Steve and Alejandro dust off their 90’s vests, grab their silencers and head into this 1995 American action thriller directed by Richard Donner and starring Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, and Julianne Moore. The original script was written by Matrix creators, Lana and Lilly Wachowski, though I wouldn’t ask them about it. It’s complicated.

There’s also a very faint halo that forms around Val’s head at the end of the movie when he’s driving away, another nod to the old show.
100 points for an amazing observation! - Alejandro
Ohhhhhh "Willow"?? OMG - watch how HOT Val Kilmer is for his future wife, leading lady Joanne Whalley!
We both (over here) agree that Val Kilmer did an *EXCELLENT* job as a mystery action star in "The Saint". I think he's being too hard on himself as well.
I so wish The Saint had turned into the envisioned franchise, especially given what happened with his throat cancer and the tragic loss of his voice & etc. Back to the ending, though - didn't you love the voice cameo of Roger Moore, giving the ending news report?
Agreed that the whole seduction thing is *meh* - like under threat of mortal danger, on the run after escaping the paddywagon, she's all "oh, kiss me you fool" and "What do *I* mean to you??" etc. Bleah. Nope. BUT - but! - remember, her "breathless" heart thing was HEALED THROUGH A SAINTHOOD-QUALIFYING DIVINE *MIRACLE!* THAT's the missing piece of the puzzle. It wasn't just a "dropped story line" - it was part and parcel of Kilmer's qualifications to be considered a legitimate "saint"! Like when he's counting off the miracles - the apparatus *works* (that's 1) and then Ilya and Ivan were arrested (miracle 2) and then Shue says she loves him (that's 3). But IN REALITY, there is ALWAYS a "healing miracle" associated with sainthood! Shue's heart condition fills this criterion.
Did you see the clip where Ilya *assassinates his own father* while explaining to him that the most dangerous status in Russia is to be a rich man??? That was *awesome!* Oh, and before I forget - I think Val Kilmer really DID go into the freezing water - when he comes out, his face looks swollen the way ice divers' faces look when they come up. Ice divers go in in *dry* suits, but their faces are exposed to the water through their masks, and when they come up, their faces are all swollen from the icy water (I watched a lot of Jacques Cousteau specials as a child). So I mark that up to Val Kilmer "method acting" - all the props.
Woooooooooah.
Original ending: What I read was that Dr. Russell is assassinated, but the "test audiences" didn't like it so they changed it. The original "love interest" was Frankie - on a *motorcycle!* And Simon Templar battles it out *mano a mano* with Ilya ON THAT GRAND CHANDELIER (where in the released version they were asking Ivan Tretiak how high to raise it and he says "All the way up!") and Templar causes it to FALL with Ilya still on it, to his death - such DRAMA!!
YEEEEESSS! The DRAMA!
C'mon, didn't you love the announcer's commentary about "last week's Moscow fireworks"????
Okay - the ending. Well, she's driving in her classic Volkswagen (how university-wonky, right?) and she's got a handwritten set of instructions on a piece of paper that she's following! He apparently sent those to her! Once she gets in there and they get back together, he has that moment where he says, "I don't do anything normal" - it really felt like he'd forgotten his lines and was improvising, all embarrassed-like. She of course leans in "I know your life" and makes it work.
The heart thing - YOU MISSED IT!! *THIS* was a HEALING MIRACLE, which is absolutely *REQUIRED* for someone to be canonized by the Catholic Church! That's why Russell says to him later, "You're my own personal saint." Because no one else knows about that healing miracle, but it is absolutely a healing miracle, as her heart is *healed!* So THIS is one of the criteria that PROVES him to be a *REAL* "saint"!!!
As far as how long it takes between "You stole my formula you dirty rotten scoundrel" and the stripping down for body warmth, remember that he saved her life in the paddywagon by "palming her pills from her purse" (oh please). AND he got them out of there with the knife in his boot that she has to retrieve! Plus, remember how he (as Jose Ferrar) called her out at the hotel bar? "No - you're in love" and she slaps him? She WAS in love. And that was her actual motivation for tracking him down, not her *cards* which were the superficial excuse. She wanted HIM! And as far as those cards go - it's a *short* formula. To claim that she needs "about 2 hours" to put the formula together, the very formula she's been working with for years and years?? C'mon! As someone with a background in the sciences, that's a bridge too far! She'd know it backwards and forwards - in her sleep!
