    I think the reason 2022 looks so good is that you're doing fixed contract size, as you compound the same $pnl means lower % return.

      Correct that amplifies it. I also like to look at premium capture which is the same when trading a 1 lot and that was higher in 2022 as well. The PCR is the main premise for my thought. But when comparing the front half of 2022 to the back half the way it was back tested you are absolutely correct

      It is pretty efficient there is richer theta in power hour but the other side of theta is gamma the main driver of slippage. In general i think there is a good risk to reward of slippage vs the decay you get by not having orders that go to far ITM during power hour. In my experience over 1000's of trades iron flys have $0.45 to $0.55 of slippage during that time while Iron condors are $0.20 to $0.25

    Glad this video was randomly suggested to me! I too dabble with 0dtes, my sweet spot is SPX IC in the last 30mins with a 50% SL and leave to expiry. Only downside with TT is i cant set market stop orders so have to watch and close manually. I find it more consistant, less DD than opening at market open. Might look again into some of your ideas though. Did you say in the video you average 40% returns per year?

    • @zerodaymark
      @zerodaymark หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah i find the closer we get to expiry the more accurately vol is priced. Yeah 40% i like to also peg it to a 90 day quarterly target of 10% so we prioritize consistency within the strategies

    For perspective, from Jan 2016 to August 2024 the S&P returned over 175%. So, over the period of evaluation for the first two trades, they lost to the market, quite handily. They also incurred fees and taxes associated with short term trading, and he suggests a monthly subscription to a trading resource. I appreciate finding new sources of potential revenue, and its always nice to have strategies that you can put to use in a sideways trading market, though. The first two trades show that IV is typically overpriced/selling for credit usually earns more than the losses incurred from oversized moves, but its also showing that you can usually use a lot less time/effort and beat most active traders by just buying the market.

    • @zerodaymark
      @zerodaymark หลายเดือนก่อน

      The first trade used a fixed 1 contract lot which requires only 10% of the buying power / account value and doubled the account. If we used the entire account excluding compounding it would have returned 1000% vs the S&P's 175%. In addition to this it's largest drawdown was only -9.6% comparative to the S&P which had a -33% in 2020 and the -22% in 2022 so risk adjusted and capital efficient it has value to evaluate if the additional investment in time and automation makes sense for an individual. All of the commissions, fees, slippage and cost of executing are included in the back test.

    • @benharsch9340
      @benharsch9340 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@zerodaymark Your literal first reaction is to imply that a 100% account allocation towards a single strategy would be appropriate? I think 10% is high for any single position, but seeing a relatively reasonable max drawdown like that, 10% might be acceptable. I appreciate hearing about strategies that are effective in a sideways trading market, I'm not opposed to these sorts of trades. I was just providing perspective as the strategies did not outperform the market with a (skeptically) reasonable allocation size, and these were the scenarios that you wanted to present. I fully believe that trades like these make sense during certain market conditions, but I don't think you need a bot/subscription/guru to perform them.

    • @zerodaymark
      @zerodaymark หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@benharsch9340 Yeah holding SPY is a good allocation and this trade you can easily do with no bot you would just have to log on for 10 minutes in the morning. An option trade or two is nice because they are generally more diversified than than holding IWM & QQQ. It is also nice to have a strategy with no overnight risk. The vast majority of diversity benefit is from 1 to 2 strategies.

    The one thing I don’t like about 0 DTE at least what I’ve experienced is when it doesn’t work it really doesn’t work, and there’s no time for the trade to work (if it’s going to) I’m actually more comfortable even trading momentum penny stocks rather than 0 DTEs although I do mess with 0 DTEs I feel I need some practice. Agree with the other commentor! Great content. How do you balance recent market behaviour and the strategy parameters. For example, a test from 2020 to 2024 shows positive results, but is struggling in 2024. When the target credit or entry time is updated, not by much, the performance for 2024 is significantly improved, but the past DD is larger / lower MAR. Overall, its still very positive from 2020 with similar PL In this instance, my sense is to shift to the new parameters and monitor performance. If the DD and Winrate dont align, perhaps switch back to the parameters that worked further back to see if there is a resurgence of performance. Thoughts?

      I like to test back to 2016 forward and see a positive return in each year. I do expect some trades to under and over perform. I am more concerned with consistent returns more than massive P/L streaks with less certainty. As long as the trade continues to have a positive P/L over 90 day periods I will continue to trade it even if it underperforms the past. Once the trade has gone through a 90 day period of negative returns I would then ditch that trade

      Haha yes 99% of people lose money trading options. Does not mean with the right tools we can't be that 1%. The average American is 40 lbs overweight $10k in debt and has less than 1 close friend. Does not mean we have to accept those standards

    Well done ! As I was reviewing different ways to hedge throughout the course of the year, I was regularly met with people telling me it was a waste of funds and just to suck it up. Thankfully, I went against their advice given the changing market environment and current geopolitical events. I actually made money this week. Thanks for sharing this Mark. Great content as always.

