Wow...there is a far easier way of lifting a canoe.

Good instructional video. I really appreciate the equipment I have rented from you in the past. My favorite canoes are the "Bells". The Seliga and the Northwoods. The life jackets and paddles that you send with them are truly the best. That seem to. E the place other companies cut corners.

Post some more if these please.

thank you Becky Rom for sharing your wonderful life story. I am so inspired by your work ethic and conservationism. Your growing up in Ely sounds so delightful. I watched your whole presentation and it was so interesting. Please ignore the haters. I am embarrassed for them. After listening to you, I feel you are too tough, to care about a few rude remarks, anyway. :) Glad you moved back to Ely, they are blessed to have you.

So, Dad came home in 1946 and "quickly built an outfitting business" where he rented gear to locals and tourists. BUT, all through the war, all Bill could think about was "conservation", so he pushed for an airplane ban by executive order of Pres. Truman. But, Becky was learning to fly Bill's plane when she was 16 and she was born in 1949. Bill was also landing his plane all over the Quetico because Becky said "you could do that back then". So, while he was at war, he was thinking about how to shut down the competition on the US side but flew all over Quetico dropping off parties and making good money? Hmmmmm. And, where in this video is that part where Becky was bullied in school? She wrote all about the horrors of her life in the Ely Echo not long ago and this video instead talks of her charmed life, flying planes, guiding people, and catching fish. I saw the pic of her cutting down the tree with an ax, and figure that was one of those few times she ever actually used an ax. It shows just like watching Obama fire a shotgun. Makes a nice picture for people who don't really do this stuff, I guess.

Boring to no end!!! What was the point? I thought the subject was what it was like to grow up in Ely!!! Not about the Rom family. For someone who is so interested in nature & the environment how could the business house bear cubs in front of the store in small cage???!!! I guess part of the advertising campaign??

I think your in the wrong business. I would suggest sales and forget about the whole rental aspect. People will always scratch and ruin rentals. That's just the way she goes.....speaking from experience. This video will steer potential clients away.

Why would you build something that is supposed to be used in nature if your afraid of it getting scratched, I bet they make you pay a deposit if it gets damaged, and what if the water is freezing or muddy and you cant see your footing? I'm dragging it through the rocks for sure, qrthrse1 makes a valid point as well, who would want to use something that you had to go through so much to prevent damage, Geez!

Well, if this guy is right, that means I would lose my bet with my brother. So I will deny logic and reason and scientific evidence in order to sustain my insupportbale faith in what I feel is right, although I have no evidence to back up my faith. Oh, wait a minute- that's my climate-change-denial stance! *This* guy makes total sense; nevermind.

Still very busy with outdoor activities, badminton, croquet, tennis and lots of bentgrass lawn care. Will be retired at the end of October!

Nobody puts a canoe in and out of the lakes like this video demonstrates. In the boundary waters you'd break your neck tripping over rocks, and to make your fall even worse, you'd have a canoe on your shoulders.

Thank you Dr for all the information. I found you via the web cams. I was surfing for info on Bears when one was wondering in my neighborhood. I didn't know what to do I didn't know who to talk to about it so I called the game commission. They came and put a big can kind of cage in the yard with Krispy Creams it didn't catch anything but a raccoon. I'm really glad it didn't after learning from you and everyone on Lily's FB page. So Thank you all! : )

There's NOTHING More Despicable than a "poacher"/animal abuser! There should be a standing worldwide bounty on Their heads! I know that many bear poachers&trappers are total scum who would do anything to get their 'game'-often to sell bear body parts for profit - often to IDIOT "Chinese herbalists", etc.! (I'd say put a triple-bounty on Chinese Herbalists!) Sorry to sound angry about this, but I think that these lowly people are just about at the bottom of the barrel! Thank God for Lynn Rogers!

Hey, Thanks Steve Piragis, for making and posting this vital series of videos with Lynn Rogers,-talking about the research related issues associated the work going on at the North American Bear Center! Bravo to all of the true"Bear Fans"! I'll certainly try to do whatever I can to help out! (by sending donations, and getting the word out to everyone that I know!) Awesome! Your dedication, and commitment to a very misunderstood animal. I hope more people will wake up to the plight of the bears!

I wish Lynn Rogers would respond to MPR's treatment of the hiker-black bear encounter reported today. Seems to me that both hiker & bear behaved exactly as we should expect. MPR's Kerri Miller suggested it was too bad the hiker wasn't better armed. Ignorant response Kerri!

These Mora knives are actually quite good--and a real bargain considering the high performance they deliver. This is the way we were shown how to lift our canoes at the Charles L Sommers Canoe Base in Ely. Made it relatively easy to lift even the heavier aluminum canoes. Thanks for sharing.

I actually grew up right down the street from him and was friends with his daughters. I didnt apprecitate what a great guy he is when it comes to bear until I was older. I have learned alot about bears because of him.