About the recognizing-the-saints'-names - would YOU recognize "Isador Bankenjaz" as an obvious Catholic saint w/o years and years of Catholic school??
The poet Thomas More? Who died for his faith?? Did you notice his exclamation "Issis!" when she says she searches for energy? That is a VERY South African expression, apparently - that's how they say "Jesus!" So the South African accent turns out to be *brilliant* - at least in the scene-by-the-nekkid-sculpture. Back at her place, some of the romance dialogue is pretty cringe and I CAN do without that, but honestly, Kilmer's embodiment of his South African national identity is linguistically spot on.
Ilya, the bad-guy son, he actually had his moments! Like where he realizes there's Unexpected Open Window and goes to investigate instead of snorting the line from his cocaine watch - that's some surprising dedication for a nepotism brat. He also displays impressive fighting skills - while, yes, I think he was underutilized (somewhat), I found a lot to appreciate about Ilya. Including "I'm a damn devil" and "We're busy, old witch" and of course "Bye, sonny." Also, the Holland Park hit squad - the screenplay failed Ilya's character. He NEVER would have shot at the unarmed policewoman (bobby) FIRST, letting Templar escape - he would've finished off Templar FIRST and only *then* turned his attention to the policewoman. Templar was RIGHT THERE!! So I think Ilya got a bit of a bad rap there - it was obvious but also obviously out of character. I did love his crack whore underwear girlfriend at the "rat race" scene, ngl.
Oh please - the *thermal* suit?? NO security system goes off *temperature!* Think about it - the *slightest* draft and it would alarm! No, even back then, they'd do MOTION sensors. That thermal angle was just silly. Oh, and Ilya's comment "Wrong place for a condom"? Ugh. Don't. Bleah.
About that first scene - it's "The Far East - *YESTERDAY* " and then it's "Moscow - *TODAY* " or whatever. It's the "yesterday" and "today" juxtaposition - I REALLY liked that. Can't actually explain why, I guess it plays into the dreamy timeless atmosphere of what's making The Saint The Saint - how his backstory is right there, so *present* in his "today". Or whatever. And can't forget the music - the music is wonderful!
LOVE Alan Armstrong and his co-Scotland-Yard-ist, and of course the nuclear physicist Lev Botvin - he is absolute GOLD in this!
I too saw Eyes Wide Shut, and of course recognized Ivan Tretiak (because that's the name of his I can spel) in it (I *love* him) but I missed that part about the ending! I'll be here for your analysis, and I just may have to rewatch it between now and then.
My husband bought the VHS for me. I'd given birth to our firstborn the month before, March 1997, so no movies in theaters for me! He bought it some time later than that, obviously - it had had time to come out on tape. And we've both loved it ever since - we've watched it *dozens* of times! It's a terrific romp, so quotable in so many different situations - and I've never seen Elisabeth Shue look better. It's just a terrific classic film. Glad you guys chose it!
Your reviews sometimes serve to remind me how bloody old I am now . 😅 Also, I thought you were going to skip over talking about reading the original script and I was yelling at you through the internet, “Tell me about that script!” 😂
Hahahahaha! I was getting to it 😂- Alejandro
Also saw this in the 90's... She likely contracted the 'wolf demon' after experiencing the "passion of the wolf" and having sex with Will. Happens all the time.
“Happens all the time” - amazing.
One of my favorite movies. Reminded me of Blues clues when Steve left, I thought this was a silent reference to this shift in kids programming
I haven't seen it in a long time but I watched it multiple times Laughing myself to tears every time. I do recall that a lot of people that I knew who saw it thought it was very dark and would give me looks over what I thought was so hilarious. I don't care and I really need to see it again soon. Thanks for reminding me about this.
Love this movie. It is in my top ten of great comedies. and in the top five of Robin Williams movies. I did not see this in the theater, I do remember commercials and wanting to see it but it was in and out so fast I missed it. So Got it and BB movie night and have seen it a total of 5-6 times and it is just as funny each time.
I still have the DVD for this movie and will never get rid of it because it's such a treasure.
I absolutely loved this film despite it being considered a flop. Ed Norton’s performance was pitch perfect. Can’t wait to rewatch after all these years! Thanks for another interesting episode!
