We package every order with care and attention, including our Practice Backstrap Loom Kits! This kit includes everything you need to get weaving on a traditional Maya backstrap loom prepared by our partner weavers at Lake Atitlán. The warp has been carefully dyed with natural dyes using the dye-reisit "ikat" (or "jaspe" in Spanish) technique, and the weft is naturally-dyed indigo. All in cotton...
Faja weave demonstration by Irma

What a technique! Big thanks to Irma for sharing with us during a recent Textile Travel itinerary. She was so concentrated! It's not so often that we get to observe the warp-faced weave used for creating "fajas" or sashes here in Guatemala. This was a big treat for advanced weavers of the trip to be able to see up-close. I loved spending my time in Guatemala with Everilda. She is fabulous and a wonderful weaver and teacher
That is lovely to hear :) We're so glad you enjoyed weaving with Doña Everilda. Please do come back for a visit when you can!
Que pecioso!!! Y el color es tan hermoso.
I love your art! ❤ simply beautiful!!! If you don’t mind me asking, where can I buy a loom like that? I would love to have one and learn what you do?
We sell looms ready for weavers on our website! You can find them here: kakawdesigns.com/collections/kits-and-materials
I love the trick to keep the woven textile the same width. So many times I see examples where it starts out wide, but then gets skinnier, and it’s always irritated me. You’re the first person I’ve ever seen use a method to prevent that, and I think it’s awesome. Your piece doesn’t look all that long, but I don’t see extra thread at the top, I’m just wondering what you would use it for. Pretty colours though, very nice! 😍
Yes, the temple is really helpful in keeping the width consistent, especially for beginners. Also when getting into brocade, because the added tension can me it more challenging. This shorter version is what we've called a "Practice Loom" and we think it makes a great wall hanging when finished :) It's an easy loom to get started with.
@@kakawdesigns Good to know, thank you!
@@pennycandyys Con mucho gusto!
Yes, this is a backstrap loom in the traditional Maya Kaqchikel style from Guatemala.
Algun dia quizas pueda participar.
Te esperamos con mucho gusto!

How do they keep the threads spaced so evenly without using a reed?
Good question! Doña Margarita actually has a "cane" on the underside of her loom. You can see the nails sticking out on the sides that keep that temple there to keep the width constant. The other end of the warp has also been woven a little bit, and that helps a lot to keep the warp from moving. Does that help answer your question?
@@kakawdesigns oh yes, I see it! I think that answers part of my question...so, to keep the threads from moving toward a warp-faced weave as the piece progresses is more a matter of patience and attention?
@@Earthwise.Well, the width shouldn't change if you keep the temple there to control it. And the warp threads shouldn't move so much becuase they've been woven on the other end also, so there's not too much wiggle room. And then after that, yes, attention and lots of patience :) Separating individual threads row by row as necessary.
gret explntion now i finally understnd it 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Glad to hear that it was helpful! Happy weaving!

Where is this?
Antigua Guatemala! Or do you mean the exact street?
@@kakawdesignsnaw just wanted to know the country. Beautiful bro
Wow! Cuántos hilos urden y cuánto tiempo se tardan? Saludos 💙
Hola Ana!
Ta. Helpful.
Glad to hear it!

What was that PA announcement at the end?
Hi! Not sure what you are referring to... probably a TH-cam ad?
@@kakawdesigns It was background noise at the end of the video
@@ksisu1324 Ha! I understand now. It's out in the street, village life in Guatemala can be noisy!
Great video! I often have these mistakes.
Glad to hear that the video is helpful!
Hi, good show.
Glad to hear it
Great video! The hardest part - for me - is getting a great shed like yours 😢
Is it harder with the chocoy or the shed rod?
Wow! Hermosos los pompones. Qué hacen con los sobrantes? Saludos 💙
Buena pregunta!
Saludos y Bendiciones 💙
Muy bonito! Gracias por mostrar lo que hacen . Saludos 💙
fantastic made dress!
It is a beautiful huipil/güipil! :) Doña Lidia really is such a talented weaver.
