I'm Paul Scott - a UK small caps commentator, investor, and analyst. I've been a professional investor since 2002. My track record in a nutshell? I made £millions between 2002 and 2007, but blew it in the credit crunch in 2008, due to hubris, and a disastrous combination of gearing and illiquidity. So my lessons have been learned the hard way, unfortunately. Still, that has made me a better investor, and a better person, in the long run. Since 2009 I have been gradually rebuilding my investment portfolio.
So my investing approach these days is more cautious, and I pay particular attention to balance sheet strength, and other downside protection. I like Value & GARP (growth at reasonable price) small caps, UK only.
My daily written report on UK small caps can be found here: www.Stockopedia.com/SmallCaps
I enjoy helping other investors, by explaining company finances in an accessible way, and pointing out risky shares.
I NEVER, EVER GIVE ADVICE OR RECOMMENDATIONS. DYOR please.

Paul Scott mystery shops Revolution Bar in Bournemouth, after refit, Jan 2022
I'm a small shareholder in Revolution Bars, which is currently revamping 19 of its bars across the UK. My local Revs (Bou'mth) was tatty, but has just had a refurb, re-opening yesterday. It now looks fantastic! I had some food, and Dry January non-alcoholic drinks, which were all excellent, very impressed. I can see this bar being very popular.

Bournemouth/Ringwood area. Sorry for poor sound quality, I had the top down, so gets a bit noisy. Just for fun, not a serious video. Doing my Top Gear presenter impressions lol!

Castlepoint during lockdown

Castlepoint shopping centre, near Bournemouth, is usually packed on a Saturday. Not so dueing covid lockdown. This is Sat 9 May 2020. Only the food shops & B&Q were open, everything else shut.
Moorgate, London, during Covid-19 lockdown

This was taken at around 16:00 on Thursday 7 May 2020. This area would normally be heaving with cyclists & pedestrians, but was almost deserted due to the virus lockdown. All shops, bars & restaurants closed.

Red Arrows again - opposite direction the next day!!

Yesterday's video showed the view of Red Arrows passing overhead, filmed facing South. So I decided to see if I could catch them the next day, filming North, and here it is! :-)

👍 just randomly came across this video I think you are right about the current share price being too low for the revenue. From ur podcast I personally think they could survive long enough to either be be bought out or for new share holders to hold for some profit. The struggling customer base worries me a tad but it's more likely to improve. more risky, but with the a small position size. Lets hope customers return so they can pay down debt. Peach pubs makes sense as an acquisition but I'm not sure if it's well timed given the business has been struggling. But hey ho
Like living in a film! Strange to see London devoid of people. Good to see you on here again. Last time we saw you you were on a boat doing an analysis of company reports for us! Would be good to see something like that again if you ever get the time! Nick
Post script - one thing I got wrong in this video, was that I didn't spot that the preference shares would be converted into ordinary shares, as part of the IPO. That was a real blunder on my part, for which I apologise. It just goes to show, that when you're skimming through an Admission Document, it's easy to miss something important. So hands up for that error. The gearing is actually a lot more reasonable than when I first looked.
A question, Paul. If the pre-opening costs will recur annually so long as the rollout continues, why are they property treated as exceptional?
Hi Bernard. Pre-opening costs are calculated specifically on a site by site basis. So as long as the basis for calculation is reasonable, then it's fine to treat those as non-underlying. After all, if the company stopped opening new sites, then pre-opening costs would immediately drop to zero.
@@paulrandomview Thank you, Paul. Most helpful as always. And so swift!
If you turn on the subtitles you will find that they are pretty accurate and for me at least entirely make up for not being able to read the text on screen. Thank you, Paul. Please do go on to Part 2.
Thanks Bernard! Actually, if you put it in cinema view, increase the resolution in settings to the maximum (480), and use a magnifying glass, then you can just about make out the text! I will try to improve the picture quality with part 2. Thanks for your positive comments! :-)
Thanks for mentioning the subtitles feature, I didn't know youtube could do that (am rather rusty on using this website). That could be really useful for deaf readers, as in the past they've asked me to do transcripts of audio. The subtitles would do the same job. I must try to speak a little more slowly & clearly though.
Excellent Video Paul, and excellent idea; I second the suggestion of the nq875 comment. Balance sheet & results analysis would be extremely helpful .I have already learnt a lot from your articles but that would fill in the gaps. Cheers.
Thanks! I'll give that some thought.
Great video Paul, would like to see more! Your approach and explanations are spot on. Maybe next up could be a walk through of a balance sheet/company results and/or how to value a company?
Great video Paul
Wow! you have three . . . . . . . . . . . . . . staplers.
Sorry about the technical problems at the end - my monitor went black for the last minute, then came back on again.
I love these SCVR extra videos! Please keep them going Paul!
Great report Paul, so many insights as to how to research a company thank you so much.
Director buying by Bob Morton at Porta... He is the same Bob Morton censured by the FCA in February for misleading share dealing at Armour Group.
Hi Paul Thanks for the video. I've also had XSG on my watchlist for a while but never invested. You're also right that the Naked Trader has been very bullish on the stock. I recall attending one of his seminars in May 2014, and that's the first I heard about it. Regret, not buying in, as its three bagged over this time, but am trying to avoid story stocks, as I've suffered losses recently. Trying to be disciplined and stick to value investing and GARP. Best wishes, Imran.
Hi Paul, great review, msi does look interesting. I really enjoy these, and it's a great advert for stockopedia, good to see how you use it. Interesting you mention vnet, I sold out recently, having made a small return, good point re the divis still being at 6% though.
Paul, many thanks for these vids and your Stockopedia value reports (which I read every day). Incredibly valuable. Best wishes.
Dear Paul, regarding ALY, there was something at the AGM i believe? Or some kind of meeting that happened recently. Essentially the shareholders rebelled to try and get the guy that is married to miss Malaysia out of the company but were just unsuccessful. Have a google, but this is probably the reason for the sell off.
Another great report. AVS does look very bullish. But it would take a brave man to buy a 26m mcap stock after a 27% rise.
Like the new videos, good extra content to the written reports
Hi Paul Really enjoying the videos...hope you find time to keep them coming! Rgds
Great commentary, Paul. Nice general analysis of the risk/reward in a potential Plus500 short.
Alcohol is not conducive to cognition :-].
Daniel Victor Absolutely Daniel! The evening's host, from Walbrook PR, concluded the formal presentation by COG by saying, "Those of you that want to try the product on an iPad, go over here. And those of you that want to cognitively impair yourselves, the bar is over here!"
Is it possible in the future to state at which point in the video you will talk about a particular company? e.g. 3:04 OncoWotsits.
Dan Adams Will try my best Dan, but it's a lot of work already, and there are only so many things I can remember to do
I suppose you could open a TNI short at 150p now? surely there is more downside to come, esp with all the uncertainty around?
steve whitaker Nah. I think if you miss the first big move down, then maybe best to not bother. But who can say.
Paul - have you seen this page: uk.advfn.com/p.php?pid=newsfront At least all the mining stocks are in one section you can skip past. Regards David
Love the reaction to the market cap of advanced oncowotsits - it's huge, oh well :-) please keep doing the vids, they are quite entertaining
Thanks Paul, i find these supplementary reports really useful.
