    Hi Nichole. I just did the exact same test with my French Ultramarines. I was wondering if your DS French Ultramarine was mislabeled at the factory and it's their regular Ultramarine. Because mine is very saturated and leans more violet than my Winser and Newton French Ultramarine. And my W&N is my all time favorite in French Ultramarine because once its dried, it just appears brighter, cleaner and less dull. You know how that dull appearance happens when some pigments totally dry? A reason why I adore Cobalt Blue. I love my MGraham Ultramarine too because it doesn't lose as much of it's vibrancy either and sometimes you just need a more non granulating Ultramarine. I don't like granular flower petals or on baby's skin. I painted realistic infant portraits for several years. Now retired from that. PS, my Holbein French Ultramarine is the most violet and most granulating of all. My Schmincke French Ultramarine runner up. Still the most vibrant to me after all is dried is my W&N. Sooo beautiful !

    As a new artist, I am confuse about everything you are saying. But it’s probably because I don’t really listen to most artists because they say these things but they don’t explain the reasons like you are. At the same time other artists do a lot more things. So now that I am paying attention which gets me confuse. Thank you for this video .

    When you paint on hot press you have to adapt your painting style, including how much water and paint you use. Cold press methods don't work very well on hot press, which is likely why you had trouble - a lot of the work that cold press kind of does for you is a more manual job on hot press. Most complaints I've seen about hot press come from people using cold press methods on it, which means you often get work you're unhappy with as you feel the paper was 'bad'.

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually agree with a lot of what you said, but this paper, at least the one I received, it's so fuzzy and it peels up when you even run your hands across the surface. I enjoy using fabriano and Strathmore hot press but this one gave me so much trouble, especially with colored pencils. But of course, that's not what the paper is meant for.

    Hi, i just started watercolour painting for about a year. I use Winsor and Newton Cotman when i first started, then i switched to Daniel Smith (which i love). I paint florals and after watching your vidoes on Mijello watercolours, i plan to buy them. I did some price comparison and found Mijello very affordable, compared to Daniel Smith. Do these Mijello pure pigment colours work well with florals? Thank you.

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there 👋 Excellent question. Yes I think they would be great for floral paintings but I do advise that you practice with them first before jumping right in on a full painting. Only because these watercolors are extremely pigmented, more so than Daniel Smith, and they have very vibrant colors. If you like to work in more pastel tones and light florals, you may find it a bit challenging to control the pigment load at first. Just remember to use a light touch and they will last you practically forever. Good luck 😊

    Not a beginners set for the reasons stated but I have to chime in to say that I’ve never seen another artist’s palette so closely match my own intuitive love for golden hour/evening colors as Jean Haines Master Artist Set. If an artist is able to control their values to allow for enough light in their painting this set is magical. (Substituting Quin pink for Opera pink)

    I haven't had any wax bloom issues with what few Lightfast pencils I have, but I use mine with my Lumis since I have more of those and find the range of values the Lumis to be a bit better than the Lightfast. Either set seems to compliment each other well. I have also used them with my Polychromos pencils too without any issue since Polys are a lot brighter than the Lightfast pencils. Wax bloom is a weird topic for me because it really bothers some people but I find it doesn't particularly bother me. It can always be removed with a layer of blender pencil or a wipe from a tissue. Perhaps this isn't such an issue to me because I've been more of a colorist than an artist the last few years. I think it's probably because of that, but even when I was an artist I don't remember it bothering me. Either way, nice review, I like that you were honest about everything you had issues with here because a lot of artists just like something and will just rave about it instead of properly listing the cons

I especially loved to see the flow comparison demo vs qor and daniel smith, because i actually own some qors and find how 'flowy' they are a bit hard to work with when trying to paint very detailed areas with controlled gradations. For me, having less flow without my direct intervention (ie dragging my brush to gently feather out an edge) is very appealing :) . I think i may take the plunge with mijello after all.

If you want to get in for a low investment just to try acrylics, I recommend value sets or sample sets ( other brands like golden or liquitex, as MGraham doesn't really have sample sets. ) And try to use coupons or sales where you can. Also, the Winsor Newton galleria acrylics are a great way to try acrylics affordable, they are student grade but reliable quality, and I think a step above the rest in student quality.

Derwent Lightfast and Caran D' ache may appear more muted, ( although I would call it 'more natural') but both brands give insight of the pigments they've used. Just saw this looking for a brand to buy. Thank you for always staying real and telling the truth. With everyone getting sponsors or getting kickbacks it's hard for artists to decide. What's the truth and whats an infomercial is often lost.

      Thank you so much for this comment. Sometimes I feel pressured by people in the comments to only say nice things because it's either what they are used to with other TH-camrs, or it personally offends them if I don't like their favorite products( or I'm honest and say it's not perfect.) I don't want to do hype videos just singing the praises of every art material that I try. TH-cam has become so commercial and corrupt but I feel that we, the artists, have a responsibility to keep the highest level of quality and standards for our art materials, and not just blow smoke up companies butts because they might throw you a little coin. I'm not going to sit here and say that every product that crosses my desk has fallen from the sky and you NEED to run out and buy it. I'm just not going to do it. I'd rather leave TH-cam than make videos like that.

      @@nicolemartinart5819The world in general acts like they have their head in sand. Don't let it bring you down people often want their truth not the truth. Stay the course eventually when all their products don't work right and they realize they were fed marketing and sadly lies. They will then come to someone like you who didn't sell out. You're helping people remember that.Thank you again for all your work and integrity.

    Yeah seems like there’s not a high enough pigment load for a ‘professional’ range, and they try to hide it with brighteners which is so not cool. I’m glad I tried a better brand first, it blew my mind first time I used the good stuff.

      I really enjoy the formula but yes, I agree that the pigment strength is very middle of the road. More than students grade but not as much as most artists grade. I'm doing a video in just a bit on the comparison between these and galleria, as well as showing my artwork I produced with these paints.

      How's the lightfastness on their gouache? My store just got in the sets and I've been curious to try them

    I realize this video was made quite awhile ago, but... I really appreciate your comments on the individual paints before they were applied onto the paper, as to how they re-wet and their appearance on the palette. That's not something we normally get to see or hear in color comparison videos, and it really affected my decision in which one I'd like to buy and try. Many thanks! 🙏☺️

    You are not a vegan. There is no such thing as a vegan. If you use electricity, internet, water, wear clothing, use transportation, use soap, etc you are not a vegan.

      sir, I never claimed to be vegan. in fact, I love beef! but I also respect other people's beliefs which are not my own, and whether or not I agree with them, I want to be kind and respectful. I know that I have some Vegan subscribers and I wanted them to have that information so they could make the right buying choice for themselves, that's all. no need to be upset, and I wish you a wonderful day :)
