I'm looking forward to playing it next week!
that thing looks like an absolute beast to play
@@singlereedenjoyer oh yeah it is!! Gotta tame this beast to sound like a beast💯
@ well you certainly have incredible tone
@ thank you so much. You’re too kind :)
Bravissimo!
Hello! I’m a high senior who loves to visit the symphony in Oklahoma. I hope to see you there!
@@jasonsamuels155 👍
As a Contrabass player, this part is pretty tedious. The strings have to make sure they don’t rush to aid the bassoons…
@@Cubestreak very interesting. Yeah correct me if I’m wrong but I know it sounds like the bassoons got the solo here with the strings accompanying in a way, but I’ve been told that it’s actually the bassoons who accompany the strings in this section.
Epic
Does anyone else notice how much his instrument sounds like Kontraforte instead of a Contrabassoon?
That’s absolutely awesome. I’ve played bassoon for two years now. Hopefully my tone gets as good as yours!
@@Fenway-beamng Now you’re being too kind. Thank you!! :)
Two contrabassoons playing in the same room at the same time...Isn't this illegal!

Gosh darn that was crazy
insane dude
Love it ❤

Hell, yeah! Your technique is impeccable.
Thank you so much!! I really love this instrument so much :)
コントラバスファゴット 頑張って下さい!
Thank you my friend!!
Wow, so many questions come to mind. When you learn to play this instrument, do you START with this instrument or some other smaller wind instrument and work your way up? Does it take years to build up the lung capacity and breath control to power this size instrument? Beautiful playing, by the way.
First off thank you for your kind comments, I truly appreciate them so much :) Secondly, to answer your questions; I have been playing the bassoon since I was in sixth grade, but I picked up the contrabassoon once I got to college. I have not played any other instrument besides bassoon and contrabassoon. I’ve been playing contrabassoon for about two years now and the reason why I have such good lung capacities because I work out a lot and do a lot of conditioning with running. I was once a football player back in my high school days, and those attributes have stuck with me as a musician quite excellently. Nonetheless, my enthusiasm is what keeps me going, and I appreciate that aspect of my life.
Thank you for the explanation.@@jakeajg7
Bravo! This is amazing!
You’re so kind Dr. Baughman!! This duet will live with us forever!! :)
I wish I could play contrabassoon
As a trumpeter I can confirm the basson is hard I’ve tried it before so my condolences to you 🫡
Sweet! Killin it.
How long is the extension?
@@andrewderrett9595 according to Richard Bobo’s Low A Extension guide, he used a 3-inch mailing tube and cut a triangular wedge out of the tube. I believe the length is somewhere around 16 3/4 inches long or 425 mm.
It's very difficult, well done bro 👍🏻👍🏻
Love your playing
As a bassoonist, I want to play that low b flat so bad
When I first started playing contrabassoon, I was the exact same way lol. Now that I’ve played it so much I believe it’s more impressive to play high notes.
@@jakeajg7 oh lol you can buy ona ronness extended register book
@@SweeperGT haha yeah he’s nice a guy indeed
Contra-Bassoon vs. Great-Bass Shawm! New vs. Old !!
Please do mahler 9 and 2 all the bassoon parts. Mahler 9 has a really good contrabassoon part. I play English horn and oboe btw.
Could you do mahler 9, 2, 7 on the same software but play along with the score? I love this piece.
Nicely done!
I love your tone. Have you ever heard of Steve Braunstein former contrabassoon and bassoon with San Francisco?
Why thank you so much!!! It truly means a lot!! And yes, I have heard of Steve Braunstein. We follow each other on Facebook and he knows my Professor Rod Ackmann.
@@jakeajg7 the one that appeared on all the Michael Tilson Thomas recordings of mahler symphonies. He even played a concerto written by his former conductor MTT in 2002.
@@ZackSansing wow that’s amazing!! Thanks for sharing!!
@@jakeajg7 please do the mahler 9 and 2 symphonies where you play all the bassoon and contrabassoon parts and put it on TH-cam. Ethan Nylander made all the flute parts for rite in this video m.th-cam.com/video/2un48g5zzxg/w-d-xo.html. Could you do the similar thing for mahler 9 and 2 with just you playing all the bassoon parts including contrabassoon? I would appreciate it.
Ryan HS is in the district im going to be in next year and im doing football and band so this is really cool to me! keep up the good work too
Glad to hear it. Just be awesome and enjoy the high school days.
an incredibly difficult instrument and he played fantastic!
I got to give this guy some credit for playing one of the hardest instruments and being able to play the song of this great country so well. Good job and keep loving America🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much for your kindness.
I’ve never seen someone standup while playing an bassoon. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Absolute boss
What octave sheet music is that?

BASSOON LETS GOO!
WOW great job hello from Texas 😊
That’s impressive! I ever seen a bassoon player play the star spangled banner
Nice sound and vibrato. Well done .
Yeah Contrabass Clarinet And Contrabassoon
Great tone and phrasing! I would suggest ending the trills on the same starting note unless otherwhise noted to preserve its harmonic interval with the next note, and not slurring the arpeggios near the middle of the excerpt to keep them light. Otherwise, your playing is excellent. Keep up the good work my guy 💪
Thank you so much!! The audition is today as I’m writing this comment so I’ll keep your comments in mind. Just wanna say thank you for all your the advice you’ve given me and told me. You’re truly so kind😊
other players may laugh but thats a hard instrument to play
Indeed, not easy to play a solo in front of a stadium on the bassoon
Great work! One thing: pay attention to the phrase marks vs slurs. It may be just me, but seems like you are slurring the 4rts tied to 8ths with the following note where it is not notated. Again, it may just be me: you should check professional recordings of the bassoon part to be certain 👍
You could use with more dynamic differene at the end and articulation differences between stacatto and stacatissimo, but still good. Upper register tone was a bit iffy, but it always is. Keep it up 💪
I see and understand. Perhaps more color with the dynamic difference? And yeah what’s odd with me is that I know the upper register but it’s pretty tricky to always be in tune up lol💀
@@jakeajg7not only with you 😆 it really requires a fabulous reed but even then it just sound squeaky anyways
@@lukaslawrence8863 yep very true indeed
1st trill was iffy but good nevertheless! Good work 💪
I do agree about that trill lol. Originally I was playing a Bb note and trilling the G key, but then after I uploaded this video; I tried fingering an Ab note and trilling the G key and it worked a lot better. But I do appreciate your honest feedback, it helps a lot.
Anytime! As I said I'm always willing to give out advice. I'm not a bassoon player but I understand that the trill should be from G - A # / B b, so what is played in the vid is *technically* correct, although it almost sounded like an A - A # / B b trill. If a G - A b / G # trill works for you, than by all means use it - after all, it is better to play musically at the cost of accuracy than the other way around :)
@@aarohan.evades.taxes. indeed👍
finally, someone is playing it with passion
Indeed, a comment like this is one that I truly strive for. Being passionate is what separates normal musicians from extraordinary musicians. Thank you for your kind words!!
awesome
Thanks!! :)
Very clean tone!
Thanks so much!! Clean tone is sometimes because of the contrabassoon reed. Sometimes to “Reedy” or too “Ducky.” I’m fortunate for a comment like yours😇
@@jakeajg7This concert was the first one i ever heard in person (not including rite of spring in the same concert lol) This was very good
