Yaht Abroad
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 ต.ค. 2021
Hi, I'm Yaht! Welcome to my TH-cam channel. At Yaht Abroad, we discuss a bit of everything, such as my experience of leaving the U.S., a place where I was born and raised and love dearly, and reasons why I moved abroad. We also document our travels and the search for the place we'd like to settle down for a while. We also discuss financial advice, lessons learned are 20+ years in corporate America; things I would tell my younger self and young people in order to "make it in life". In essence, I'm just documenting this journey we call life. So tag along, and I hope you find this content entertaining, informative, and/or useful.
One Year in Portugal! Updates on our life in Portugal as walk the amazing coastline near Lagos.
My family and I moved to Portugal approximately one year ago from Florida in the US. We moved to the Silver Coast, near Caldas da Rainha and things didn't quite go according to plan. A lot happened during this first year, which included trips to Porto, Lisbon, and Lagos in the Algarve. It even included a move! We've learned so much during this year and I'd like to share some of my learning with you. So this is just a brief update on first year in Portugal.
I know a lot of American's are considering a move to Portugal after the 2024 U.S. Presidential election. I hope that you find the information in my videos helpful, in which you use the information within, to make an informed decision as to if Portugal is right for you. Until the next one...you all take care.
Lastly, this is the first of my walk and talk series, in which I showcase the coastline around Lagos, the city, or surrounding countryside, while discussing various topics. Because one of the things I do enjoy is hiking. So you'll see quite a few videos of me on trails in the coming future.

You re so wrong
It's traditional Portugal, what you looking for Miami beach lolz
@@MegaEssexboy1 What did I say that was wrong?
@@MegaEssexboy1 I conducted 2 years of research before I took my exploration trip to Portugal. I never said I was looking for Miami Beach. I’m a Floridian and I don’t even like Miami Beach. My impressions of Burgau and Selema were based on my experience of actually spending time there.
We just got a house in Óbidos. I’m 60 and from the cold and rainy Belgium. For us this a real improvement. But I understand that this place is not for everyone. Lucky for us it’s a nice place to retire. 😊
@@peterhaagen8506 That’s so awesome! I’m happy for you. We absolutely love Obidos. It’s one of the highlights of the Silver coast.
Great video but I’m worried the expats might all be the trumpsters who moved over past 4 yrs. The irony of that!
Florida !!!
Yuck!!!!
@@ElizabethA-y3c Lol 😂 Why yuck?
@@Summer-bo9rw Yes, Florida. Unfortunately, Florida isn’t what it used to be. It’s taken a turn for the worst in every sense.
Great choice. I hope to run into you all in lagos one of these days. Happy new year
@@peterferreira1025 Likewise! Happy New Year to you as well. You’ll definitely see me out and about, exploring all the nooks and crannies of Lagos. 😀
If you voted for crooked biden stay in America We don't need moonbats in Portugal
Yaht, what is your opinion on the healthcare in Portugal compared to the USA ?
Great question! The healthcare here overall is good. Not great, but good. However, the cost is significantly less compared to the U.S. We mostly go to private clinics/hospitals when we have issues (we have private insurance which is $290/mo for a family of 4). We've had to use the public system a couple times; and once we got over the language barrier, the care was good. We've have several emergency room visits and on average we've had to pay out of pocket €45 - €60 here in Portugal. 🤯 We've had similar emergency room visits for the kids in the U.S. and we had to pay close to $3000 out of pocket because we hadn't met our deductible yet (and I had really good employer sponsored insurance!).
@ thank you so much !
Great video !!
Thank you! 😁 Just hope this information is useful for folks considering a move to Portugal.
I feel your vibe and you weren’t feeling it !! Thank you for your honesty and knowledge on this location. Really glad you touched on the wet ,dampness, and cold weather of this location.
Yes, it was a huge issue for us. We had the dehumidifier running 24/7 - 365 in Caldas. And because the weather is cooler up there, the damp air made us cold to our bones! Plus we were constantly cleaning mold as well. It's something hardly anyone talks about.
@ the mold issue is a major issue for me because I have allergies . I’m really glad you mentioned it in this video. Thank you ! I’m really glad I found your channel .
@@travelergirl49w53 Completely understand. My son has allergies as well and so it was fight to keep the moisture and mold at bay. But it's just something to consider and note if you're considering a move to the Silver Coast. I would recommend to be selective regarding your housing. Make sure it's an A or B energy rating; or the A/C has a dehumidifier function. Because you will need it in the winter. Or as a last resort, run the dehumidifiers.
I do have a question about Lagos. Do you need the dehumidifier for the Algarve ?
Yes, but only during the rainy season, of which I didn't know the Algarve had one. It started in October and has slowed down for the last week or so. We drove down to Lagos from Caldas in January to escape the cold and rainy weather and noticed that everything was so green in Lagos! Now we know why. 😂 But yes, we've been running the dehumidifier since the beginning of November. However, it could just be our rental. We've visited other rentals and homes and didn't feel any dampness in the air.
@ ok good to know . Thank you 🙏🏻
@@travelergirl49w53 Anytime!
Very informative information. Thank you for your honesty about CALDAS .
You're welcome. If you're considering the Silver Coast, I would recommend to check out other areas. We really liked Nazare and it had a nice old town. I would also recommend Lourihna or Torres Vedras. Visually, they look better than Caldas and the housing is significantly cheaper than Caldas. I truly have yet to pinpoint why the Caldas area on the Silver Coast is so expensive; very close to Algarve prices for recently built/moderately insulated homes.
@ I think the mold and dampness would definitely be a problem for me with the Silver Coast. Back to the drawing board 😅
Totally agree! I was totally unimpressed by Caldas!! There are different micro climates in Portugal and for us we found an incredible place just 30 km from Lisbon center and just south of the 'silver coast'! Beautiful view, 3 minutes to a Town with EVERYTHING and 15 minutes to a bigger city...Torres Vedras! We love it here!!
I'm totally happy that I'm not the only one who feels this way about Caldas!! 😁 Torres Vedras was on high on our list. The only thing that stopped us was the international school there. At the time, their "international" curriculum wasn't accredited, so we didn't even give Torres Vedras a full chance. What I did love about Torres Vedras was that the housing costs were significantly cheaper than Caldas and it has the private hospital CUF there as well. But with your additional feedback on living near Torres Vedras, I'll come up and check it out!

