Almost! There was a pawn on e4 protecting the knight on d5, and therefore the queen cannot capture. Thank you so much for your comment and I hope this reply has helped clear up any confusion! 😁

But would loosing a queen be a a bad descision if it removes that knight on d5 ? . Also instead of taking the knight on d4 to protect the queen, why didn't black just move it's king to f7 ? Thank you for your replies by the way❤

@@MannatRattan-qs6op Ah I see. While you are right, in that the queen can sacrifice herself to save the game, the puzzle wanted to ensure that you, or anyone completing it, actually understood the idea behind Nd4 which is why black took our knight on d4 rather than the one on d5. In other words, the puzzle creator wanted to make sure you saw mate and not just a hanging knight move which attacked the queen. Good catch though, and I hope this clears everything up. If you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask 😊

Hmmm, nd4 doesn't do anything on its own to guarantee a mate though. I kind of depended on black to surely take my knight on d4 to be able to use my queen and mate the black king.

​@@MannatRattan-qs6op You are correct, there is no forced mate, but we either end up with more material (a queen for our knight) or with checkmate. For sure a funky daily puzzle, but you don't have to depend on black taking on d4 as either way you end up in a winning position.
