The Fungus by Harry Adam Knight (Josh Brosnan), published in 1985, is basically the origin of post-apocalyptic fungus horror. There are earlier works out in the world but this book had the most impact (and is a damn good read as well). Looking at the comments I can't help but wonder why so many see The Last of Us as the first fungus-based post-apocalyptic story ever made. If anything it borrowed nearly everything from previous works, leaving only the interpersonal and social commentary left.
