    Love the 10% tithe idea, but Parfit said, “we should NOT eat meat” and called for not having children. Didn’t know he was early EA, which has shifted with EA maximalists now saying we need many babies. Good debate. Was having trouble finding any true debate on this topic. Wish that the pro-meat side actually believed their case, but it was good that they were debate students, and so probably made a decent representative case of the other side. Hopefully I can find another debate like this to validate I got all the points from both sides.

    we need a global well-being index to insure values are implemented systemically; we are a dual-process species with a dual-process brain. our societies are constructed along a single process mechanism: gdp. gdp paired to a well-being index will mirror the dual-process nature of human interaction and response to each other and nature. the gdp represents the intuitive system1 process of instant action and insight, including rapid economic growth and stock market intuitiveness. the well-being index represents the system2 of working out problems using reason based on guideline values. we need to establish a global well-being index to serve as this reasonable balance to gdp growth. with a well-being index established, to which we may aspire competitvely to meet, gdp can do what it wants in terms of growth. this is similar to global goals, but different, as it’s a variable measure, like a thermometer measurement, based on public health, which in turn must be based on individual health. it’s a roots-up index. by maintaining the well-being index at a healthy temperature, we may maintain the means of universally sustaining the species in its natural context, but the interactive footing will be more intuitive, more in response to needs of the moment. this self-correcting index is essential as a macro-step in establishing a helpful system of gdp management. a well-being index to mitigate against gdp excesses, such as inequity, pollution, racism, disease, and poverty.

    If we are a logical product of the universal mechanism left to run itself for a billion years, then the shifting "up" of the collective system of intelligence to machine assisted integration of society is probability one. Only the rate of progress is variable. Alignment of values is the intelligent process isn't it? Mutally assured survival was/is the reason for WHO, but so far, it's not been full spectrum. AI can be applied more effectively to an apolitical rationale such as assessing proportionate responsibility for mutual protection of life. Acceptance of the the operating principle of the Big Bang theory is to know that the interconnectivity of "computed" information is ultimately coherent, so logically, to integrate collectively is necessary to think for yourself inclusivly.

    On the subject of TOE's, Tegmark defines a TOE as a "complete description of reality." He also suggested that physical existence is mathematical existence. Later, I believe he modified that to restrict only to computable mathematical existence. There are countably many descriptions in English. If real numbers exist mathematically, then there is an uncountable number of things which exist physically. Therefore, we won't have a situation where a description will be complete. However, while not every real number (something which exists mathematically) is describable by this counting argument, we do have ways to describe the set of real numbers.

    I'm not convinced that taking an extremely high paying job and then donating a large portion of the income to charities is a moral practice. The problem with this practice is that too many slippery slopes are involved. 1) How can we be sure that the high income is earned by an ethical way through the company, and if we can't be sure, then we are just redistributing wealth by our own prejudice. 2) High donation from any one party can cause a charity to play favoritism and become politicized. Then, we have to ask ourselves: Is either of these two scenarios moral and ethical?

    I very much like the focus on reducing suffering rather than increasing happiness. But I didn't understand some points, like, why does he think that we are the only sentient beings in the universe (there are good arguments that it is hugely likely that there are other civilizations) and that this matters so crucially - as if there is a moral obligation to keep humanity (or future humanity) existing forever, while it is clear that sooner or later humanity will go extinct, and in the end all complexity (incl. life) in the universe will be gone..

    • @aconcretemoth9382
      @aconcretemoth9382 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      he's spent a lot of a career thinking about "population ethics" and future possible outcomes for mankind and their ethical weight... since there's a great span of time in the future even for earth's viability--maybe a billion years until the sun explodes--then climate change or a nuclear apocalypse might prevent the goodness of a billion year's worth of people existing in lives worth living, which is an unfathomable number of people. it's not a moral obligation to keep humanity going per se, but to future people in his view.

      give the guy a break would ya, he's got no social interest whatsoever. How you define "discussion" can be terribly misunderstood, of course self-appointed "experts" don't care about anyone else's opinion because they've already made their minds, which is why they always get it wrong: only the future can, and *invariably will*, surprise them. Nevertheless there IS a role for artists to play and it is what it has *always* been. Prepare the collective unconscious for the changes ahead. In this sense, discussion *with the public* is, indeed, needed. In fact, I'm looking for sci-fi authors, amateurs or otherwise, to write about these things, reply to this or send me a message here on youtube. Btw, "discussion" about "the singularity" is nonsense, whomever from it comes, anyways. There is a lot more important things to "discuss" about before the "endgame" (well, "the game" I'd guess :))

    • @jeffreycliff922
      @jeffreycliff922 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I was just pointing out that that particular statement is a pretty loaded term with a huge backstory in the group of people who have been thinking about this issue and particular on a systematic-ish level. I'm not sure if Tegmark is aware of that or not. That said while I would certainly consider myself an amateur, I *would* like to write something that touches on this, maybe even for nanowrimo this year. I'm still looking at a way to frame it but am about 20000/50000 words in as is. I've been thinking about it for a long time, and am kind of hoping that my summer will get me part of the way there.

    • @amcmr2003
      @amcmr2003 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeffrey Cliff Just to clarify, I was referring to Eliezer (from your link), somewhat half agreeing with you while half defending him (and making a bit of fun of him in return :)) Cool! I'm willing to help any writer with ideas, premises and/or ironing out inconsistencies, and not take any credit for it beyond a HT, in the hopes of, precisely that, expanding the circle of discussion of these ideas before it hits society unprepared (as if we could prepare idiots but, I'm verging on committing the same mistake I criticized Eliezer for here, hehehe). Amateur is great, because professionals will ask for money, which I don't have, and the audience I'd prefer to target is the younger crowd (they will take care of expanding it further afterwards). Moreover, not unlike Eliezer, these ideas are mostly expressed too pedantically.. I mean... too "sophisticatedly" in most venues to accomplish this goal. The idea is to have a relatively short but more frequent publishing release, not unlike a blog, which is also more palatable, and this can also work as a training ground for the author whilst also getting some marketing, possibly on transhumanist magazines. In your case, we can do it like Cervantes and many other authors through history who published in newspapers, breaking down a longer book into a series, but we can begin a side-project from scratch as well if you don't want to blemish that one :). If we had another kind of artist to join we could even make comic books.. who knows.
