Sailing Salty Heaven - 23/01/22 Sailing to Vivian Bay, Kawau Island, NZ
Salty Heaven sailing to Kawau Island, New Zealand on 23rd January 2022.
Salty Heaven (aka SHI) is my 17' lug rigged yawl.
Conceived in Australia around 1999 by Mikey Floyd he built her by hand without using power tools (including hand sewing the sails).
Despite her traditional working boat lines and the emphasis on simplicity she is a true thoroughbred with sparkling performance and impeccable balance - even when hard-pressed the tiller never requires more than fingertip pressure - there's the required touch of weather helm but bearing away rather than rounding up in a gust of wind results in instant acceleration thanks to her light weight, slippery underwater shape and powerful rig.
In addition to the hand sewn sails she carries two sweeps (oars) for one of two rowing stations (plus a sculling rowlock) and an electric outboard (three batteries and an on-board charger in lockers double as trimming ballast and good for several hours of motoring or for powering nav/house lights and other devices), there is also an automatic electric bilge pump.
There are two foam blocks for buoyancy under the side thwarts. All bare wood is oiled rather than varnished for simplicity of maintenance. There are covers for trailering and for camp cruising and the floors can be lifted to provide a half- or full-width sleeping platform.
You can read all about Salty Heaven in a 5-page article in the February 2004 issue #176 of Wooden Boat Magazine.

This is a video of me sailing my Windrider Rave hydrofoiling trimaran back in 2010. It is pretty boring (unless you into that sort of thing) because I was doing everything single handed and trying to film at the same time so I didn't have much opportunity for fancy cinematics. I will try to follow this up with some more exciting videos the next time I take her out.\ A
200327 Auckland 360 from North Head, Devonport

This is a quick 360 degree panorama I took just the other day from the top of North Head, Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand. I have slowed the video down somewhat and used video stabilisation software to make it a bit smoother - I hope that doesn't detract. There's nothing much to it except that you will see very few people, cars, boats and aeroplanes in this usually-buzzing cityscape; that's be...
180809 A Mohope Circuit

Here's a video of a short walking circuit in a little known corner of the North Pennines which offers relatively easy walking, easy route-finding (in good visibility) and views across some of the beautiful, unspoiled, empty scenery that this area has to offer (again: in good visibility!!). The route I have described is roughly 14 km/8.5 - 9 miles though I haven't measured it in detail. There is...
180330 Walking the Queen Charlotte Track, Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand

Here's a video of a walking trip down the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds at the north end of New Zealand's South Island. One of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Queen Charlotte Track passes through various places that Captain Cook and his crews visited on their three journeys through the South Pacific in 1769-1780. I found it quite spooky treading exactly the same ground that you...

Here's a video of my walk of Alta Via 1 in Northern Italy late September-early October 2019. I wouldn't claim to be a huge expert but this is the best walk I have ever done in Europe. It is the second time I have done it, the last being back in the '80s - it is much busier now but just as good for all that! The highlights are: fantastic scenery, confronting history, excellent huts, brilliant we...

Here's a video of my trip along the Routeburn & Caples Tracks in Fiordland National Park, South Island, New Zealand. The Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks alongside walks like the Tongariro Crossing and the Milford Track. The Caples Track runs roughly parallel to the Routeburn and is a useful way of completing an almost-circuit back to near the starting point. To get there & b...

      I only know of two in existence: this one and another in Oz. The plans are available for free though so there’s nothing stopping you…!

      She’s certainly a great boat and has been lovingly cared for, I still can hardly comprehend the thought, work & skill that must have gone into designing & building her and sewing her sails. Sadly not in my ownership any longer but I am sure her new owner is up to the task.

      @@Stobb0 not surprised ! My Oughtred Fulmar is feeling pretty plain at the mo’. Original owner built her Bermudian rigged and I’ve been looking at lug yawl as a much better single handed rig. Will look out for more sailing salty heaven. Cheers

    how hard is to get a spot to camp for the night during this hike?

    • @Stobb0
      @Stobb0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Santosh, thanks for your question! The answer depends on exactly what you mean by a “spot to camp”: if you mean a a campsite, then the answer is “next to impossible” because there are none that I know of along the route (though some of the huts may allow you to camp and use their facilities); if you mean can you find a spot to put down a tent or bivvy bag near the route then “yes, that would be easy”. On my first trip I camped in a small 1.5 person tent and had no difficulty hiding away in that. Last time I took a bivvy bag but stayed in the huts. I am not sure what the regulations about camping are but as long as you pack out what you pack in, take care with fire and leave no marks you should be OK if you are discreet. Water is available at the huts even if you don’t stay at them. Hope that helps.

    • @ShanSubedi
      @ShanSubedi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Stobb0 I indeed meant only putting tent for the night since there is no campingsite at all. I do follow "leave no trace". Thank you for helpful info. looking forward to it.
