Instead of being upset at people singing with him, I think Mario would have enjoyed that his singing was so special to them. Mario as a 16 year old would sing along with Caruso, Ruffo, Gigli and Ponselle “letting his voice ring out with those of his idols.” (Mario Lanza: An American Tragedy, by Armando Cesari, p. 15) Mario knew the pleasure of singing along with one's heroes. And if Mario didn’t want to be compared to Caruso, it is strange that he took the movie role of playing Caruso and tried to emulate Caruso’s manner and behavior. Though Mario did say, “‘For me, the film of the Great Caruso was an unbelievable dream come true, but at first I didn’t know if I would dare give my voice to the singer I admired above all others.’” (Cesari, p. 116) Mario knew the public difficulties of being compared to Caruso by opera and music critics, but he went ahead and portrayed Caruso and Caruso’s singing.

Thank you William for highlighting the greatest tenor of all-time. I had first discovered the voice of Lanza when I was 8 in 1968, and he's still my favorite tenor. The only other tenor that came close to Lanza in terms of beauty, naturalness, and passion is Fritz Wunderlich. Thanks again for this video, your career, and your devotion to Christian music. At least you didn't attempt a duet with Mario, those videos are bothersome. Just put your voice online, Mario NEVER wanted to be compared with Caruso, and you need to develop your own style, not copy his.

I have a great respect and admiration for opera singers. Pavarotti was a great singer, but a bad actor. In his latest years, sometimes he was forgetting what he had to do on the stage... You voice is not comparable with his, not because of the quality, but due to a bad word spelling - I am italian, and I can clearly hear the bad accent. Not your fault - it's quite difficult to spell correctly a completely different language, and after 25 years of stop! Thanks for your effort - Keep going!

Thank you for your comments. The criticism of iron not Gold, and not Pavarotti, I agree with completely. When I recorded the Nessun dorma I wanted to put an opera aria on what at the time I thought was going to be my last album (THE MANY VOICES OF WILLIAM HARNESS). I was 65 years old, and I chose Nessun dorma because it was the easiest aria for me to sing when I was singing opera. It was right in the middle of my range, but at 65 years of age it was almost an impossibility for me, not having sung opera for way over 20 years. I hear many things that I would like to have changed, but at 65 I was just blessed to be able to get through the aria and get it on the album. I didn't want to be compared with Pavarotti, but when I was younger the newspapers many times compared me that way. As I mentioned in my introduction, we thought it was fun.
