I can attest to the incredible resiliency that is needed to move forward from an intra-familial suicide. He never mentions whether he got grief counseling, but I sincerely hope his family did so. I respect that he never gave up, when it could have been so easy to do. How refreshing that in an industry that can crush one's soul, he is a testament to not only perseverance, but to remaining as he so adequately reiterates, just being your authentic self. I wish you much luck in your future endeavors. ❤

Excellent analysis. You came real close to identifying the problems we face today with authoritarianism and narrative shaping w/o actually calling them out specifically...plausible deniability and all that. I saw a meme the other night..."Those that study history, are doomed to watch helplessly as others repeat it." I fear the populace are enthusiastically repeating the failures of the past.
