    This video is rather long. The historical background of the characters in this poem is the key to have a good understanding of them. It also makes sense why they were selected by Du Fu given the historical context and the way they acted. I would love to hear what you think of these characters and the meaning of this poem.

    Here is a rather unusual poem by Du Fu. Some scholars believe it was dedicated to a general; and rather than a straight forward compliment for the general, they believe it was a satire attacking the general! Others believe it was a compliment to a musician!! You can make your own judgement based on the arguments I presented here. I would love to hear from you after you watched this video!! There is also a bit noise in the background of this video. It just happened it was a very windy day when I was recording this video. My house was shaking a bit making the noise. I tried my best to minimise the noise but you can still hear it occasionally. Hope it won't affect you enjoying this video!! Looking forward to hearing from you!! 🤩🤩😅😅

    Dr Gao, that sounds like a nice idea. I just wanted to mention that there is a work titled ‘Nineteen Ways Of Looking At Wang Wei’ (1987) which considers a single poem of Wang Wei and the manner in which various poets and scholars chose to render it. I also wanted to mention an interesting commentary made by the renowned cellist, Rene Schiffer, which looks at Wang Wei’s sublime ‘Wheel Rim (Wang) River Collection; the numerous translations and issues surrounding them. I think he has some good insights. It’s also worth noting that even those who try to read Wang Wei in classical Chinese are“translating” him in the sense of how his poems SOUND, since they may read like a painting, but T’ang Chinese is nothing like modern Mandarin. Maybe you can speak about the role of rhyme, balance of tone, and impact of losing those explosive sounds like [t] and [p] on the overall poetic quality of Wang Wei. Afterall, it is a poem and not a painting. Schiffer’s blog can be found here if you are interested: www.duchiffre.com/blog/2020/10/16/-wang-weis-wang-river-cycle Thank you for your ongoing efforts, Wang Wei is sublime.

      Yes, that is rather unusual story in today's world and its international politics. People talks about just war. However, there is no such thing as just war. For a subject, who is the king does not make much difference as long as he fulfil what was prescribed as his duties by the Book of Rites or Heavenly mandate. This is one of the key principles of Confucian ethics.

    Looks to me like Confucianists value good administration more than good politics. Could this be the reason for the many dynasty downfalls and rebellions in Chinese history?

    • @dr.gaosclassroom
      @dr.gaosclassroom 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I believe there were many reasons why a dynasty fall. The Confucian values also went through a lot of revisions over time. I think the reasons for making Zhuge Liang and Duke Zhou the cultural heroes are from the perspectives of the emperors. They need loyal and capable administrators to help them to govern their empires. Most of the rebellions were raised by frustrated low level officials or resentful/ambitious generals. Like the Tang Dynasty was brought down by such generals; while the Song and Ming Dynasties suffered many rebellions from the low rank frustrated scholar officials.
