3 Tips for the Snare part to Scheherazade!
🔥3 Tips for the Snare Drum part to Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade! 🥁
Tip #1 Mvt 3 Letter D: Phrase either away from the downbeat or to beat 4 to setup the right feel and character for the clarinet. The tendency is to bring out the release to the 6s killing the groove.
Tip #2 Mvt 3 Letter F: Make the downbeat grace notes after the 16ths short to keep the rhythm clear and to not be late to the downbeats. You can keep them all wide except that one, but I like to keep them all consistent.
Tip #3 Mvt 4 Letter Q: Stay in the same general playing area and use stick heights to get the crescendo. Moving too much on the drum causes excessive timbre changes and doesn’t get the desired effect. Work on downstrokes and staying relaxed in the hands.

@@MattHowardPercAcademy Nice. I’ve been using the concert twos from promark but I’m going to snag a pair of these. I’m working up On Freedom’s Ground, and I feel like those would work well on that excerpt. Tying the rolls to the first flams are destroying any confidence I’ve ever had lol!
I appreciate the last tip, but auditions may want it at 132. At that point, still try to make it groove and hold on for dear life lol
The parts and scores I’ve seen for this have this at either 116-126. In my experience, faster tempos don’t impress the panel. The easiest way to sound nervous and miss a bunch of notes is to play this one too fast! I end up shoot for 120 adjusting for it to be faster when I’m all nervous. I do work this one up to playing this 5x without missing a note at 152 just in case. Best of luck!

I do play doubles. I’m able to get a more legato sound and stay loose more so than muscling out singles.