From the first time I saw Legend in the theater I found the music blaring and annoying. I am not an Anderson fan either. Ferry's song is fine because it's not in the movie. The theatrical had annoying cuts imo also, I feel the directors cut smoothed out the story and provides far more appropriate medieval orchestral music
Excellent points! - Alejandro
I always liked the film, especially the office storyline about him getting rejuvenated and getting his revenge on those people, his wife. I also liked the wolf expert. Had no idea he was in old man make up ^^ I really liked his exploits as the wolf, yet I don’t like the final fight. Maybe the lightning was too bright. Suddenly the make up feels goofy to me. Maybe Spader’s transformation to the wolf happens too fast as well in comparison to our main character. As for the ending I always felt it was implied that she was the wolf from the start all along. Maybe it works better when you think that in wolf form you don’t have that much control. She might only sense later on that Will is a wolf and she might be responsible for it.
I remember thinking that movie was garbage 😂
what an awesome into, haven't seen the insides of a old VHS player for years!
Guys she clearly WAS the wolf from the start the whole time.. This explains her change in behaviour towards Jack Nicholson once she realises he is changing and explains why she is interested in a man twice her age.
I seen it!
I'm old enough to remember when the trailer for Wolf was playing on all the television sets inside Sears.
That. is. amazing. - Alejandro
This movie is damn good. It’s really underrated.
She didn't get bitten. There's a scene where they talk about how passion can cause a person to become a wolf. I barely remember it. So she fell in love with Jack Nicholson's character and transformed. I like this movie because it tries to make werewolf mythology plausible, which seems hard to do.
A new point has entered the arena!!! Well done.
Aha! That certainly explains it. I'm satisfied with the why/how, but still am not a huge fan of the twist. I, too, like this take on werewolf lore. Makes a nice change from the usual, "Oh, it's a full moon. Now I'm all hairy and murdery." Showing the gradual change and emotional toll it takes was well done.
Howling good time gents! Happy Halloween🐺
You might say we took a real bite out of this one. 😎
She was a horse girl and the movie makes it very clear that horses hate wolf people, so no she can't have been the wolf from the beguinning, at least I never thought so, I always figured it was a dying wolf who wanted to pass on the curse/gift
I agree 100% (don’t tell Steve) 😁- Alejandro
Interesting discussion. I was not aware in the slightest of the existence of this movie. Something I had been thinking about yesterday while watching “The Others” was that I’ve come to miss the landscape of cinema that existed during the 90s and 2000s, in which there seemed to be just a wider array of films in cinemas - to the extent that a film with such noteworthy people involved like this could essentially be just one of many offerings on show (and ultimately end up being somewhat forgotten) and one could go and see a film that didn’t have to - nor was expected to be - great, but was nonetheless satisfying good.
Satisfying good is an excellent description.
I think Tim Capella's appearance with is oily, muscly, visage tied into the overall aesthetic of the gathering and tone of the community and how these young vampires with their strange clothes and demeanor just blended right it.
I 100% support this. - Alejandro
Remember that movie? I never forgot it :) 1987 was a good year. I was 5 years old, and I got the greats like The Lost Boys, RoboCop, Lethal Weapon, Predator, The Running Man, Full Metal Jacket, The Witches Of Eastwick, Hellraiser, and for something a bit softer, *Batteries Not Included.
YES!!!!
"These guys are cool! They ride motorcycles! They hang out in a cave! They... get takeout!" LOLOL.
Hilarious! 😂
Thanks guys! It was a lot of fun to join you, share a laugh, and talk about my secret love of Diane Weiss. ❤ You guys are the best!
Haven’t seen Fox and the hound and until a few days ago did t see the black cauldron? Did you even watch Disney movies as a child? Those were cornerstones of my childhood
Hey can you do an episode on the 1985 film entitled "Return To Oz"? Directed by Walter Mersh" it's got a troubled production, that involved Spielberg calling Disney. It's interesting. :D
We will put it on the list!
That was a PG-13 romp through the Black Cauldron. 😂Glad to know, I never need to go watch this film. Thanks all for the fun and hilarious episode. Looking forward to the next one with your handsome guest.
Great soundtrack
Good discussion.
Thank you! We're glad you enjoyed it.
If one cares about Orson Welles, one has to watch this film!
Great movie with a great soundtrack by Graeme Revell ( and Duran Duran ).. They did a splendid job with the music and I often find myself going back ( nearly 30 years later ) to listen to the wonderful theme tune that has aged so well with time.
It got groovy and enjoyable. Answer - I did not remember that movie…but I would like to see it now. ❤
I think you should and would love to hear your thoughts on the cinematography once you do!
