Added October 2017: The title of this video has always been a bit misleading whoever at the BBC originally named this clip was clearly looking for clicks (although my inadvertent dropping of the question mark for 4 years probably didn't help) as the guest here, Marcus Chown, is quite specific when he says, "there is no such thing as the force of gravity", not "gravity doesn't exist", as gravity...

  • @jalexandermt
    @jalexandermt 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Now do the same experiment on a 2d surface except make it frictionless and remove outside forces. If the force of gravity didn't exist then any objects on a frictionless surface would remain still. That's not what happens though. Look in your cereal bowl when you're down to about a dozen or so cheerios. What happens? They all pull themselves together and eventually find their way to the edge. This is evidence of the force of gravity and it's measurable. Gravity is directly related to the mass of an object. Everything with mass will produce a force of gravity. Even something as small as a cheerio. Notice how they slowly pull each other in. As the clump gets bigger, their masses combine making a greater force and it will pull the remaining cheerios in faster. Hover your spoon above the milk and you can move the cheerios around using the force of gravity the spoon in your hand has without touching them or the milk. Only a closed minded simpleton could ignore the evidence that's all around us that the force of gravity exists.

    Ok, for all the idiots that think they are outsmarting the guy in the video. This is Einsteins idea, not his. Unless, you guys are smarter than Einstein GRAVITY -" the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass." It doesnt acknowledge space/time. It is defined as a force. Since there is no force, then gravity as defined, does not exist. We arent redefining a word. If you want to redefine it you would say "the process of mass moving along spacetime that has been bent by a larger mass." And deeper, what if gravity IS a force. The force that causes spacetime to bend toward mass.

    Boy, some of the comments here make me weep for humanity. To be fair though, general relativity is not something you can explain in less than 3 minutes, so any thought experiment on it is bound to be flawed. But, just to make it clear, there is no debate if it's either newtonian physics or general relativity, it's the latter. General relativity can explain phenomena concerning gravity that newtonian physics can't explain.

    look at the clouds. best way to explain gravity and planet building. the vapour falls because rain is heavier than vapour. now think of the rain is heavy planets, and gravity makes rain. the clouds operate the same way as planet building in space - some raindrops have more mass than others, etc. the sun is falling to earth and we're falling towards it. but there's a balance which holds us in place... i.e, the moon would move faster if it were closer. it's difficult for too large an objects to collide... you need alot of chaos/more planets. planet building starts in motion. why everything rotates. the moon closer would speed up the rotation of earth, etc. space weighs nothing so it can expand forever. the beginning was extremely heavy as everything was joined as 1 entity. then pushed apart for whatever reason. something decided that the matter had to be broken down into smaller chunks. could be something that just happens in-between oblivions. if you had a clock you'd be waiting nonillions of years for something else. the equivalent to an explosion. space is "nothing" before the something. new rules might allow you to exist as somebody else, because what is deciding your alternative actions. there must be another version of your parents and they had different offspring.

    .....did you all really miss that this was meant to make you look, feel and sound dumb? Gravity isn't a theory....in fact General Relativity is the *Theory* that best explains gravity. The people who made this video assumed you dont know the difference between the scientific definitions of Theory, Law, Hypothesis and Force ......and it seems like they were correct.. Think of it this way: "Scientific laws and theories have different jobs to do. A scientific law predicts the results of certain initial conditions. It might predict your unborn child’s possible hair colors, or how far a baseball travels when launched at a certain angle. In contrast, a theory tries to provide the most logical explanation about why things happen as they do. A theory might invoke dominant and recessive genes to explain how brown-haired parents ended up with a red-headed child, or use gravity to shed light on the parabolic trajectory of a baseball. In simplest terms, a law predicts what happens while a theory proposes why. A theory will never grow up into a law, though the development of one often triggers progress on the other." Gravity doesn't 'predict what will happen' because gravity is not a constant. the gravity on Earth, Mars and the Moon are all different, so, without knowing the variables, you can't make a prediction simply by saying "gravity". Likewise, a theory tells us why things happen....why do things seem to fall towards earth? because matter curves space-time. The people who wrote that title and made this video....assumed their audience would be ignorant to those facts. they would assume you would read the title as "Scientist think gravity isn't even a phenomenon". That's not at all what the man said. also, gravity is not a force.....like inertia. inertia is a property of matter. in a vaccume, objects in motion stay in motion until a force acts upon them....the residual energy is called inertia. there isn't a force, called inertia, propelling the item. "Mercury's orbit, however, did not match that predicted by Newton's Law of Gravitation. Some astrophysicists predicted the existence of another planet (Vulcan) that would explain the discrepancies; however no such planet could be found. When Albert Einstein formulated his theory of general relativity (GR) he turned his attention to the problem of Mercury's orbit and found that his theory added a correction, which could account for the discrepancy. This was the first time that Newton's Theory of Gravity had been shown to be *inexact.* Since then, *general relativity has been acknowledged as the theory that best explains gravity.* In GR, gravitation is not viewed as a force, but rather, objects moving freely in gravitational fields travel under their own inertia in straight lines through curved space-time - defined as the shortest space-time path between two space-time events. From the perspective of the object, all motion occurs as if there were no gravitation whatsoever. It is only when observing the motion in a global sense that the curvature of space-time can be observed and the force is inferred from the object's curved path. Thus, the straight line path in space-time is seen as a curved line in space, and it is called the ballistic trajectory of the object. For example, a basketball thrown from the ground moves in a parabola, as it is in a uniform gravitational field. Its space-time trajectory is almost a straight line, slightly curved (with the radius of curvature of the order of few light-years). The time derivative of the changing momentum of the object is what we label as "gravitational force".

