Sweet Old Bertha
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 มี.ค. 2022
Bertha is my 2012 Toyota Prius camper. I lived in a 21 foot travel trailer for most of 2021. When my camper was unexpectedly destroyed, I decides to minimize even further. I sold my truck and converted my Bertha to a camper so I can continue nomadic living, hopefully with less hassle and expense than with the travel trailer.
Bertha has a lift kit, 2000w inverter, bed, toilet, running water, and black out shades for stealth camping.

Prius Camping/Living: Climate/Temperature control & Power Management with Renogy 2000w inverter
มุมมอง 11Kปีที่แล้ว
Video showing my inverter set-up and how I manage temperature/climate control. I use power via my Renogy inverter when camping without hook-ups (sometimes leaving my car in ready mode, other times turning the car off and running off the 12v), and a power cord when I'm camping at a campground or other place with an outlet available. Definitely don't recommend the 2000w inverter I have, unless yo...
Close Call with Wrong Way Driver on I-40

Just a short dashcam clip showing a close call I had on the highway (i-40 westbound) with a wrong way driver. I called 911 but wasn’t able to get through. Maybe other drivers were trying to call it in as well? I’m not sure if the driver ended up hitting anyone. I also submitted the video to the local police who didn’t ever respond. Definitely grateful I wasn’t distracted by my phone or anything...

My Prius Camper toilet (Go Anywhere Portable Toilet adapted for car camping)

Short video showing my toilet set up. Bought on amazon and cut off the legs so I could let it rest on my bed platform frame (after removing back seats). Below are links to the toilet itself as well as well as the bags and powder I'm currently using. Though I am considering switching to composting bags at some point. Please feel free to ask any questions and let me know if you’d like to see more...
why a plug in heater when the car has its own heater? does it use a lot less electricity?
It’s more efficient so the engine isn’t turning on and off all night. Also makes a difference to have the heat source near the bed at night.
Nice video, are you open to idea??
Certainly open to new ideas though I’m not currently living in my car
@@sweetoldbertha How to connect
Why not just recharge a power station from a DC charge cord in the cigarette lighter plug in the Prius rather than bother with connecting an inverter? Wouldn’t a quality power station provide plenty of power for camp cooking and whatever, making an inverter unnecessary?
It would take awhile to charge from a cigarette lighter plug. Using the inverter provides on demand power and uses the car as a generator when left in ready mode. I'm sure there are instances where a power station might work better for some people (like if someone does a lot of tent camping away from the car), but for me, this was the best option.
@@sweetoldbertha ok, I can definitely see the convenience of that. I guess the combo of both creates more options. Right now I’m preparing to lose my home and looking for the simplest setup. I’m somewhat handy, but very cautious with electrical work. I wouldn’t want to get any of the wiring wrong (from what I’ve seen on other channels) and paying for it to be done might be pricey. Maybe I’ll ask around about wiring costs to find the best starting point.
@@ericbishton2779I'm going to use a power station when I camp because I already have one. It rarely hurts to start with what you already have.
@@ericbishton2779 I’m sorry to hear that. Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions. For me, this was the best solution. However the 2000 watt inverter is more than I need and was also more expensive that the less powerful options.
If Prius with climate control made a large suv or van it would be perfect for camping all weather.
You can use the sun visors to help keep your windshield cover in place.
I applaud your build. Trying to figure if I can rationalize getting a cheap second gen as a mini rv because the weather has been too hot and or humid for me to enjoy tent camping most of the time.
The second gen cars last forever. I don't know if I could ever do tent camping in hot weather after being spoiled by the Prius lol
@@sweetoldbertha So I’ve heard! My only concern is the engine startup and high speed fan noise being a nuisance to other campers.
What ru talking about? You did a great job !!
Thank you 😊
Wow, wtf?
The trick is to get the tints at a place that also does inspections. That’s what I did. Plus back windows can be any tint % in every state.
Oh that’s good to know! The state where the car is registered allows for an inspection exemption if I can prove I’m out of state. So I haven’t actually had to get an inspection yet on this car.
The inverter may be emitting a lot of emf, which can cause forgetfulness and kill brain cells. Stainless steel cover or reflectix can prevent emf from traveling to your bed area. An Emf detector can help you check if there are any leakage. Usually when the inverter is on.
Very interesting! Thanks for the info. I will have to look into this. Definitely need all the brain cells I have left lol
Prius in general and all hybrids cause brown fog and killing of brain cells, a lot of people report headaches
One of the best sedan setup on internet
My Prius prime couldn't handle that much!
Bet I spend a lot more on gas though 😆
Great video! I love how you take the time to take us through your thought process, especially the mistakes you made, very valuable to hear.
So glad you found it helpful!
My friend and I love your buildout. Great job! 👏

Thanks so much!
Fabulous! What are the dimensions of the toilet without the legs as you have adapted?
18.75 inches; width: 14 inches; height: 4.75 inches
It’s all nice and everything until you learn ur hybrid needs to breath and ur covering everything up !! All those vents need to breath
All vents are left uncovered, since that is the logical thing to do.

