Season of the Sick
มุมมอง 6328 วันที่ผ่านมา
Everyone I talk to seems to have been sick recently, and some have been sick for a month or more! I, too, got sick and have been resting up as much as possible. I've still managed to really enjoy this season in London though.
Give Me To The Season -- first check in of December

Watch me, a millennial, fail at looking directly into the camera for the majority of this video. Help me go viral by using my song, Give Me To The Season, as sounds on TikTok. Or just listen to (open.spotify.com/track/4tMfqFyqYYTnSiD7f55mFK?si=00e9d51e713f41e2) or buy it (thatnikkiyouknow.bandcamp.com/track/give-me-to-the-season).

This week, I had a lot to talk about. My mind has been super stimulated in a lot of directions. I went to some academic talks and had a lot of interesting conversations that brought up ideas of hormones, gender, and responding to difficult emotions.

Trump is president, crowds are intense and London is spooky
มุมมอง 142 หลายเดือนก่อน
This week's check in is a quiet reflection on my cozy day off. London is naturally spooky this time of year, particularly at night, so this spooky season felt very genuine. I got to celebrate bonfire night after all with a nice surprise twist of fate, but then by another twist of fate, I woke up to discovering the results of the US presidential election.
The eve of Halloween

After recording this video, I went for a cycle around the city. The sun was setting, I saw foxes darting through the streets and I could smell the leaves decomposing. I saw one or two jack-o-lanterns and one impressively over the top front yard display, but otherwise the city was devoid of signs of the holiday. It hasn't taken hold here like it has in North America, but it still feels magical. ...

happy new year!
Your reaction to Ursula Le Guin where the writing style and text is just not for you is my reaction to Margaret Atwood. I understand that she's a successful, reputable author, and I've read 3 books by her, but I just did not enjoy reading them. It's neat to separate out subjective from objective reactions towards things. Being able to say that, while I don't like something, it doesn't mean it's not also actually "good".
Absolutely! Writing is art and art is subjective. Sure, some things are more broadly appealing than others, but essentially it's a very individual experience. Even if you want to critically evaluate it according to specific standards of literary theory...it's still according to those standards, and it may still resonate with people who have different priorities in what they think makes good literature. I haven't read a lot of Atwood, and I think I only read Oryx & Crake in high school so I don't have much of a memory of it. I think it's tough when you're a well known writer because suddenly there's this legend to live up to whereas if you just happened to read it without knowing the author, it might land differently because the expectations would be different. Hard to say, but there are so many authors out there -- no point in forcing yourself to appreciate something just because others do.
I really enjoyed reading encyclopedias when I was younger, which made binging on the Wikipedia a very natural transition for me :D
me too!! I had a big dictionary with gold-tipped edges that I would open randomly with my eyes closed, point to a spot on the page and start reading. It was a fun game I played with myself. It also had a name dictionary and I remember looking up that Nicole is a variant of Victoria and shares the same meaning which is 'victory of the people'. I took that meaning to heart and felt really aligned with my purpose when I started slamming and listening to poetry. It has been such a rewarding journey to question and unlearn what I'd absorbed from the culture and the cool thing is that there will always be more I can learn about it and new ways I can apply that learning. And it all started from reading the dictionary.
Whoa, that describes my favourite dictionary of my youth! An encyclopedic dictionary with a brown cover and gold tipped edges!!!
That's cool about your name!, and huzzah for continual learning and unlearning. That dictionary that I grew up with made everything feel knowable, though that feels a little naive now.
It might have been the same one!
proud of you duude! take care and do what you love, everything will get better overtime!!

So true! What are some words left unspoken that you wish you had've said?
@@thatnikkiyouknow you asking/inviting me to write a song with you. Not necessarily only words but situations too, unacted actions also apply.
@@drmenopresident collaborations can be fun! Very true that inaction can be every bit as painful as holding back your words. Every day, I'm trying to get better at communicating my thoughts and feelings as I have them and letting people in. I also try to take action more. I often get stuck in my head, overanalyzing and overthinking. Of course it's good to think things through, but at some point, action must be taken!
Brava! Bravo! Great mix of music and images
Gracias! It was so cool watching the sun rise from the plane!
cozy sounds & cozy times :)
Definitely! Wearing a blanket all day was a good call for this video. Very comfortable. The bath scene was a lot less comfortable though. 😂
