World's Most Unequal Town
มุมมอง 19K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Stellenbosch, located just outside of Cape Town, proudly has two homegrown billionaires with a combined net worth of over $8,000,000,000, all while one in three residents live on less than $100 a day, making it probably the most unequal town in the world.
World's First City to Run Out Of Water?
มุมมอง 3302 ปีที่แล้ว
Years after Cape Town avoided running out of water, neighboring Gqeberha is now struggling (previously named Port Elizabeth). Yet there was not one registered professional engineer in the Department of Water Services under ANC management, which is also accused of losing US$150 million to corruption in a province with nearly 50% unemployment. Where Wild Antelope Roam In Town
มุมมอง 3702 ปีที่แล้ว
Imagine a place where animals and humans live side by side in town without conflict! A place where the antelope know how to cross the street, are polite enough to use the sidewalk, and even ‘cut’ your grass for you! That would be Oranjemund in Namibia, a former-restricted diamond mining town previously governed by De Beers, which has created a situation where gemsbok, springbok, and ostrich are...
World's Most Unequal City (World Bank)
มุมมอง 8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The City of Cape Town usually has a squeaky-clean government audit and maintains a high credit rating by Moody's. Its former mayor had also been elected as World Mayor of the Year in 2008. Despite all of this, it is regarded by the World Bank as the most unequal city in the world. Donate to anti-corruption: The Dung Beetles amabhungane.org

Sandton, a suburb of Johannesburg, is known as "Africa's Richest Square Mile." It's also located directly next to the extremely poor township of Alexandra, where Nelson Mandela had resided. As a result, Johannesburg is widely considered as the most unequal city in the world. Donate to anti-corruption: The Dung Beetles amabhungane.org

Exactly, corruption in ANC government. Soweto, Alexander, and other black townships are supposed to develop and turn around like Capetown or like Sandton by the ANC government, but instead, ANC government adopted corrupt habits from their fellow undeveloped extremely corrupted African countries and ANC politicians are engaging in embezzling public funds purported to transform all these black townships to become modern cities like Capetown. Shame on ANC black leadership.

There is an influx of people as their elected leaders squander their future through massive fraud and their local economies collapse. The areas they settled in were historically stormwater ponding areas and as a child 80% of these areas did not exist. The sudden demand for area to settle far outweighs available resources. Most friends from the Eastern Cape I speak to say they prefer the Eastern Cape, but there are no opportunities and they are forced to migrate in search of opportunity. This beckons the question: What did the ANC do with all the trillions of rands they supposedly managed over the past 30 years they (mis) managed the county. All I see is an overburdened tax base with an eye watering rich economic elite and your voters scrambling to fend for themselves. Even the president, former president and their friends and family have become billionaires in the past 30 years. Money that could have changed the lives of millions of deserving recipients have cleverly been stolen through mass tender fraud. Imagine the economic impact the creation of a mega city full of opportunity could have on people in the eastern cape. So many do not want to leave their family and stay in such challenging circumstances in undeveloped areas, but are forced by the corrupt elite.

When Afrikaners was refused entry into the English University of Cape Town, the farmers worked hard and build the magnificent Stellenbosch University. They did not burn down English statues, or called the Union Jack hate speech. They took what they learned from the English, and improved on it. In 1900 there was one million white people, and four million black people. Now we have four million white people, and 60 million black people. Excluding the ten million undocumented immigrants from all over Africa. There is nowhere any town can cope with such a population explosion. Transkei is ill populated, because the black migrants move to white areas to find work. No work in Transkei. The ANC government is the biggest land owner in South Africa, but they can not manage anything. The people from Kayamandi received housed for free. Then they build tin shacks onto it, moved into the shacks, and renst the brick house out to Zimbabwean immigrants. So the locals make just enough money from social welfare and rent. No need to work.

Job reservation in Western Cape? Access to higher education and proper good quality education for our people? You know damn well there was discrimination for people of colour yet you talk about farmers building a university in Stellenbosch on who's land? do you know that the native people of the area like coloureds and black people needed to be uprooted and settled in undesirable areas so that white people could claim Stellenbosch like the rest of SA during that time?

@@jongindlebe5176 The people in Kayamandi reside there, and they have a house or smallholding in Transkei. They call it their ancestral land. They work here, because there are work here. There is no work in Transkei, because their governmnet is corrupt. Kaymandi also has a lot of Zimbabwean people living there. Current laws make it illegal for me to live in Pongololand, close to Jozini. The pass laws has expired in 1993. It is now 2024.

I am going to say something that is perhaps upsetting and controversial. The government and the people who run it, are a representation of the majority of the people of the nation. If the majority of people are corrupt then, the government will be corrupt. If the majority of people steal, then the government will steal. If the people constantly blame the government for their living conditions and environment, then the government will blame its citizens and previous regimes for their failures to build and deliver an industrious nation that is fair and harmonious for all. The first act to your salvation is to change the way you think.

The government has failed its people (obviously), the vast majority of Sandton is privately funded (Roads, Street lights or anything Gov are a mess there also), but the people must look after their turf and not vandalise it in ALL areas. In SA they burn the University over Uni Fees.... how can this be constructive? The copper theft is crippling their own people. Ultimately its in the peoples hands. The neoliberal policies have destroyed our country no cap. It's not only about the education but globalisation has made sure to further suppress the poor and continue to fatten the pockets of the elites. I just pray my community could seek aid amongst themselves instead of looking to the government because clearly we've been failed multiple times. Alexandra is worth more than a 'project', how can we be the 'source' of labour to these surrounding business districts and still be underdeveloped and highly unemployed? The future is even scarier because the youth is even slowly giving in to the negative psychological effect of the visible difference between us and Sandton. Unfortunately we've fallen victim to the brutal reality of capitalism and South Africa as a whole needs to remove the economic imbalance from the roots by having honest leaders who are capable of managing society and handling resource.

Honestly the government does take care of people living in townships, the government builds free housing for these people, they don't pay water bills, sewage and bin disposal. It's honestly completely up to them to leave the settlements they built when they migrated from rural areas to the town. Although some where placed there during apartheid era. People who live in places like camps bay worked hard to be there, they pay for their own things. And it's clearly a modern place. When they say that the government doesn't take care of them its a lie because camps bay people basically pay for their water , sewage, bins and bought their own houses...come on...
