Hello! I’m Veronica and I’m a periodontist sharing what I’ve learned throughout my journey in the dental profession - predental, dental, residency and life as a practicing provider. No person is an island. I am what I am today because of the sacrifices, generosity and support of many others -- my family, friends, professors, mentors and people I’ve met along the way. This is my way of paying it forward. I hope you will find these videos valuable and that it will help you in achieving your goals!

Preparing for the ADEX exam as a nontraditional candidate

This video describes the things I did to prepare myself for taking the ADEX exam after not practicing general dentistry since 2016. I talk about how I studied for the DSE, where I physically practiced for the exam, renting equipment and getting registered for the test. Best Wishes! Your description of the experience gives an excellent of what to expect 💯
Thanks for this video ! It helped a lot
Hello Veronica! My name is Jose Ortiz, I am US citizen. I made my dental school and Prostho residency in Mexico, I just finished my International Dental Program and I want to apply to a residency in the US. In my case (as an foreign prostho) I can’t apply to fafsa to my program. I have seen your options, can you please give me more advices about your no interest loans that you got? Wich other options do you think I can have? My residency program is 1 year. Thank you so much for your help.
Should i pursue dentistry if i have lower back pain?(Is neck and back problems inevitable?)
This helped me so much!! Thanks girl.
Make sure you mark which is the endo tooth, someone failed during the first 10 mins because they drilled the wrong tooth.
Very helpful thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hi, Thank you so much for the video! Very helpful! I am looking at CDCA exam manual and there is one thing not very clear to me is modification request form. What is mod request and how is it utilized during Manikin Based restorative exam? Thank you in advance for your comment!
Congrats on passing!!
Hey Dr. Veronica I hope you're doing good. Thank you for the very informative video. I am an international dentist and I wanna apply to a periodontics speciality program next year. Do you have any particular advice about applying to perio and how can I improve my chances other than ones mentioned in this video?
Hey Veronica, Could you make a video on being a general dentist vs being a periodontist?
Did your testing facility have rotary endo equipment? Do you have to bring all your own files etc? Thanks so much for these videos. They are super helpful.
For the restorative portion on the RTX caries teeth, did they tell you what tooth you will be working on or is it a “surprise” what teeth they assign you at the day of the exam? Thank you for the video.
Hi Veronica, Could u please let us know if the upper and lower jaws of the manikin had a rod to control mouth opening?
At my testing site, the mouth was held opened by a "block" that connected to the rod. My manikin didn't have one, so I asked the floor examiner and they brought me one.
When they allow pulp capping- do u actually do it? Thanks
My tooth didn't need a pulp cap so I can't say from experience. I'd just treat it like a "live" tooth. If it needs it, ask for a pulp capping request. You can also ask this question at orientation.
@@dentalhelpdesk4598 thanks!
Also, What kind of health clearance u had to do? Thanks))
COVID negative test within 10 days of the exam.
@@dentalhelpdesk4598 Was it a school requirement or CITA? Thanks!
Hello! Thanks for the info. Taking an exam in one month. With CITA. Could u tell me, please: 1. When u are done with the restoration part - do u remove the rubber dam to check occlusion and then putting it back for grading? 2. Do u have to ask for permission to remove a rubber dam before checking occlusion? 3.Is there different composite shades? Shade guide? Thanks!
When I took the exam (Oct 2020), rubber dam placement was not required for the restorative portion. I don't think you will be tested on matching composite shades. I just used Z100 A2.
@@dentalhelpdesk4598 Thaks!
were u able to use a heated plugger to break off the GP? Please advice. Thanks
My testing location did not have touch-n-heat, so I used an alcohol torch to heat my plugger to remove excess gutta percha.
@@dentalhelpdesk4598 thanks for the info
Did your trsting center let you use heat to sear off the gutta percha? Did you bring your own alcohol torch?
Can you make a video about the saturation in the dental field and where you see it going?
Good idea! I'll organize my thoughts on this.