      Yeah we have to think geometric vs arithmetic returns the hedge doesn't even need to breakeven to lessen your drawdowns and improve your compounding. You can actually loose money on the hedge and make more money in the long term from it

I will be uploading content that will answer your questions in great detail through the Newby learns to trade 0 DTE series. So stay tuned for that. For this particular trade though this was a iron condor, where you manage both the call and put side separately. We will go deeper into what this exact trade looks like in the Newby Learns 0 DTE series.

    This is defenitely a thorough layout of deciding on a trade plan. I have jumped into trades after a good backtest results but have questioned myself when the live trading and backtest begin to underperform. Deciding on a pause point before begining the trade definitely is a systematic way of executing a trade

    Great practice to put the back test right in the bot notes to reference daily. During drawdown, seeing the backtest results will instill confidence in not wanting to interfere with the trade plan

    Thank you for the education Mark. Could you in any of your future video dive deeper into your process behind selecting a single entry vs. diversifcaiton? Like, for a IC strategy if the options were to select 1 entry that has the highest PCR vs 3 combined entries with a lower PCR but also lower drawdown, how would you decide? Also, give that it is a "backtest" - if choosing a single entry, dosen't match live results close to 95% backtest when would you adjust the strategy?

    • @zerodaymark
      @zerodaymark 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah will do i would adjust it after a few weeks. I expect the entry premium to vary day to day but over the course of a dozen trades you will collect more or less win loss will almost always be the same or better if you back test correctly

    If there was a star to mark this as the most importnat video of the series, I would do it. I am a competent individual in my daily job and in other fields but I have seen it does not translate directly into success in option selling. I began 1 year ago with MEIC and my mental game is still a work in progress. I am going to start using the incantation to better me Here is mark's statement: "I quant [name] see, hear, feel, and know that I will create an abundance of wealth through the short-dated indexed options market. I have cultivated an unwavering conviction to meet the standard of execution and compliance with my trading plan, regardless of how I feel and what life throws at me. I’m data-driven and know that success is not the P&L on a day-to-day basis. The real success is executing per plan with a 95% accuracy to the back-tested plan. Small daily losses are a valuable driver of making money on a monthly basis. I perform to the best of my abilities and achieve my mission of making [goal] a week and doubling my account from [goal] over the course of the next [timeframe] months through data simplicity and execution. I now command my subconscious mind to guide me to serve and contribute at an ever-expanding level, showing others the road map to financial freedom through my short-dated index off option portfolio. I've put in the work to be exactly where I need to be today to deliver."

    As I am listening, I recollect , Buffetts first rule - never lose money. Mark, when you mention you would add a position if the market is moving in a certain direction, are these bots pre defined using, lets say an indicator like EMA?

    It is an interesting way to think of using profit takes rather than only a stop loss exit as doubling the potential for slippage rather. This year I have definitely witness the impact slippages can be on trade results.

    Hey Mark, thanks so much for sharing this. Incredible interesting, helpful and inspiring! Its great to see the thought process and mechanics behind testing a thesis. I noticed that you tend to target a credit/debit (of the tests I've seen). Why do you use this approach over say delta? Delta feels like a more tangible place to start from (in my mind) as it offers more information upfront (i.e. likely % win). If you have a thesis in mind, where would you start from in terms of a credit or debit? In the ORB High break test for example, I've gone through different deltas and debits. When I'm testing, it tends to be more of a process of elimination, but I'm pretty confident that my starting point could be improved. Would love if you could work through a few examples. Cheers and keep up the great work!

    • @zerodaymark
      @zerodaymark 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I like to use a credit because we trade mechanically and it test better over long periods of time. I have also noticed that between 10-20 delta the same stop multiple has basically the same win rate give or take a % so it is more consistent then collecting 2x the premium when vol is high from a max drawdown vs return perspective. I do some delta trades but they are more for longer duration. I generally like to collect between $0.75 & $2 $1 to $1.5 seems to be a good spot also

      @@backintodaylight I always think the best experience is trading. The way i look at it is trading is playing the game and back testing is practicing. So doing a lot of back testing and live trading at a small size lets you experience what is best for you. It's not so much the most optimal strategy but the one you believe in and can continue to execute on a day in day out basis.
