Presidents Day Sail
Presidents Day sail. A nice westerly filled in around 1330 so we sailed out the Gate and then flew the spinnaker back down the Bay against a massive ebb. Beautiful day!

We left the dock at 0730 and arrived at KMC at 1430. Motor sailed to just off Kailua beach and the sailed the rest of the way. Winds 15-23 kts, waves 5-10’. Good fun!

2022 OYRA Duxship ocean race aboard the J120 Hokulani. Decent breeze at the start got us out the Gate but near Pt. Bonita the wind died. Tight reached north with the A3 on what little breeze we had until it petered out completely. We all parked for a bit until the sea breeze finally filled and then it was wind on for the rest of the day.

We had winds from 7-10 kts on the way out in very lumpy seas, and then saw a building sea breeze from 12-20 kts on the return. A great day out on the ocean!

    I don't know if you are still monitoring this site, but, if you are, how close to the true wind will the A3 or A5 get you. I know that, according to J Boats, the Code 0 will sail about 70 degrees off the true wind, resulting in a 35 degree apparent wind. Do the odd numbered A sails do about the same, or better? I've enjoyed your videos for years, and hope that you might start putting some together on the OPB's that you are sailing, until you get another boat, yourself. Thanks.

    • @tracyrogers9083
      @tracyrogers9083 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends a bit on how much wind you are talking about, but in general a Code0 will get closer to the wind than a reaching spinnaker (A3 or A5). The reaching spinnakers will generally have a higher end wind range than the Code0, and the Code0 will generally function better in very light wind. My brain works in apparent wind angles, since that's what you actually "see" - I'd say that most Code0's operate in the 50-90 AWA, and reaching spinnakers 80-130 AWA.

    I notice on your boat and a couple of others what looks like a plastic tube just after of the stanchion base turning blocks. What is it for? Also, at what TWS do you need to reef the main when hard on the wind? And, some J120's have tracks on the rails and others don't seem to. If you were broad reaching with the jib, would you use that track? Thanks for the videos.

    • @tracyrogers9083
      @tracyrogers9083 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "tube" is place to secure your foot when grinding the winch. Depending on what head sail you have up, generally looking to reef the main in high teens TWS. Earlier J120s did not have the tracks on the rails, I believe it was standard on the new models. Yes, we use the forward track for outside jib leads when reaching, and the aft track is for tweeners for the spinnaker/code 0 sheets.

    • @tracyrogers9083

      The rudder and cassette were made by Competition Composites Inc. in Ontario, Canada. Super easy to work with. The metal components I had fabricated by the metal shop of a local yard. The rudder and cassette are pretty "standard", what's custom is how to attach everything to the transom.

    On the spinnaker run, since you jibed 3 times, I assume that you were sailing at pretty deep angles. If you were making 12+ kts with the A-4, how much difference in speed would flying the A-2 have made?

    • @tracyrogers9083
      @tracyrogers9083 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely would have added a few knots, but at 165 square meters it's a lot of sail to handle singlehanded. Frankly the class size A2 is too big in anything other then light winds (<15kts) with crew. Our A4 is 133SM and seems perfectly sized for the full range of wind speeds and is more easily handled with limited or no crew.

    • @ericwest4069
      @ericwest4069 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heading down wind, and doing 12-15 kts., what was the wind speed, and at what point would you have to either reef or switch to the A-4?

    • @tracyrogers9083
      @tracyrogers9083 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I recall, winds were in the low to mid-20's. As the winds were pretty steady and the sea state pretty mild we were comfortable with our setup. We were also sailing pretty safe angles (145-155 AWA) to avoid spinnaker collapses or round ups. If the wind had been less consistent with significant gusts and/or we had a more confused sea state to make holding course more difficult, we would likely have gone with a smaller spinnaker first, then if needed reefed the main.

    Just watched your vid, was considering upgrading from my S2 7.9 to a J92... wondered how good the boat did solo sailing, so your vid was encouraging... Question for you, are you using a tiller tamer, or a brake, or is there enough "stick" to the tiller that is sets for you pretty easily. I realize its pretty light air for most of this, but most times it looks like you just let go, and it stays.. figure you gotta have a tamer or something on it.

    • @tracyrogers9083
      @tracyrogers9083 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      When it's light up wind there's enough friction in the ruder bearings that it will stay put. Not so as the wind increases. I have a tiller pilot that you can see attached to the tiller in the down wind sequences. Older Autohelm 2000. If I were to get a new one I'd get the Raymarine X5.
