HONEST review of TRUSTED HOUSE SITTERS | Should you be a house sitter?

Would really appreciate your self or any experienced pet/house sitter given their opinion on the following :- I am a 71 years old, British, very fit, a great deal of travelling, working and living around the world and when Airbnb started up, spent three summers staying with owners having a great time seeing Europe. I would be a 'newbie' but was a volunteer at a Wildlife Centre caring and doing presentations for the animals they had, plus over the last ten years have for friends walked, kept an eye on and even have lived with me several dogs and cats. Ex RAF, Civil Engineering, DH Teacher and IT Trainer meeting a wide range of people in my time. A gardener, house renovator and good at dealing with problems or a crisis. Recently learnt nearby for maybe two years major construction works which will negate me sitting reading, writing and painting in my very quiet garden, thus the idea of pet/house sitting now appeals me. Trusted House Sitters have told me, I would be in great demand but research in reading many 'sitters reviews' are ALL females or couples, as yet have NOT come across and oldie and a male like me. Thus even though very much like the idea of house sitting, i.e. lounging about, painting in the garden and taking dogs for a walk and cuddling cats, I now suspect I have been 'naive' in believing I would be a popular choice by owners and even though the company 'say' they have a money-back policy if after 14 days a new sitter gets no bookings - I am not convinced I would get my money back plus the time and effort in applying to sit which would be places that were not popular, i.e. non-tourist type places as in most cases, been there and done it. Thanking anyone, who spends time reading my comment and any opinions or experiences would be most gratefully received.
Sitters should be paid it’s not a fair trade.
I’m here to review the site to know whether to sign up.
Do you ever worry about cameras in your bathroom or sleeping area?
If they get caught it’s jail time so not a very smart idea for the homeowner.
I enjoy nice homes ! Just hesitant to trust it
I’m in the uk and hesitating to pay for the subscription
How ‘competitive’ is it to land a house? And how hard and how long was it to get your first stay when you started?
Great video! Thank you for this informative review.
do you meet the pet parents before they leave, or do they just leave instructions and you never meet them? how does that work
Hello, having watched your video, my girlfriend and I decided to become a member on the website. However, we are asked to give a reference to have our profile live. We don't know anyone. So, how can we have a reference? Could you help us with that?
Supposedly you can get letters of recommendation from family and friends. You can ask customer service about this- I’ve just begun looking into it myself 😅
@@Msanabanana1973 Thank you for your response. Yes, they can leave a review, which our friend did.
So it seems to vary wildly, but like are you able to go out and be a tourist at all? Like how many of these owners want you to just stay home and be there for their pets? Otherwise I guess it gives you a free place to sleep/shower for a couple days but I’d just stay at hostels so I am not tied down to such commitments.
how good do you get paid? or do you even get paid? or is it more something to do on Holidays? I ffantasize about housesitting a few weeks, then travel around a bit an dthen housesit again. Would this be possible?
You don't get paid, you get to stay at their residence for no charge, that is your compensation.
This video might as well say “if you want to breath open your lungs and inhale air” This shit is common since and if you are an adult that needs “tips” on how to house sit…. Then you should go back to the short bus that picked you up from the group home you live at
I did trusted house sitters and did not realize it was fucking free!!!! I had to watch two dogs and it was terrible. But my Lord imagine my surprise when I found out I was not getting paid for two days of work!
THS simply facilitates the haves taking advantage of free labour from the have-nots basically and the true winners in the equation are THS with a recurring membership fee and AI-driven customer service. But hosts also shouldn't ever assume that sitters are broke and desperate and easily taken advantage of. For example, we are simply childfree and digital entrepreneurs with flexibility (always looking for a site idea like THS to improve on!) so we likely earn more than hosts with regular jobs and a mortgage shackle. It's a trap in many ways so please do your research on all the THS Reddit threads, etc and never ever assume a 5* reviewed home is 5*. Take notice of any poorer reviews if they sound rational and balanced.
How great is the chance that you get the application? Does it ever really happen that they choose someone else over you? I'm looking at a 3 week application but ideally I'd only pay for the subscription if I knew i was gonna get it 😅 but obviously there is no guarantee.
What about someone with a shit house. I need someone to look after my budgie as me and my partner want to go on two holidays next year.