Hi Yaht, Marianne from the San Joaquin Valley, California. Thank you for this video. Love the work you've done with the shots of nature. My city now is Fresno and it is Ugly. It has made me aware of how important what I look at every day is to me, when I moved here from Los Angeles. I've watched Josie's work and wondered why she didn't film a better looking part of the city? Now I know. I have done research on Calda da Rainha and was going to scout it out. I don't drink much alcohol at all so the festivals would not be my thing. To be able to live near the ocean in California is tremendously expensive. I will be looking for more of you and you family having adventures. :)
Hi Marianne. I hope all is well. Many thanks for the love. Luckily, Caldas da Rainha is only 15 mins from the coast. We love living near the ocean as well. So you can enjoy your time on the coast and only drive into Caldas when you need something. I always want to make sure people know about the aesthetics of Caldas because some people are really sensitive to that and could affect their mood. Just like how people are affected by not seeing the sun for long periods of time. Once again, thank you for your comment. If you ever need any information on Caldas, please feel free to reach out.
If you have any questions or comments on the details of how to move abroad, let me know.

Lolol dude thinks the USA is dangerous its almost a spit in the face to those of us who came from actually violent places
Well where did you come from? It sounds like you left and tried to find greener pastures. Plus, I never said the U.S. was the most violent place on earth (there are only 31 countries more violent than the U.S. Meaning there are 131 countries safer than the U.S.! I'm saying for such a developed country that tells itself that it's number in everything, the safety in the U.S. is abysmal.
Where are you now in Europe
We're currently in Portugal.
All US problems stem from greed and corruption. Ish is hitting the fan soon.
100%!!!
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 The video is very well done and interesting !! 😊
Thank you very much! I've been wanting to do this video for quite some time. Everyone I speak with here in Portugal always finds this topic so fascinating and jaw dropping.
Hi Yaht, just subscribed. What a great father you are, putting your family first and moving (which couldn't have been a quick decision) to a country that will give your kids the best opportunities. They'll be fluent in a second language, able to enjoy European culture and food and with the research you've done - the safety index for example - your children will likely grow up to be in awe of the decisions you've made. Hopefully your influence rubs off on them and they eventually follow your lead with their own families when they're of an age that they're living independently. I've always found it peculiar that socialised healthcare isn't something that America has embraced, from the outside, it looks as if 'socialism' is a dirty word over the pond, and a significant proportion of people have never questioned it; a healthy population is a productive population and are therefore more likely to be able to work and pay tax, making the cost less of a national burden. in 2022 the US spent approximately $13,493 on each citizen for health provision, Germany spent (on a 2023 report) 5,699 Euros per person - so effectively the US system sees them spending far more per person than countries who have socialised healthcare and treats people equally. Yes, we pay more tax, but we don't have to traverse the challenges of insurance, co-pay or exclusions.
Thank you! Yes, it was a very difficult decision; one that a lot of Americans think about, but never take action on. You're right about our kids. We're astounded that they've picked up Portuguese already; with my son become my little translator. 😀 You're also right regarding the word "Socialism" in the U.S. It's so stigmatized and it's akin to The Scarlet Letter! No one wants to be labeled this or have any policies that could be labeled as such (except for Senator Bernie Sanders). Regarding the cost of healthcare in the U.S., if only the government would really take this seriously, they would significantly reduce the national burden. They already have a test case of how they were able to reduce the cost by controlling the price (Medicare and Obamacare). However, the pharmaceutical lobby here is America is probably the most powerful; and these companies would like to keep making as much money as possible. So these companies keep lining the pockets of our politicians and ultimately, any measure to really reduce the cost and national burden on healthcare is shutdown. Sadly, this is what happens when big business integrates into politics.
@@yahtabroad Hopefully your content gets to reach a far wider audience and serves to educate people who might be conflicted about the best thing for their own families. I'm in the UK (so am amongst the first to agree that no country is perfect!) but things aren't that bad here that I'd want to relocate, but equally we don't have the jingoistic approach to the land we occupy, so we are as quick to note errors in the governing administration as we are to areas of national pride. Regardless of the political leanings of people in the UK, free-at-the-point-of-use healthcare is something that crosses political opinion. Also, I note that you said your wife was French, so tri-lingual children will have quite the career options when they're old enough to enter the workplace. I wish you all well.
I truly appreciate it! 100% agree that no country is perfect. We also considered the UK as well (it was a potential spot for me to transfer my job). Many thanks for your insights on life in the UK. I wish you the very best as well.
If you've left the U.S., or considering leaving the U.S. what were / are your reasons?
😮
This had to be said, as this is the truth about America! I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way. Other videos of people leaving the U.S. I feel just gloss over these issues as they don't want to ruffle feathers, so to speak.
Love this!!! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. 🎉
