John Adams on Composing "Girls of the Golden West"
John Adams discusses his 2017 opera "Girls of the Golden West," which is set during the 1850s California Gold Rush. Adams and collaborator Peter Sellars created a colorful and realistic portrait of this tempestuous moment in history, drawing on harrowing real-life events and rich original sources from the era-letters, journals, newspaper articles, and miner song lyrics-to create the libretto.
The world premiere recording of "Girls of the Golden West" is out now on Nonesuch Records:

My friend, who accompanied me to the Amsterdam production in 2019, is heartbroken since the ‘Coronation dinner’ is cut in this recording. She dearly misses the onions and potatoes. Great that there is such a fine recording now.

Love the pulsing, yet tense off kilter jumpy orchestration here. The singing is glorious and catchy. I found myself humming along to the chorus, and as typical of Adams he creates lush blocks of nervous intrigue that informs and illustrates what one cant see on the stage.

John Adams as a composer speaks to me powerfully among many others and in fact more powerfully than most others. Thank you for your music, John.

This was excellent to hear this from the composer in his own words and spoken by him in his own space. Context is very important to having a good chance to understand someone who is living.

Shameful ! The Klinghoffer opera is an abomination …. Trash that humanizes the killers. A slap in the face to the Klinghoffer family
