Thank you for a very comprehensive video! I have been doing copper matte for a while and often get fantastic results, but recently am getting mostly black (with a little bit of color). I have never had this issue before, typically a bad result was a lot of green without much color. I had changed kilns because I no longer have access to the kiln I used to use, but other types of firing (i.e. saggar) work as expected in the new kiln. I have a new batch of black copper oxide bought from the same pottery supply shop I always use. Have you seen this issue? Any thoughts on the cause? Thanks!
I used to do this type of pottery until I learned that the colors don’t last, at least for me. They will last a few years if you keep the pot out of the sun, but eventually they turn a dull silver. No reds.
did you try spraying with something like Krylon triple thick clear? Or another water based preservative like Minwax Polycrylic? I learned to use those from Randy Brodnax/Don Ellis and those preserve the colors of the copper based raku glazes.

Use a course, high grog clay. USO by Laguna Clay in the USA, Bruce's White in the San Diego, California area, from Free Form Clay & Supply. Great for all Raku methods.
Love your work and fabulous film, when you fire it to 750 how long do you keep it at that temperature (soak)? Can you confirm the colours the materials produce - Ferric Chloride -Orange, Copper Carbonate - Green, Sugar - Black, Coffee Grains - ?, Seaweed - ?
Hi, I do apologise for not responding sooner. Fire the pot to 250 hold at 250 for about 15 minutes then increase the the temp to around 750 turn off and allow to cool to around 300 .remove from the kiln ,carefully remove the foil and allow the colours to develop.the ferric chloride will give you light orange,the copper carbonate will give give you a rich orange the sugar will create halos within the colours. Seaweed will create black/ green spots, coffee grains black spots , Epsom salts will give you yellow if when you close your foil you press some of the foil tightly against the pot you will create grey . The results are very unpredictable . Hope you find this helpful. Regards Logan

Hi Colleen, thank you for your comments, yes I made my own raku kiln from a dust bin, there are several you tube videos which you would find helpful my recommendation is that if you choose to make one , use a dustbin with straight sides most bins are slightly conical and this makes it a little difficult in cutting the fibre.when purchasing fibre choose the none carcinogenic . You can achieve the same results in a pit fire or oil drum fire if you add sufficient wood you should reach 750 to 800 centigrade well worth trying. Hope you are keeping well in these difficult times.Regards Frank
Are these actually food safe? I've read that it's a sealing technique and I watched a doc about Tibet where they do something similar to make all black pots that are sealed.
Cody Newberry I agree for none acidic dry food they would be fine, I have not tried to put in a dish washer as I think it would not give a favourable result.

Yes you can use beeswax or mink oil ..there also other oils bud I don’t remember right now. Sometimes you need to wax them again after a while

Cody Newberry I believe them to be food safe, but personally would not use them for eating or drinking.
@@franklogan7557 I'd probably just use them for dry and non-acidic foods. The results on plates are to nice to pass up though. 🤣
