BioAlgaeSorb bioremediation and algal growth presentation- Dr Alla Silkina
The BioAlgaeSorb project focuses on enabling European SMEs to remediate wastes, reduce Green House Gas emissions and produce biofuels via microalgae cultivation.
The project addresses specific needs of several key European SME groupings, via integration of technologies for effluent water remediation and production and exploitation of microalgae biomass for mitigation of climate change (renewable energy generation, carbon dioxide capture) as well as production of valuable bio-products using a biorefinery approach.
This presentation describes the results obtained from growing algae using wastes at Swansea University.

Thank you for sharing this presentation. The academia behind this is fascinating and the potentials for a viable bio based carbon scrubber is awe inspiring!

How do you harvest the algae? Is that one and the same as the cleaning you referred to?

Will the work be further outlined in a paper, and maybe even the CAD Files / Control Code be released, or is this locked down as intellectual property?

Dr. Darren, I have a number of questions on your photobioreactor. a) What is the ideal algae species for indoor bioreactor (in temperate country) b) how much lighting is required for the algae to grow, amount of energy required, c) what is the estimated cost to build i.e. cost / m3 of wastewater, d) how frequent do we need to de-sludge the algae and e) what are the maintenance work required for an efficient operation of the reactor. Thanks.

So you can produce CO2 from limestones or shellfish to feed these special algae cells too? I know the demands for algae crude oils will not wane for a long time. As a fun project like it always was, it should continue as big as it can. Investments will be required. I like how economical it is, how much expertise is required, and how cool the idea of a bio reactor sounds.

Are there any flat plate photobioreactors?

    • @samkenknight7132

Seems like a great idea honestly. More surface area without the added challenge of sourcing thick tubes. Seems like this could be way better for DIY scale at the very least.

@@samkenknight7132 Hmm but I think there could be a problem with algae film forming on the walls of flat PBR's :)

@@samkenknight7132 Maybe, but in the tube you have higher velocities of the liquid culture, the forming of the biofilm should be slower

Of course this is only my speculation, but I see that many biotech companies which uses PBRs with artificial lighting, they use tubes, not flat panels :)

its not an error, its called flue gas cause its existing a flue, in this case a chimney

ms17@gmail.com ms17@gmail

How can I measure the amount of CO2 being sequestered from a photobioreactor? It is small, 3L in volume with nanonochloropsis strain of algae.

You can measure how much biomass is made and how much oxygen is produced for example
