There is a basic flaw is this argument. Once Abhimanyu got in, he will have enemies in front and back. He will then have to keep killing enemies all around him. Your assumption is that Abhimanyu keeps going forward without having to worry about enemies to his flanks (sides) and his back. That is why he wanted the Pandavas to follow his lead. You yourself mentioned that the lines got thicker with more number of soldiers as one moved to the next level. And they kept moving in circles which would have made it difficult to find out where the center was. It was only because of his fighting ability that he managed to reach the center, but was already weakened. The result was his death.
