The rings around the wood keep it from splitting while the anvil is in use. In combination with a dangel hammer, the stake anvil could be employed to repair damage done to scythes and sickles. It had the added benefit of work hardening the edges of the tools. After beating the edge back into shape, a sharpening stone would be used to refine the edge.
