Glad I found this! your explanation is wonderful. I have some pennies right next to the house that I’ve done well for years, but we’re in the fire danger are so they say nothing next to the house. I wanted to make sure when I transplanted them I gave them the best chance to thrive in a new location, I feel more confident now
Can I dig up and divide in fall ….keep in basement and plant in spring
@@PoopCat-z7z I would recommend that you dig and divide in the fall and replant at that time. It gives the peony a chance to settle in before it starts growing in the early spring. You could plant it in a pot and leave the pot outside this winter - I do that so I have them potted and ready to sell in the spring. I do water the roots in once they are planted in the pot and after the pot freezes solid, I tip it on its side to ensure no ice forms on the top of the soil in the pot. You could then plant the peony in the spring. I just didn't think the peony roots will survive without soil and moisture in your basement.
I have a "Friendship" peony that was planted several years ago, but still only has three stalks. It has bloomed though. I'm thinking it's been planted too deep, and/or in poor quality soil (heavy MN glacial clay). Should I dig it up and replant with better soil back in the same space? Leave it alone? Other?
@@markwheeler202 At this point, I would consider digging it up, amending the soil and replanting. I have access to well-composted cow manure which is a great amendment to the soil when it's heavy clay. If the peony is planted near a tree, that could be the problem since the peony roots do not like competing with the tree roots. It will also need a good amount of sunlight so if it's a shady spot that could be the problem. I'm not familiar with Friendship, but I do have some peonies that grow very slowly. I'll be digging and dividing my peonies later this month so you're thinking about changes for your peony at the right time. Good luck!
A cordless hedge trimmer works wonders in cutting your peonies back in the fall you should invest in one. We have about 60 to 70 ft of running length of peony around our house and it simplifies it greatly.
Do you have any for sale this year?
The peonies bloomed early this year so the peonies we have left in pots will not bloom again until next year. But we do have about 15 peonies in pots that are for sale at $25 each.
@@douglascrane4397 what are the names?
Thank you! Wonderful demonstration!
Beautiful flowers and this year my peony flowers started to bloom in Mother's Day I had 2 beautiful flower looks like your white peony(our peony plant is 20 years old and I have lot of flowers)and I did buy today on May 18 2023 in meijer a new peony light pink plant and I will be ready to plant in my garden. Thanks you for your information all about flowers and plants.
Thanks you so much for your video I did learn with you how to divide my peony plant that have 20 years old and today in meijer store i did buy one peony light pink plant. We are living in Indiana and I learning how to split my white peony plant.
I have several peonies planted in an area. I planted them in 2017 however only one bloomed this year. I think that I planted them to deep should I dig them up this fall and replant them? I'm going to plant them the way your video guides on transplanting peonies When I purchased them they were three to five eyed plants. One of the plants flowered the following Spring it had a couple of blooms. I noticed that when they break dormancy and leafs out the plant looks as if it's barely above the surface.
If you planted them in 2017, the plants should have worked through any planting depth issues by now. Are they competing with tree roots where they're planted? Peonies don't "share" well - they like their own sunny spot. I also spoke with another person who cut off all the peony foliage after they bloomed - that foliage is what nurtures next year's leaves and buds so it's essential to leave the foliage in place, preferably until fall. But if you do think they're planted too deep, it's a good job to do this fall.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful peonies. I live in Georgia in growing zone 8a or 8b depending upon the weather. I took have peonies in my garden. They start to bloom the first week of April they rarely bloom until Mother's Day. If the temperatures are cool during their blooming season they are magnificent. If it's warm their blooms fade& the petals start to fall off of the plants. I've seen them growing about 30 miles further North from my home and they seem to thrive better because of the zone temperatures. I drove around the area this Spring admiring other people gardens whose peonies were on glorious display!!
Thank you, very informative. Glad I found you. PA/Zone 7
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing!!
If I divide my 15-year-old peony now in fall, which I would like to do, will it bloom next spring?
So sorry for the late reply. You will set back your peony if you divide it. Let's say you divide it into 4 good-sized pieces and replant the 4 pieces. You'll have a good shot at getting some flowers next spring because you're planting plenty of roots to support the growth of flowers next year. But if you divide it into several small pieces, you may have to wait a year or two to see flowers again - you really won't have the root mass to support lots of flowers for a couple of years. Peonies take time to settle in and get established so they can support all those huge blooms. Good luck!
Can they be divided on the ground? I have some clumps that are growing wide onto a pathway and just want to make them narrower by splitting them but leaving half on the ground. Is late September-early October a good time to do this?
I have narrowed them up before. I only dig up the part that is crowding other things and leave the rest of the plant in the ground. September and October are great months to do this because we're cooling off. Here in Michigan, I try to get all my fall digging, dividing, and planting dine by mid October so the plants have a little time to root in before it gets cold.
@@douglascrane4397 wonderful. I really appreciate your advice!
What if you just want to get enough out for a friend, and not move the whole plant?
I've tried just driving a spade through the plant to get a piece, but it doesn't typically go well. I end up with lots of fractured roots, none of which are very big. That method does allow you to leave the main plant undisturbed so that's an advantage because the plant doesn't have to recover from a big transplanting shock. I prefer digging it all up and then I can break it into pieces. Either method works, but if it's a small piece of the root with just 2-3 eyes, your friend may have to wait a couple of years to see flowers.
Great tip. Thank you, I'll try it in the Spring.
