All the questions & unresolved plotlines make me wonder if Disney was hoping that Encanto would be a big hit franchise where there could be several movies, 1 or more tv series, shorts etc. where some or all of these topics could get dealt with when there was more focus time for them? I find it a fun movie to watch as well. Though some of it is quite sad & scary it may be better watched through the eyes of a less judgemental inner child to really enjoy it for what it is without wondering why all these things didn't happen or get explained. I'm not sure if Encanto was the big hit Disney envisioned to get more movies & other franchise sequels so that any of these dangling plotlines can be explored & resolved but all of your points in this video were good ones. It's really OK if a movie does leave some things unexplained &/or unresolved so viewers can be intrigued & so the potential storylines will be there should sequels be warranted but this movie really went overboard with the amount of unresolved mysteries, going way beyond what even 1 sequel movie might be able to wrap up should there ever be a sequel movie.

Thank you for your comments. I find that there's plenty to enjoy in Encanto, but I also think that truly great films can be enjoyed by rational adults as well as the "less judgmental inner child." High-quality writing has a certain depth to it that tends to mature with its audience. Toy Story is an example of how to make exceptional sequels. The first movie functioned perfectly well as a standalone story, and the 2nd and 3rd films explored the obvious question of what would realistically happen next. Since making children happy is the linchpin of the major themes and all the major characters--what would logically happen to these characters as their child grows up? In a very natural and organic way, there was more story to be told. And none of the films had to leave major plot events or character decisions unexplained in order to tell their respective stories (well, until the 4th one. But that's a long conversation...) I think you hit it right on the head--"this movie really went overboard with the amount of unresolved mysteries, going way beyond what even 1 sequel movie might be able to wrap up should there ever be a sequel movie." Add to that the outright contradictions that can't be explained even in 100 sequels, and you have something of a hot mess.

Well, while I do agree with the sentiment that this film is overrated, some of your critiques can apply to literally every movie in existence. Any movie can have irrelevant characters or characters doing things entirely illogical. Really, when you called everyone a child in an adult's body, I rolled my eyes. ALMOST EVERYONE ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET REACHES ADULTHOOD WITHOUT GROWING UP. Also, I'm pretty sure that both Bruno and Alma could have just told Dolores what they were doing and warned her not to tell anyone. And I'm sure that she only told Mirabel about Luisa because she was the only other character besides Mirabel, Alma and Bruno that was worried. Otherwise, all your critiques are valid. Also, I've had this mountain of ideas for a sequel floating around in my mind for a time now...

Thank you for your feedback! I really appreciate it. A couple of responses to your points: It isn't inherently a problem to have irrelevant or unnecessary characters. For example, I don't consider Camilo to be a problem. He's one of the most consistent characters in the film, even though he's not necessary. He also takes up very little time. But when half the cast is irrelevant and takes up lots of run time? That is a problem. Likewise, characters making foolish decisions is not inherently a problem. Characters acting contrary to their own established motivations and abilities without any explanation is a problem. The comment about "children inhabiting adult bodies" was a sloppy way for me to express it. There are lots of problems with the dinner scene; but I think it all stems from characters acting out of control not because they have an established reason for doing so, but simply because the script wanted drama and chaos to happen. Adults lose control of themselves all the time, but there are usually reasons for it. Give me at least one solid reason for each character to freak out, and the scene would be just fine--or at least better. There are all kinds of ways that baffling character actions could be explained. The problem is that they aren't explained in the movie. I will definitely take your comments on board and try to be more clear in my criticisms going forward. Thank you.

I'm glad I could be of service. I genuinely like a lot of things in the film, and it feels like a missed opportunity. It's nice to hear I'm not alone.
