This channel has been set up to provide help and support for people studying at Newcastle Aviation Academy.
It is mainly concerned with the UK BTEC level 3 syllabus for Unit 72 Aircraft Maintenance practices, Unit 66 Theory of Flight and Unit 82 Airframe systems.
Some content related to other Units such as 83 Gas turbine engines may appear also.

After trying to get this video down to 20 minutes I managed to stop myself talking after 49 ha ha. The video is here to support the stability and control part of unit48 for the level 3 BTEC. Hopefully students who do not have a background knowledge of aircraft types will be able to pick up on anything they find interesting about this video and we can explore more in class. Everything I said here was of the top of my head in one take and from memory so feel free to fact check everything if you disagree. Please remember this is aimed at level 3 learners so some of it is "Steves easy version" and may not be the full story. Lots of really interesting designs had to be missed out such as the Hawk, Harrier, Jaguar, Vulcan, Victor TSR2, Buccaneer and F35 for time constraints. Wanted to listen so much but the audio is horrific.
I have studied fluid dynamics at several of the UK's most 'prestigious' Universities. Never have I had such a useful explanation of shockwave formation. The *qualitative but consistent* way you describe this is essential before the differential analysis can be understood. Congratulations.

I love the attention to details that you have and the understanding the we are students who nede to imagine and understand every bit. I wish you were my instructor! THANK YOU! Just one question. Does this mean that mechanically, the balance and the trim tabs are the same physical piece?
On some aircraft you can mix the inputs of the balance tabs to adjust them for trim purposes. On others they are mechanically separate especially in less complex aircraft.

My thinking is if we could mitigate the disadvantage on the stealth by maybe at least minimum of less than 30 percent and have canard like the chinese and amplify fighting capability by more than 30 is that a good enough trade off to have canards?
The chinese J10 basically copied the Eurofighter/Rafale design and added a divertless intake but the fact its got a huge fin area leads me to believe its fly by wire avionics is not as advanced. Canards and stealth are doing very different jobs. Canards versus thrust vectoring is more useful to compare.

Since then I have had my head in the books again and learned about a slight increase in the drag moment of the tailplane being included in some designs deliberately to damp out phugoids

Do not know why I have written (all flying tail) next to delta wing. It was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away and I was very tired
The acoustics become coupled with shocks, chicken and the egg type scenario, is the acoustics moving the shock, or is the shock altering the acoustics?
Interesting point, for aircraft design we are more interested in the effect shockwaves have on lift and drag or aircraft balance so acoustics is not something I have studied.

Hi Orange, priorities have shifted for us recently to calculate grades in time for a revised end of course policy. there will be no more content this week but as part of a continued teaching package I will definitely be doing something along those lines. Can I take it your merit is basically "define the speed of sound and why is a mach meter used" and your distinctions are "sweepback, area rule and supercritical wings then engine intake design".

Nice video, Steve. Quick question, are slats and leading edge extenders the same thing?
Hi Lewis, there are various terms used for leading edge devices. One such device is a leading edge cuff which extends out of the leading edge as an extension of the wing. Slats, slots and slotted slats all increase the camber of the overall wing to increase efficiency at high angles of attack

Kyle H asked if you have to actually draw sketches and upload them for assignments or just add an image form google. The answer is simple. If you use "A base image" from google or bing and then add your own arrows and text then that is your own work and is ok to submit. An example of this would be an open source photo of aeroplane flaps that you add your own arrow to showing airflow. You cannot and must not just use full explanation images such as a diagram from the NASA website answering the question for you. Use common sense, produce your own work. If you want to sketch on a piece of paper and upload a photo of the sketch to your assignment document then that is fine but an electronic image produced using Microsoft paint for example is well within you capabilities and what is expected at this level of study.