The definition of the Gravity is; a force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth or toward any other physical body having mass. Well, THERE IS NO FORCE, so the word doesn't exist, you can't keep the word and ascribe to it new meaning, no, it's been disproven. It's like taking the word Unicorns (which don't exist), and slapping it on another animal that DOES exist after you find out that unicorns don't exist.

    So all this seawater at the bottom of the globe, where people walk upside down without noticing it, sticks to the earth instead of falling into space because of gravity. It must be the strongest force there is. It should crush us all and yet birds can glide for 5 minutes without clapping their wings at Mount Everest due to the uprising air stream there. So the force of that air stream is so much stronger than gravity with can hold trillions of gallons of water from falling into space? Does that sound logical to you? Now, of course someone has a NASA formula to make it all alright. Nobody can truly understand that formula but people sure can echo it like parrots do.

    • @andrewcarpenter3148
      @andrewcarpenter3148 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you honestly labour under the impression you've made a good argument here? Seriously? Gravity is a fairly weak force because we can override it by jumping up, or scooping up a cup of sea water with your hands. In fact, if there were enough hands, we would be able to scoop up *all* the waters of the ocean. It just so happens that gravity is persistent, whilst the forces we muster by using our muscles are not. Thus water is held to the Earth's surface by gravity, except when it isn't. So yes, the oceans not floating away into space, but birds being able to fly, is entirely logical to me, not least because I've read physics books, many of which predate NASA by hundreds of years. Maybe you should try the same.

    Gravity has no force. It is in a way an illusion. It is relative acceleration driven by expansion of the earth (and all matter) which is driven by a "matter/empty space" density gradient. Density gradients are real. General relativity and bending of space-time is just mystical theory invented 100 years ago at a time when we had only just invented the automobile.

      @@IthratCordwallis And if I can just add this.... just stop and think for a moment.... if a heavy object and light object are accelerated at the same rate and hit the ground at the same time, why is the first answer that so called smart people give, have to be the most ridiculous.... "well, um, err, well gravity is exerting more force and pulling harder on the heavy object via an invisible force that acts through the fourth dimension blah blah blah and injecting a graviton, and consequently blah blah blah which results in the warping of spacetime, blah blah blah blah blah" Are you serious? All that while right before their very eyes every single Newtonian Law of motion is defied. How about just a simple.... "The surface of the earth expands outward and meets them together at the same time." This way NO laws of physics are defied and the exact mechanism is being described. There are two ways that you can feel your weight... you are being pulled or you are being pushed up against. Agree? If being pulled results in the law defying scenario of the objects hitting the ground together and the the push perfectly explains it. Well by process of elimination.... pull must be wrong. Right? I'm not "professor", I am just not illogical and downright silly. An entire entire field of science and an entire industry all from the incorrect interpretation of a concept that a 5 year old would be able to interpret correctly. It really isn't rocket science. The new question that scientists should be pursuing is "What causes the expansion and why does it happen"? We can't sense it because we are part of this overall expansion process since every atom is likely expanding. But we get the big clue by the "push" on our bum while we are sitting down. Wake up man! Wake up everyone!