There's plenty of animal lovers on there that I'm sure won't mind, I know a lot of bird enthusiasts! Also if the location is decent and it's a place they've never been to, that can be used to gain more interest in your listing / even just a cozy place with a friendly host
Fix your house
You should DEFINITELY get paid for it. Sure it could be a great experience but as I’ve just finished my first 2 house sits… it should definitely be something that’s rewarded, you’re caring for and walking pets, it’s not completely like a airbnb where you can actually do everything you want on your own time. Plus it depends on the owner. Some owners are just so anal about things and wants excessive updates and although you’re staying in their house.. you paid the same amount as them for the platform so you’re obviously genuine and in it for the love of pets… some owners can give such a weird vibe than what’s displayed on trusted sitters. This last one was a contrast, although I didn’t get to meet her, key was left in Dropbox, everything was explained once in the beginning and that’s IT. She left me free to my own devices and trusted my care with her dog and the difference was nice. I didn’t feel like I had to be on eggshells or anything, and she was very chilled and so was the sweet dog…. BUT still. 2-3 walks a day is lowkey labor for a pet that’s not yours. It should at LEAST be compensated because you’re spending all that time with the dog which is fine, but when you could be exploring more. It should at least be payed for so you don’t feel an uneven exchange of time and then you can use that to explore and recharge to walk the pets some more. Like it’s only common sense but those are the only downsides. It’s true the homes on there are very lovely, great places to stay and great locations. It’s a good opportunity to travel or just stay in a good place with pets.
If you want to get paid for it take actual pet sitting jobs? Letting someone stay in your house for free is already a big deal... if you consider walking for and feeing a pet too much for free accommodation there is seriously something wrong with your views 😂
@@vicki6210 Most people are average workers with a mortgage shackle - very few people own a home outright so get off your high horse. Hosts should really pay a company the money saved by avoiding doing exactly that with THS.
you would want cats then, less intensive
@@vicki6210You’re not letting someone “stay in your house”, you want them to stay there and care for your animals. It should definitely be paid.
@@metastractthen take the many jobs that are actually paid and leave those of us who can't enter into the industry otherwise to have free accommodation when we travel. It obviously hasn't occurred to you that young people and students also want to be able to stay in different places for free instead of shelling out money we don't have on Airbnb and hotels
It’s definitely a cool idea, but just like so much other gig work, such as door dash, it is exploitation to the max. That is absolutely insane, not only do the house owners have to pay money to list it but you as a potential sitter have to pull money and then you do not get paid at all! They are just literally having the technology to host the app. Such expectation so just a few young entrepreneurs can have a yacht
Firstly, pet owners pay very high costs for sitters in certain countries, especially those with experience or working for agencies (hiring a random person with no background check, ID check or reference is much more risky if they're being left alone in your home..) the fee that owners pay through the site is much lower which is why they have such high ratings, not everyone can afford to shell out AND go on holiday. Secondly, those who sit usually just love spending time with animals and travelling (free accommodation for us is more than enough, I work a full time job and am trying to save for a house while still visiting other countries, the global opportunity is brilliant) It may not be for you but there's plenty of benefits to others
Also keep in mind that a one off yearly payment offers pet owners UNLIMITED pet care throughout the year, and sitters basically have free (some even luxury) "AirBNBs" for even up to a month in a foreign country. In the UK housesitting can cost £60+ per night, imagine a 2 week holiday- that's already almost triple the yearly subscription
Housesitting can be quite demanding. It depends on the host. If they have lots of pets its tiring, its more of a chore 😁 we had a host who demand to much like wanting us to let them know from time to time if there pets are okay… lol anyway, we have been living in a van and we just try housesitting if we like it. We did find some good hosts who does not demand a lot… to make the story short, just be mindful if they have lots of pets, dogs are really tiring you have to walk them and pick up their poop 😁 of course and they’re so needy… if we housesit again, we prefer just cats no dogs, chickens are fine as well…
You sound really lazy and sketchy. Sounds like your expectation is to do nothing while you get paid to stay in their home. If it’s a pain for you to send a simple text update to the owner of the pet, you’re just awful at the job you’re supposed to be doing.
I haven’t done a house sit yet. But there was one with a whole list of chores! I don’t understand why people are like that. This is a give and take. Getting an Airbnb is expensive, but so it hiring someone to pet sit. A list of chores is just taking advantage of the house sitter.
@@Nadia-ox1kf yes exactly! well said…thats what we feel when we housesit..unless you only look after a house without pets 😀 just water the plants once a week…
@@Nadia-ox1kfExactly! I recently did my first house sit in my city as I’m saving to lease and love pets so I don’t mind! But the owners can make it feel exhausting for no reason 😭😂 wanting EXACT details and this 1 in particular, if you don’t respond right then or didn’t take dog on walk at exact time, boom left a 3 star review despite thanking me and telling me the place was spotless in person like? Yeah it makes more sense to get paid for this, especially when there’s dogs involved. It’s convenient but tbh only enjoyable if the owner is chilled along with their pets
@Nadia-ox1kf "A is expensive... but so is B" - that's why it's a trade... lol
I understand that people have more control with this site, but I would never pay to house sit. I get paid $200 a day and $300 on a holiday and sit homes every day of the year. I also work remotely so I am making ~$100k just from the sitting a year and then my realtor commissions. If people like this site, more power to them, however, there is a lot of demand and people willing to pay you for it. I do 0% prospecting and all of my leads are referrals through book of business and some sites. Being a sitter, as it is as close to passive work, was the best decision I could have made.
