My little hub about trains and transport based primarily in the Tyne and Wear county of England crossing into stations, trains, trams, buses and alike! I'm also interested in design and concepts so you may see that cross into videos. I have permission from Nexus to film, this is for non-commercial free use with no monetisation.
In 2024, I began this channel after experiencing the London Underground for the first time which ended up in me garnering a greater interest in trains and particularly my local Tyne and Wear Metro which I had already been a commuting on for over a decade and transport as a whole.
Hope you enjoy what you see, thanks for having a read!

*tone* New Tyne and Wear Metro Class 555015 @ Howdon On Test
Yesterday I spotted a Not In Service on the move so I thought why not spot it here at Howdon to get a honk. Turns out that was a good idea, driver had a big grin on his face as he honked the horn, he must've enjoyed it! (face blurred for his privacy!)
Fun fact: Class 555's top speed is the same as the old stock, 80km/h or 50mph. Here at this level crossing, they are restricted to 15km/h until they have cleared the crossing so that the driver can perform a quick stop just in case!

Hi folks! I took a little trip to Glasgow lately and have this short treat for you. I'd have liked to show off more but I wasn't on the Subway a whole lot. These new trains are really cool and perform excellently, a very impressive reference of what to loosely expect on our 555s. Fun fact: The top speed of Stadler's G3 stock for the Glasgow Subway is 58km/h or 36mph! This seems slow but it's mo...

Why are so many needed to sit and do nothing but look at their phones. Why the waste of public funds.
@@TC-qd1zw I don't understand what you're trying to say but it's absolutely not a waste of public funds, it's a long needed replacement for trains as old as 50. They're being tested for a reason.
I feel very old, had a ride on the first test train back in the late 70’s before the metro opened and now their replacements 40+ years later.
Im itching to see these in service after testing.
@@Lighting_Desk Same, shouldn't be too long!
I would like to know how many seats there are compared to the old trains as it looks like they are doing away with seats and just making more space to stand, with next to nothing to hold onto or rest against.....anyone ever seen cattle hearded in them trucks to their slaughter ?
@@Toonstav 128 seats on the old trains, 108 on the new ones. There isn't "nothing", you can lean against the panels and there's two grab poles every 2-3 seats and 2 carriages have ceiling poles throughout. The poles at the doors are double poles too so many people can hold onto it. It is also worth noting that there will be a better frequency so it will often be less busy
@@metrotylerwhat if I would rather look out the window rather than awkwardly stare at someone
@rhysrail You already have to awkwardly stare at someone if it's busy because every seat in the current fleet still faces each other. Just use your phone like you already do.
@ yes but most of the time it’s not that bust and you can look out the window
40 years on and it looks the same inside as the old tired trains.
@@LAMF25 Different seating layout, it's a train, not sure what you expected. Green colours? Hexagonal shape?
The exterior design isn't that much different to the old trains, apart from the new cab ends and step on the doors.
If it's not broke why fix it? They serve a purpose and are comfortable enough for how long you are on them but also easy to keep clean and maintain. It's a balance that's likely about right with the current metro.
@@ZG0002 Come off it, the current reliability is terrible. Delays and trains out of service every day. And they are filthy inside. The trains are overcrowded at peak times and having less seats won't help this.
Can see an awful lot of elderly people having to stand as there is a distinct lack of seating, absolutely ridiculous.
@@andsomeenery2964 Happens on literally every other main subway station like the London Underground. There's only 20 less seats and a lot of places to hold on. The solution is nice people need to give up their seats for older folk. There are priority seats marked in grey where you should give up your seat.
far more accessible and easier to get to a seat with these designs than the 40 year old non compliant stock - if youve ever visited the capital you will see the design works quite well - in fact there is far more room for elderly with walking aides because of the layout as opposed to having to clamber through 3 other peoples legs
Perhaps some kind hearted younger people will give up their seats when they see some oldies struggling!
@@metrotylerthe difference is in London it’s always busy, here it is unnecessary and the routes are long so it acts closer to a commuter rail network, i much prefer regular seating as I gives a feel of privacy and means you can look out the window

