Being Future Ready in the Noisy Now with Bob Johansen and Scott James
Futurist Bob Johansen (iftf.org) and community organizer Scott James (preparedneighborhoods.com) discuss “Being Future Ready in the Noisy Now” in this 55 minute interactive conversation at Eagle Harbor Bookstore on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
Bob represents the voice of the “future back” while Scott represents the voice of the “future ready”. The first two minutes explain the reason for the filming: it is part of a free kit we’re creating to help other towns replicate my nonprofit (bainbridgeprepares.org). You can fast forward to minute 1:53 if you like.
You'll hear many references to us living on Bainbridge Island that are still directly applicable to those not living on an island. Consider how your area of the city you live in will become an “island” after a regional disaster (e.g. flooding, hurricane, earthquake). The organizational model behind Bainbridge Prepares (bainbridgeprepares.org) can scale up or down to adapt for the type of regional natural disasters you face, as well as match the size town you live in.

I live in Santa Monica California (Los Angeles County) used to live in San Francisco. We felt it as it knocked down Santa Monica Blvd awful traffic for months. My house is new and built to current earthquake codes for California and the office I work in has been retrofitted to current California earthquake codes. I have a storm shelter with a month’s worth of food and supplies in the case of an actual earthquake emergency. I forgot to add the biggest earthquake I was in: Loma Prieta in San Francisco October 17th 1989. I was at the A’s-Giants World Series game! 15 seconds of pure adrenaline and fear! I’m glad I wasn’t on the Bay Bridge and especially not on the Cypress Expressway! P-WAVE-Primary wave S-WAVE-Secondary wave P-equals first JOLT S-equals Major Shaking!

Cascadia is a terror on the coast but we have active faults inside of Puget Sound that are 1/2 to 1/8 as active. They go off every few thousand years roughly. They could generate a 7.5 or so and are capable of several meters of uplift or drop. Locate it on the shore, inside of admiralty sill at the right tide and you have 10 meter sunamis bouncing around for 6 hours. South Whidbey is one we are aware of and there are many we are not aware of. We are living in an area with no history. Pre-historic in the puget sound? Anything before 1700. We don't know and we have not studied. We do know that in this region the plates are destroyed by continental drift. We are nowhere near a craton.

I have a few questions and thoughts if you have time... What do you think of masks with exhalation valves? I'm not sure I care for them since a valve cannot magically close, instantaneously. One would have to believe a few particles could slip through each time you inhale(?). Also what are your thoughts on wearing eye-protection with this new super-strain entering the battlefield? Do you think air-tight anti-fog goggles will be essential? I have a health condition so I'm concerned, but luckily I only have to go out occasionally for food or pharmacy. For short durations, such as shopping, the safest looking solutions I've found so far are; rubber gasket respirators, Redimask, and modified full-faced snorkel masks. Recommendations? Questions for me? I appreciate you guys! Take care. -Mark

Valves are only suitable in industrial setting where particulates are relatively large. Valves are not recommended.