All this whinging about not getting notifications from messages. With the app you get notifications for every message, if you don't have the app you still get an email when you have a message unless you turned it off.
Just one question.... Do premium members get any preference over Basic members? Do they go to the top of a list? There are three different types of membership ranging from £199 Premium; £129 Standard or £99 basic. Which do you have and would you say the 'extras' of a Premium membership are worth the money? i appreciate £199 isn't expensive but I do like VFM. If I can save £100 its 4 return flights with Ryanair. 🙂
I'm à Premium and am not advantaged. I only get insurance ( in case of cancellation)
Did you choose where to travel based on where you got a gig? It seems difficult to line up the location, exact dates, etc if you choose a location first and then look for what gigs there are. Also do you find it to be very competitive?
and what if the pet owner cancel last minute and you booked far away? I mean is there a protection for your flight costs? :-)
They will cover your alternative accommodation up to £150 a night max 1500 I believe
They will but you have to have the premium membership
Ive just discovered the website, it looks so awesome! I’ve pet sitted before just not through the website. How easy is it to find a house sitting job when you don’t have experience on the website itself?
Ah great! I would say it is not so hard to find your first house sit. Since you've got so much experience already, you can mention this in your profile and when applying for house sits. Make sure you get external references and I think you'll get house sits pretty easily! Just be persistent and keep applying. Apply for local ones first to build up your reviews.
It depends if you want to go to Paris, New York or rural sits less fashionable... Without references it's harder of course. But careful, pet sitting is a huge responsability. If you have no experiences have never owned animals, owners (" pet parents" in THS terminology) will be anxious. Trust is essential. Pet sitting is a HUGE responsability
Perfect. Great tips. So helpful. Thank you.
is it hard for them to accept. or if you apply to one you like do they normally say yes or is there big waiting list? when you start an account how quickly can you get a house to sit as you wont have any views /experience doing so
It is quite easy for them to accept you and once they say yes, then it goes ahead almost indefinitely. When you first set up an account I would say it takes some time to get your first house sitting. It personally took me a month or so, but I have known other people to get them in a few weeks. It depends on how cautious the homeowners are and whether they prefer to take on someone with lots of experience and reviews.
@@hollycopedigitalnomad how does it work do they like show you around before they leave or do they leave a key in a keybox or what is the process from being accepted to going into their house and then leaving what is the process?
@@billybarber3438 It depends on the people, but usually they like to show you around before they leave so that you know where everything is. If this is not possible they may leave a key for you and give you instructions. The leaving process also depends on the people too but normally you just leave the key in the house and close the door behind you as they will have a spare key. The arriving and leaving processes are usually quite smooth sailing.
You can see many answersvon these topics if you go to THS forum * you don't need to be à member for that)
Hi... I came across your videos yesterday and watched the one where you started your THS experience. I've been with them a year now, just about to do my 6th, a month in a beautiful hamlet in North Yorkshire and finish with a 3 week sit in Somerset area in November. This has been the best choice for me in a long time and I'm loving it. I've only done UK so but hoping to get to Portugal next spring as I'm really interested in exploring Portugal as a country. I'm 65 and found this to be a very safe and affordable way to travel. All my reviews have been 5* too and l get a lot of requests to sit too, mostly l have to decline as dates are not compatible. On the subject of notifications though, l still get an email whenever l receive a communication and once l am confirmed, their profile then says 'no longer in need of a sitter' so l would suggest, once someone books you, get them to confirm on the site, it then goes into 'upcoming sits' l'm going to watch your sits abroad now, see how they have gone ... Keep enjoying THS 💛
Hi Alice, sounds like you're having a brilliant time housesitting and making the most of travelling! The North Yorkshire sit sounds amazing. I'm sure you'll get a Portugal sit no problem although I have been struggling to find a suitable one in Portugal. They seem to be few and far between, but keep looking . Thanks for the tips on notifications! Enjoy housesitting!

But i saw on this website some people requiring sitters to stay at home and be with pets most of the time. Hell no. I will take care of your pet of course, feed them and cuddle them, but this trade is for me to enjoy different cities and have somewhere to stay in exchange of feeding your pets. If you want someone to look after your pets all day and night then get someone for that reason and pay them!
Hi fellow housesitter. Currently coming to the end of a 3 week sit in Copenhagen via trustedhouse sitters. I think the changes they've made recently removes some of the points you raised especially listings being paused once 5 sitters apply.