I'm ready to transplant my peony patch this fall. They've declined because a tree was planted next to them, and it has grown enough to shade the patch for a few years. When I dig them up, with I find any white eyes, when they have not bloomed for a few years? Thank you for all your shared information.
It's good that you're going to move the peonies - they don't like the shade and their roots don't like competing with tree roots. You should see white/pink buds on your roots. I'm not sure how much they'll bloom the first year after transplanting, especially since they've been shaded for a while. But you'll be amazed how fast they settle in to their new spot, and you'll have blooms for years and years. Good luck with the transplanting this fall!
Thanks for all the information you've put on youtube!!
Thank you for a very clear, concise and informative video. I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and expertise.
I enjoyed that, thank you. If closer I would bring you a coffee and donuts and have the same conversation in person. If one gardens, grows or farms one likes to learn and see how others solve the issues of the endeavor. Again thank you for the sharing of the video, much appreciated.
The audio of this is very poor.
Hi Doug, I'm not a Michigan grower, but a BIG hello to you from California! Thank you for sharing your video! Would love to see more videos on your flowers.
I've just discovered and subscribed to your channel. Love your flower garden...so jealous of your peonies❣ I enjoyed how thorough you are with explaining things. Thank you for sharing your video!
Hi, this was very informative and I will be transplanting peonies this fall thank you. Pro tip for your TH-cam channel, maybe change it from your full name to the name of your farm? Provides marketing and privacy in one :-)
Thanks for the suggestion. I've changed the name of the TH-cam site. Makes more sense!
Great video. Is May (now) to late to divide?
I divided some last year in May, and they didn't look great that summer. They look great this year. So if you divide now, the plants survive with some watering and care, but they won't likely look good until next year.
@@douglascrane4397 thanks!
It's harder to judge the depth for bare root plants in store packs or to see the eyes, any advise on the planting depth fo them please
All the resources say to plant the eyes 1-2 inches below the surface of the soil. Very hard to judge this! If you get the depth wrong, fear not because the peony is resourceful and will grow new eyes (buds) at the proper depth so that it can bloom.
so glad i found this channel. i planted two peonys too close and now they are over grown.. i will definetly take then out.. seperate and re plant in my yard..
Thank you so much for your help.
Thank you for showing me how to split my peonies. I live in Michigan and I have a very old white peony that was from my mother and also have a large deep pink one . I've been wanting to split them but the weather has been really cold late this year. Now both plants are a good 8-12 in.growth and can see from your video that it is too late to try to split them safely. I will wait and follow your video in September and give my grand daughter some then to plant in her garden.
Cool. thanks for the tips on the Karl Forester. (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)
😊
Thank you, I love videos about peonies ☺️
Can I do this in the spring, when it first starts coming up?
You can, but the transplants will not do much the first year. By dividing peonies in the fall, you give the transplants a little time to settle in while they're not actively growing. You stress the transplant a little less with fall division. Whether you dig/divide/move in spring or fall, you'll likely have to wait a year or two for the peony to have the root system and energy to really crank out flowers again. I divide a few each fall leaving the rest of the peonies to continue the flower show in the spring.
@@douglascrane4397 Thank you!

What companion plants that goes well w/ peonies that will begin to bloom just as peonies blooms start to fade.
Heliopsis, shasta daisies, bee balm, and coreopsis follow the peonies. Hibiscus flower even later in the season.
Do you have peony bulbs for sale now
We pot up the peonies we dig in September and sell them at our farm in the spring and early summer. I have had a few customers who want to buy the peonies in the fall, but again, we only sell them at our farm. I just planted some new peonies I got from Van Engelen, a company located in Connecticut - they will mail the roots to you and their prices are very reasonable.
I was getting anxious when you starting digging it up😬. I’ve done this many times and it’s always anxiety provoking but peonies are pretty tough and resistant. Every one I’ve ever moved have done fine.
When do you water?
Thank You. Am about to move house and have a peony I want to take. So interesting. We certainly do learn something new every day!
So helpful, much appreciated!:) 🌱
Thank you. I have three large peonies that came with the house - at least 15 years old, probably more. I've wanted to divide them for years to get them to grow together as more of a hedge. Would 1.5 foot spacing work if I keep 8+ eyes on each?
I use 1.5-2 foot spacing, but I like my peonies close together. If you prefer some space between the plants, then go with 3 foot spacing.
@@douglascrane4397 thank you
Do you have any impatiens ?
We have no more impatiens for this growing season.
price for Peonies ? 😍😍😍😍🌸
Doug, what do you do for fertilizer and also thrips?
We use cow manure for fertilizer, but we do add some nitrogen through the drip irrigation periodically. I have good luck handling thrips in glads by dusting the bulbs with sevin dust when I store them in late October.

Thanks Doug. I was wondering how to plant my poppies. Now I know 👍🙂
Good advice on the twine run very low to the ground, I don't think last year I had a low enough string and they didn't climb as well as I wanted. Will try it your way now.
Thanks for the video. I'm planting my sweet peas up soon in the UK. You should do videos on your favourite plants e.g. evergreens, drought tolerant, low maintenance, colourful, long flowering, water and shade loving, etc. Also, have you done a tour of your farm shop? To advertise it and show viewers which plants etc you sell.
That is so generous 7-8 eyes!! You have lucky customers. America really seems to love peonies, perhaps even more than here in the UK.
Thank you for your instruction, really clear :) Subscribed.
