The Lowest Distortion Headphone Ever Made? It's Our Carbon In Ear!
Dan walks you through setting up and measuring our Carbon IEM on an AudioPrecision system. In it, he shows that - at 100+ dB SPL levels, Carbon has less than 0.1% THD. Carbon is the lowest distortion headphone - over, on, or in ear - ever made. Bold Statement, but it's true!

    • @periodicaudio
      @periodicaudio 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, I'm still a fan of a separate DAC. IF you like the IEMs that have the USB C, go for it! However, DACs tend to be MUCH more subtle in sound quality differences than IEMs, so personally I would want to keep the DAC and IEMs/headphones separate. That way I can choose the IEM that I prefer the sound of. I can also use multiple headphones for different places. Like I might want over-ears at a desk/office, but IEMs when traveling. Same DAC does both, but different headphones. In the end, IMHO it's about a slight amount of convenience (built-in DAC - take one of our IEMs and heatshrink it to a Rhodium and you have the same thing) versus a pretty big gain in flexibility and application with multiple headphones/IEMs.

    • @periodicaudio
      @periodicaudio 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not quite. It may lose some amplitude (lower volume) depending upon angle from you. But the frequency will not shift. And note - that tone will be heard by EACH ear, so the change in amplitude (and the time difference between it arriving at each year) will be different, and your brain will use that difference in amplitude and time to determine where the sound is...:) Play a pure sine wave through a single speaker, close your eyes, and move around - you'll be able to point fairly accurately to where the speaker is! Our perception engine is freaking AMAZING!

      @philipreichel9303 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you very much for the detailed information. One last question: When I have my head in a position, where a sine wave of a specific frequency has a lower amplitude and I change the frequency, would the new frequency be differently influenced than the old one? I try to find out if the HRTF effect is bigger on one single sine wave than on sound that consists of avariety of sine waves. @@periodicaudio

    • @periodicaudio
      @periodicaudio 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@philipreichel9303 Yes and no. The HTRF changes with frequency, so yes the "sound" will appear most likely to have a different amplitude. BUT - your brain already knows the HRTFs (it's lived with them its whole life), so it "corrects" to make them sound right and uses them to find a different position. So, think of an HRTF as an equalizer function that you can use to determine where a sound is around you. And you know the way the equalizer work, so you'll still know what instrument/source is making that sound at a variable location. Does that make sense?

      Exactly! Just take the stuff available already on Google maps and show it in a small monochrome, 800x600 display in the corner. Or just have it whisper in your ear. And leave ALL the heavy-lifting processing on your phone - the AR display is just an extension of the phone. 800x600 x 8 bit monochrome @ 10 FPS can be done with UWB. That is plenty of resolution AND update rate for "your turn is here". If you have a 10 Mbps wireless connect to your phone - that's plenty.

Full 32/768 kHz input, DSD256 support, and 5X the output power. Silicon is also the ONLY portable DAC that we know of that is completely DC coupled from the D/A converter through the amplifier, meaning response down to 0 Hz (yes, DC) and with exceptionally low output impedance meaning very tight and extended bass response. So good, I bought two. One from you and one from another online vendor. I deployed one for gaming in an Nvidia Shield Pro and one for my phone of course. When paired with a pair of Koss PortaPro fitted with Yaxi pads - the sound is so accurate that I stood open-mouthed in shock. Bloody brilliant little DAC that truly outshines ALL the competition. Period.

    USB-C to 3.5mm DAC adapter will drain your device's battery faster.. your device will attempt to charge the plugged USB.. you'll notice it'll get warm while using it..

      With USB C and power charging, there won't be an issue with a competent DAC (Like our Rhodium). Resistances on the CC1/CC2 lines are used to indicate any ability to charge from the attached device; Rhodium's resistances present tell any host that we do NOT charge. So we just pull some current from the phone for operation. If your phone is getting warm while using Rhodium, I'd check to make sure you're using native hardware decoding of high res (which Rhodium supports), not software emulation.

      Thank you! It's small enough - for now. We're working on the next iteration of Wonkavision (in 4K) so we can shrink them down even more!

      😂👍 Yes. And we still mourn the loss. We'll be launching some exciting DAC/Amps in the near future. Is there anything in the audio realm you'd like us to make a video about?

    Excellent explanation! I have a question regarding subwoofers. How would compression effect THD? Example, if 1 sub has higher compression but lower THD compared to another sub that had no compression but higher THD... Is there a way to compare the two?

    • @periodicaudio
      @periodicaudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Compression doesn't really result or affect THD. It's a dynamic thing, where you turn the volume up 3 notches, but the output only goes up 2 notches. It's like a reduction in the dynamics of the sound (loud to soft), not addition of new non-existent content.

    So what does *80DB* of *THD* mean ? Is it *Signal Level - harmonics level* ?

    • @periodicaudio
      @periodicaudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! We should do an AMA on dB and such... For this question, though, every "order of magnitude" is 20 dB. So 100% THD would be 0 dB; 10% would be 20 dB lower (-20 dB). 1% would be 40 dB down, 0.1% would be 60 dB down, and 0.01% would be 80 dB down. So you can think of it as every time you move 20 dB, the decimal point moves. THD listed as "80 dB down" or "SINAD 80 dB" would mean THD (or in the case of SINAD, Signal to Noise And Distortion) would be 0.01% of the entire signal. Essentially zero!