@@dentalhelpdesk4598 yes please
Hi, veronica, i am planning to do the adex this year.....What did you use to study for the DSE portion of the exam?? I came across the ADEX/NERB for Dentists book by Rick J. Rubin and also "ADEX Dentists" by a company called Dentin which guarantees a passing mark. Are you familiar with any of these and can you give some information on the best study materials? It would be useful to help me decide on what to purchase. Below are links to the two books I came across: www.amazon.com/Adex-Nerb-Dentists-Rick-Rubin/dp/0982882459 www.dentin.co/adex/adex-dentists-2015-edition
Hi there. I talk about the DSE portion in this video th-cam.com/video/lfj-oXTsqx4/w-d-xo.html. Hope this helps.
@@dentalhelpdesk4598 thank you
I laughed at 2:44 in Houston there is no way you can go through the city without a car. The public transportation is great. Btw a dead giveaway your not from Texas is that 20min is a long drive. Here in Houston 20min is nothing. No offense. Thanks for the tips. I'm considering becoming a dentist.
I agree. A car is a necessity in cities like Houston! You are wrong in assuming I'm not from Texas though. I did all my dental training in San Antonio! Thanks for watching.
Awesome tips, doc! 👍🏼
Glad you think so!
Hi Veronica, Thank you for doing this. Helped me get an insight of what to expect. Did you buy stuff from university store or somewhere online ? Can you give some info about setting up a manikin at home and doing preps?
Hi there! I bought teeth from the Acadental website. For dental supplies, I used ebay and net32. For burs, I bought through straussdiamond. I did not setup a manikin at home, so I can't help you there. "KC does dentistry" has some videos on a home setup though, so try visiting her channel th-cam.com/channels/4hnj2H3dsvAkKjthjE1h2w.html
This is so helpful! I was just accepted into dental school so I am trying to find any resources to help pay for school when the time comes. Where did you go to dental school? If you don’t mind me asking🙂
Hi Veronica! It's rare that I run into someone with the same name! Congratulations on your acceptance! I went to UT Health San Antonio. Where will you be going to?
Veronica Jean DDS, MS Yes same here very rare esp. in the dental field! I received acceptances to USC + Loma Linda. I live close to Loma Linda so it’s much more convenient to go there.
@@veronicacaballero445 Awesome! Congrats again. I'm excited for you.
Thank you for this video! Current D1 who wants to do specialty (leaning perio right now) but already feeling overwhelmed with classes and I want to focus on getting good grades and not spread myself too thin. Any advice?
Hi Michael! Realize that you have 3 years to build yourself up for residency. So pace yourself and set goals every year. For example, maybe this semester you could take on a leadership position that is not too demanding and join a couple of clubs. In the summer you could plan on doing research or volunteer or shadow specialists. In your second year, you could go on a couple of mission trips and so on. It's all about time management. Hope it helps!
@@dentalhelpdesk4598 Thank you! What if I am not too adamant in taking on leadership roles?
@@dentaladdict98 Applicants are getting more competitive each year. Like I went over in the video, there are multiple ways to stand out, not just one.
Could you provide some resources for renting equipment?
Hi Pooja! The best way to find out about equipment rentals is by referring to the facility sheet for the exam location you are registered at. Usually the facility sheet will tell you if the site offers rentals or not. It will also list a contact person along with their email/phone number for more specific questions. Here is the CITA site information list: www.citaexam.com/dds/candidates/graduated. For CDCA, the facility information is usually listed on this page www.cdcaexams.org/dental-exams/dental-exam-calendar/ but for some reason, right now it is not showing up. So, how you would go about renting equipment really depends on where you decide to take the exam. Hope this helps!
@@dentalhelpdesk4598 Thanks. I want to know how to rent stuff to practice like handpieces?
@@poojadangri7845 Like I said in the video, I went to my old dental school to practice and used their equipment for 3 days. That's all the practicing I did. There are private companies that will rent you equipment to use for the exam (< 1 week rental) but I don't know of any long term rentals. You'll have to google and see what comes up.
Thanks so much for sharing this information! There isn’t much info about the exam out there but I really appreciated this!
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful!
Hey Veronica, thank you for sharing your experience! You are right, there aren't enough resources on this stuff! As an NYUCD 2017 grad, I feel your pain! I am actually working on a project right now for board studying for the NDEB/CDCA and also ADEX exam. Let me know if you would be interested in collaboration. You seem like a very passionate person who wants to help!
Thanks for reaching out. While I'm no expert on the ADEX exam, I'd be happy to help in any way I can.