@@worldwideepisode Are you living in the car?
Yeah, Travel Nurse! Wish I had done this when I was working! Much better than being supplied with housing that had ROACHES so bad they would fall on my head out of the suspended ceiling. (2005 New Jersey)
Yeah temporary housing can be tough. Didn’t ever have any problems with roaches in the places I rented but so many places rentals were sooooo much worse in person than they appeared online.
I know your pain... 🌩
So crazy you caught yours on video! May your Prius also RIP
Hows ur hybrid and 12v battery holding up after a year? Jus curious
The car had over 200k miles on it when I bought it, and I tested the hybrid battery when I bought it, and it didn't have much life left in it. So I did end up replacing the hybrid battery last summer. As for the 12V, it was an off brand replacement (no idea how long it'd been installed), but I replaced it a couple months ago.
I made my own coverings with reflectix. Since trying to find just the right blackout fabric is challenging and also expensive, I purchased a couple blackout curtains from Walmart. (I used the Eclipse brand without the grommets.) I cut them about 1-1 1/2” bigger all around my reflectix and cut slits to help them fit the windows better. The slits and notches (where needed) prevent the fabric from bunching up too much, gives a little bit of overlap and provides something to pull on to take them out of the window.
That sounds great! I think one of the main benefits over the weathertech would be that it would be matte instead of shiny. So would look more like just darkly tinted windows
@@sweetoldbertha you have to use the curtains that look almost like a linen fabric instead of the satin. I have a light tint on my windows already, so it still looks like a super dark tint.
I love your set up. I have a 2017 Prius trying to get different ideas. Can the back seats be reinstalled? Did you install the inverter yourself? I don’t know where to find someone knowledgeable to do that for me. I was told my battery (2017) is not in the trunk area. Hope you’re well. Thanks 😊
Thank you so much! Yes the seats can be reinstalled. An electrician or car stereo place could install the inverter. It’s fairly simple to install. Hope this helps!
such a great set up, thanks for sharing it with me. I like how you’ve got the toilet set up in there, I think that’s what I’d like to do too :)
You are so welcome!
Just bought the weather tech for my 2020. I’ll let you know if they improved.
Where do you connect 2000w inverter? 12v car battery directly?
Yes, it connects directly to the 12v battery. Hope this helps 😊
Hey, how do you drink tea in your car? Do you have like a kettle or do you just ask for hot water from places?
I use this kettle though it does require power from my inverter. Hope this helps! amzn.to/3uzCEJS
I went through your item list in the description, I was looking for a simple way to cook! The starter gizmo👍 The window screens👍 I saved a lot of your links for future reference - Thanks for sharing 🥰
Your placement of the toilet is incredibly natural 👍 I'm in the process of building mine out & gotta incorporate your feature. I've got the back seat out but use the whole width as a bed, spoiled. I might split & hinge the platform just as the seats once opened to reveal a most convenient & private place to role along with nature's call. Thanks for sharing the place!
That’s a brilliant idea, splitting the bed to make an area for a toilet below. Sounds like you’ll have the best of both worlds 😊
I've got lots of appreciation for your sharing & others sharing on YT with their designs. I'm looking to make it in my own way too, but not before considering how others have made themselves comfortable, Thanks! 🥰 @@sweetoldbertha
Super video. Thank you for showing what is possible.
I have a sun screen protector I bought from Toyota that actually fits the Prius very nicely. However I do lower my son visors all the time to hold it in place. But it folds up quite nicely and when I’m not using it it either sits on my backseat or underneath my driver seat. Love your video. Is your refrigerator does it have a regular plug or does it plug into like a cigarette lighter I liked it your hot water maker must have a regular plug. Thank you thank you for your contact.
Thanks so much! The fridge actually came with both plugs. But I use the regular one, plugged directly into the inverter. Hope this helps 😊
Great video and setup! Earned a sub 🙏
Awesome, thank you!
I’m curious about your remote in the back of the car to help start your car if you need that extra power. Because I know in my Prius I have to press the break in order to start the car. How do you handle that from the back?
It’s just a remote start system (meant to be used outside the car), but it can be used inside the car to start the car. So pressing the brake isn’t necessary.
That's an impressive setup! Thanks for the tour. Writing item locations is a clever strategy!
Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful!

Yes, it is specific to each mifi unit and can be found under settings.
what kind of tires do you have on your prius?✌🏼
Can't remember what I had on the car when I made this video but now have Michelin Defender T+H all weather tires on my car. Good deal from Costco lol.
My cousin was killed by a wrong way driver on I-40 just outside of Winslow, AZ.
I'm so sorry for your loss
I got the weather tech for my Prius V and so far am liking them.
I use the same toilet in my Prius as well - works well.
Such a game changer, right?
Blunt .... I always need a " pee" place. Where would one pee?
5:40 shows my toilet set up
Hi I am impressed with you ingenuity. Where did you get the brackets you used for support of bed and toilet wood?
Thanks so much! I actually just found the brackets in my dad's storage shed lol. I'm not sure of it's original intended use but I'm guessing a hardware store could help with that.
It's amazing that all your set up is actually set up and ready to be accessed and used in your Prius! One observation was that your plastic water jug next to wheelwell was very close to your inverter switch. If jug accidentally jostled that switch to an off or on position, could that cause a problem?
Thanks! I guess it could be bad if I had perishables in my fridge (didn’t have the fridge when I made this video). I actually moved the switch closer to the front of the car (close to the coffee maker). You can see it in my newer videos. I never had trouble with turning it on or off by accident in either location though.
With this setup, what is the demnision of the bed ?
The bed is 25"x70". I am 5'2" so it's good for me. It could be several inches longer if I'd push forward the passenger seat.
I really like your sink! Can I ask your advice, please? I'm planning a scion tC setup, so similar available space. She has a "sink". Would you consider this (around 13min mark) TH-cam title "Her Van is the BEST No Build Minivan Camper Van Creation I’ve Seen" It can stand up vertically at like 13"x13x4" when not in use. Unlike her permanent setup. I haven't bought the container yet, since maybe I'd need the space, and your plastic container fits great in a car. What do you think? :) Thank you and safe travels!