Lol I’ve never been on the metro in Newcastle but why does Newcastle have a metro, does it stop at further places that buses can’t get to?
@@TheSquareTiger Why does the London Underground exist when buses go everywhere? Simple answer: it allows you to get around better and efficiently. Newcastle has a lot of people trying to get to the coast or into the city centre and the Metro connects a lot of east-end urban areas. It's quite useful but could really do with being extended
It should have continued from St James right through the West End, but I can't see that ever happening now with all of those tall buildings with deep foundations in the way!
It connects three major cities in the northeast, Sunderland, Gateshead and the toon to the coast and beaches at Whitley Bay and South Shields
@@PaulM_aka_4c21 Gateshead isn't classed as a city, just town, and looking at the state of the town centre, it's easy to see why!! And I live in Gateshead!
have you not been on it yet?
Nice PACIS system!
Nice train metro video capture
New train is beautiful.
There's not a lot of seats and not many handles to hold onto (no over hanging bars/handles)
There are as many handles on 555 as there are in the metrocars (in fact, there's MORE if you include the fact the double grab pole is TWO poles). There are over hanging poles in this train in 2 of the 5 cars. There are only 24 less seats on 555 than in the dual-metrocar configuration. That has 128 while 555 has 104. This will still seat *more than enough passengers* while supporting twice as many disabled passengers, more buggies and more bikes. It also offers 120 more passengers to STAND meaning the amount of space and amount of passengers that can be on is greater Please don't hit at decisions without acknowledging why they were made. This is generally an upgrade for busier times. In less busy times, there will be more than enough seats for all passengers. The point of a Metro is to get people around, not be a first class experience.
@metrotyler so less seats and more standing passengers with less handles dotted around then. They're definitely an improvement on the current metros, but when they're busy that's a lot more people with less to hold onto. That's not a negative criticism of "the decisons that have been made", just a genuine concern
@@Charlieb82 There are more grab poles than on the existing fleet, and considering the ratio against the seats, the grab poles will be easier to use anyway. I don't see a major concern to this - the tube has worked just as well on a very similar setup for a long time, these new trains also have a lot of spots to lean against if a grab pole is not accessible.
@@Charlieb82 they appear to be of a similar design to the london overground stock - it appears to be the design for short haul suburban stock - plenty of standing room (more than the existing fleet) which is ideal if your only going 2 -3 stops - which tbf a lot of the commuter traffic is - its not a luxury pullman carriage or intercity design. the design and grab rails are there and are ample - the design benefits will be noticed during peak hours .
@metrotyler some people just like to moan for moanings sake!
The old trains need to be scrapped soon , they have served us well but it's time for modern trains
Some already have been scrapped, we're barely hanging onto these old metrocars

They make more motor noise than the old trains, but yes they will feel smoother and quieter overall
@@Matty12333They don't at all honestly. When the 599s make the shaking sound they are far louder. Note how most of the noise caused in this video is due to that rattling 599. Also note that 555 isolates more sound as the windows aren't open

Hi, do you know what time the driver training and test runs normally take place. And on which parts of the network?
So I know a little bit but not all (I am not a Nexus staff member or anything, just a silly 18-year-old) 1. Driver training appears to be on 7 days a week. As for particular times, I would say anywhere from 9-6 is a definite as I've seen them within those times but it may extend on later and/or earlier than that. 2. Train testing, to my understanding, was on weekdays only and should still be for units under test at the moment 3. I've seen test trains going between South Gosforth and Pelaw and between St James and I think also Pelaw. It seems they go back to South Gosforth, terminate and then continue. This may not entirely be true though. Driver testing, not sure, driver test trains are specifically set to "Not In Service". There's some information on RailUK forums but it's a bit limited to those specifics. I will ask in forums for you and find out!

a class 994 vs a class 555 💀
I think they're classified as 599 now. 994 was the old classification. Also, as much as I never captured it, I have gotten to see a 555 and 599 battle it out for acceleration as they left simultaneously. The 555 may as well have been a bullet in comparison
Ive worked on that one whilst on work experience at the depot the cabs are so much better for the driver
It definitely looks that way. They get a lot more information, space, AC, heating etc. This entire train is a big improvement!
The new fleet will be in services by the end this year, which is December
Yeah, so I've heard. They've already gotten approval on a few models, such as 003 and 020. I think the last one they need to finish daylight testing on might be 002, and then the handover can be finalised.
