Coded Notes

Hey everyone. I'm Glenn, a clarinet and saxophone teacher since 2001. My day job may be in software, but I've been teaching so long, I've made this channel to put some of my experience into a digital format. This channel's is dedicated to my current students, whom I make videos for to help explain their homework. Along the way though, I try and make content about other aspects of clarinet and saxophone that I hope you find useful.

Stay by The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber arr. solo clarinet
มุมมอง 36010 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a solo clarinet arrangement of The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber's Stay. I've tried to take advantage of the clarinet's agility by capturing both the base and treble lines, but also added elements to exemplify the clarinet's character. I've marked the tempo down from the original, but if you want a challenge, this arrangement aligns with the original synth pop version. If you would like a...
Légère French Cut: Unboxing and Reaction
มุมมอง 2.1K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
For something light-hearted and fun, here's another unboxing video (yeah, lame). Anyway, Légère teased me with their latest Légère French Cut reed because the stated characteristics appeared similar to my go-to Vandoren V12. I use the European Cut for home practise, so I had to give their newest release a go. Sure, I go on and on, but hey, it's a reaction video, so you've got to do the video in...

No. 33 is a Carl Baermann piece in the Pamela Weston compiled 50 Classical Studies for clarinet. I was asked to record this one some time ago but have only just managed to get some time to put it together. Honestly, I spent more time on this than I care to admit, but sometimes you just have to go with one's talent at the time, so here we go :) Hopefully this TH-cam video is of value to someone....

Killing In the Name for solo saxophone

I took on the challenge of writing a solo saxophone arrangement of Killing In the Name by Rage Against the Machine. Yessirrrrr, beautiful piece- well done.
Really appreciate these videos, thank you! You're a wonderful clarinetist. Blessings from Texas.🍁🌞
Thanks. Hopefully I can get some more out in the not too distant future.
what clarinet and reed is this? its very high quality
The clarinet in this video is an old LeBlanc LL, I think it was from the 80s going by the case, but must have gotten lost or something, because it was sold brand new to me in 1998. The mouthpiece is a Vandoren B45 and the reed is a Vandoren V12 3 1/2.

Amazing content :) I don’t know why your videos are so underrated. Please new content :)))
Thanks! I'd love to add new content, but my now 11 month old son has required me to lower it in life's priority list. I'm really keen to get back into it though.
@ Totally get it! Enjoy the time with your son, and we’ll be here whenever you’re ready to jump back in. :)
Great video! I'm 41 and just started playing a thrift store clarinet 3 weeks ago. I'm learning how to play it because my 10 year old just started learning the Alto Sax 3 weeks ago. We both play and learn her band songs together. We record weekly our progress, which is a blast to rewatch together. Music is something everyone can bond over no matter their age.
I love your blue dragon!

Thank you this helped a lot but could you explain how you play like that on the mouthpiece alone? I can do it a little but not like that you even did an arpeggio😭

Cool, just grabbed a copy! Stumbled uppon it to train the intervals and ryhtm on Tenor, but the overal piece is really nicely arranged
You've just made my day 😀 Enjoy!
This has gotta be one of the most helpful and niche videos on youtube, I am playing this for my regional honor band, and this video has been so helpful
Glad to have helped. Niche definitely seems an appropriate way of describing my content 😀
Can you do the Rubank Advance Vol1 Ex. #19 (In sax book)??
Thanks. This book should come with mp3's, if it doesn't now a days. Also, it's helpful hear both parts individually and then together. Many thanks again.
I'd love to have the time and record all the pieces. I have a slightly better set up these days.
What note is your clarinet?
What model of clarinet? It's an old LeBlanc LL, I think it was from the 80s going by the case, but must have gotten lost or something, because it was sold brand new to me in 1998.
Cheer~~acting or done quickly and without thought or care.(but nice)😅
Love it❤❤❤ can u Shane the notes? La partitura de saxo alto
The version of "In a Sentimental Mood" I played comes from the book "Classic Jazz for Saxophone - Wise Publications". It's a really good book because it puts a lot of the classic jazz standards like this one into a friendly key for beginner-intermediate players. It's good bang for your buck. I updated the link in the description of the book I have, but I think there's a different edition.
Excellent explanation
I lover it. I played the clarinet for many years and no one ever told me how to produce a good tone. Very much appreciated .
Very helpful! Thanks.
This was helpful. Thanks.
Thank you, very much appreciated! I’m getting the hang of it much better now. Teddybear and pineapple help a lot. I think it’s one of those stepping stone pieces for me , both with understanding of rhythm and also pinkies left and right getting a workout!
Why I cannot play low notes straight especially B flat , then C # and B but if I am coming gradualy from low note it's ok I am trying to play saxophone now for more than 6 years, same fricken problem. I feel like just throwing it, especially when I am told that you have to spend $100 to repair a sax if it needs it can you answer my question please , or anyone who can help
Are you able to slowly descend to a low Bb? If you can, I suggest stepping down from say, G, but as you get to lower notes, tongue them a few times to make sure your embouchure is settled. Assuming your instrument is totally fine, it could just be you haven't established the muscle memory required to know exactly what embouchure you need to hit those notes in a one-off situation. If you suspect pads aren't closing properly, shine a torch down your instrument with the keys down and see if there's any light escaping.
Spooky sax
What exactly does lip gliss mean? I have it in a piece and all the other clarinets seem to know what it is and how to do it but I don't
A glissando is 'to glide' from one pitch to another. A "lip gliss" is to do a slide such that all the notes blur/bend into each other creating something similar to a trombone slide. This is typically what the clarinet at the beginning of Rhapsody in Blue uses. It's a bit of a misnomer because it's not just the lip that's involved in allowing the player to accomplish this. If a lip gliss is too difficult, the fall back is just to move chromatically through the notes (i.e. move by semitones). If the music is fast enough, you could probably just get away with any scale of notes because the composer is generally after the effect of the 'blur of notes' Lip glisses aren't too common; you certainly wouldn't want an entire clarinet section doing them in a wind band. It's used mainly for solos in jazz, klezmer, folk type pieces. A regular chromatic scale is by far the most common thing to do when you see the squiggly lines in music.
@@CodedNotes thank you

