"Revolutionaries Love Life (2008)" 47 minute road trip documentary film.
Director: Riaan Hendricks
On a 26 year old motorbike, we took to the road from Rocklands Mitchell's Plain enroute to Figtree in Zimbabwe. We went to search for the remains of a "coloured" freedom fighter believed to have died there. We wanted to return home on-behalf of him.
Our journey, as uncertain and unmapped as can be - took on great meaning when we were told to head off to Cederberg mountains, we'll find Patrick "Blah" Rickets there. Sharing rare skills with our scouts. He could help us.
"I've been told to help you by someone that means a lot to me" - and that's how Patrick unselfishly allowed me access into his family - trying to get to reach my journey's objective.
What was this revolution all about - and what was it really worth it? That's the journey of this film.

The people in the documentary pointing fingers the whole day. All the while being a terrible example to their children. Using and abusing substances in front of their children every day long (probably in the name of a religion which is to worship a sinner man called Haile Sellasie). If you want the cycle of margenilization to stop why continue this with passing it over to your children with a myriad of personal bad habits?? Next thing you know these grown adult people will argue like children . "It's because we are poor"; "We gave been marginilized"; ""we are the disadvantaged people" . . . Always the same dumb mindset. So your children will probably be the same or even worse. Then what is this mindset going to say: "It's the teachers fault. They are only in it for the salaries". Education and the support therof (including moral education) needs to be modelled and starts at home. Currently these people in the documentary are modelling blame shifting and substance abuse to their children.
They might be a bad example from the outside view - but from the inside - dialogue is all they have. They don't want more poverty - and be assured- they don't have the legal means to change their lives. They certainly can't reach in the pockets to reach out for some disposeable income and to move on with life - maybe you can.
Snoekies is massively succesful. There was an amazing bar/restuarant with the fish braais by the old factory - owned and run by a Hangberg family. So sad to see it close during Covid - It would have been a huge success with the tourists. We ALL want a succesful locally owned business. Tourists want an authentic local experience. The oppurtunities are there.
I love this attitude - lets work. Lets create work and opportunity.