Hi Glenn, thanks for your amazing videos, very helpful. I’m trying to work out James Rae’s in a dream and then happened upon misty which is a bit similar in that it has lots of triplets and a similar dreamy sound. My last music teacher told me before the last concert I was a part of that it was ok if I didn’t play

My son has found this so helpful in learning this piece and you play it so beautifully - thank you!
Glad to hear! It's a great piece which I haven't used in a while, so your comment has reminded me to give it to one of my students the next time I see him.
This is nice advice. Helpful for sure, thank you.
Thanks yes the French cut is a bit softer than The European. Sounds nice on your Muse clarinet ? God bless you Bill. Uk
Yes, that is indeed a Selmer Muse. An upgrade from my Le Blanc that I'd been playing since 1999. The key positions of the Selmer were more similar to the Le Blanc compared to the high end Buffet clarinets; just enough difference that I kept missing the keys on the Buffets when I was trying them out. That's muscle memory for you. The Muse seemed like a good choice; it had a more silkier feel, which resonated with me when I got it.
👍🌹
1:28 lmao what was the honk hahahaha love it ya sound like a goose but with chops like that ya ain't no goose chief, great playing!
I had the same issue until I I did the same I was able to control it better 😅
Try coming down a size on the Reed. It should help with that .
Thx from the cool and informative video. I am a sax player of more than 14 plus years give or take. I just purchased a student Bb Clarinet. Is it difficult to transition to Clarinet.? I mean I still be playing the Sax but to learn the Clarinet is it harder? Or the music sheet music for Clarinet harder to learn? Sorry for the multiple questions but I really like the Clarinet. Thank You
Thanks. I'll admit I'm a clarinetist first, saxophonist second, but it's not a big deal to transition from saxophone to clarinet. Sure, there are some minor fingering differences and the open tone holes are unforgiving, but to get a sound out and play some tunes isn't a big transition. What is a surprise to saxophone players moving to clarinet though, is the different physical requirement on the embouchure. If your desired sound is a New Orleans or dixieland style, then the physicality difference isn't as much; getting a Benny Goodman sound, a bit harder still, trying to get that rich warm classical sound, now that's a physical ask. When going from saxophone to clarinet, you'll likely hear the tone differences as demonstrated at about the 3:30 mark. Anyone who teases that making a good tone should be effortless hasn't been to a Cirque du Soleil performance to see how easy the acrobats make their feats look :)
This is very helpful thank you! The "tough blow" & "good luck with that octave jump" cracked me up. Thank you so much.
Hey! I like it. It is good excersise for jumps. Thanks, I'll try to master it next week 😅❤
I practised this for ages and could never quite pull it off 100%. I had a lot of fun with it though. I'd love to hear someone else master it.
Can we pleaaaase get #15? I am dying here... Also Niemann - Andantino Rubank Advanced Method Saxophone Vol. 1 Thank you!
#15 is a good one. I'll see if I can put something together before the end of the week (I've been very time poor lately).
How's this: th-cam.com/video/jeG06Ao-frE/w-d-xo.html ? I got a bit carried away and made the video really long, but the playthrough is at the beginning.
I don't particularly like the French cut
Just from a tone perspective, or response? Given that they're narrower than the European Cut, I could imagine them not fitting as well to a lot of mouthpieces.
@@CodedNotes response for sure, I do notice a more resonant tone on Europeans but it's less consistent then french cut. But the real difference is in the response. I guess I just got used to the response of the European cut.
Enjoyed that (I heard that "Golden Wedding" in there!) and thanks for sharing your experience. I play legit and jazz, too, and use a more open mpc on jazz, so have to use softer reeds on that mpc. I just checked, and it turns out I've been playing the "Classic" cut, which surprised me, since I was thinking I was playing European. Like you, my normal reed is a Vandoren V12, so it sounds like the French cut will be more compatible with that.
Thanks, that means you made it all the way to the end! My earliest clarinet influences were Woody Herman's The Golden Wedding, and Artie Shaw's Begin the Beguine, both really old school. Honestly, I don't change my setup between classical and jazz; I just grab a middle of the row mouthpiece and decent strength reed then tweak my embouchure to fit the style. I had a go of someone else's "Classic" cut but it either wasn't as good (subjective), or it was getting a big worn out. I ended up getting a French Cut 4.0 sent to me by way of Légère's exchange program, and it was closer to what I was expecting, but it is definitely gives you more of a work out :) The 3.75 is my easier going practise reed. I still can't shake the zingy sound I hear from them though, but if I can get the reed exactly aligned and then work the embouchure just right, I can dampen that sound. Cane is far more forgiving with positioning.
I play it a little differently to the book I’m learning from, in Learn a new tune a day book 1
The only copy of A Tune A Day for saxophone I have is a reprint of the original 1945 version. Needless to say, it's very old school and doesn't have Mango Walk. I should pick myself up a copy of the revamped version and see how much better it is.
wow, thanks for this. I am new to clarinet and have watched a few you tube videos.....suddenly one sentance from you and my tone sounds better.....don't make your bottom lip too tense. 👍
Glad to hear. Sometimes it just takes a little titbit from some random source to discover a different approach that helps.
