Tears as I went to a Catholic school and we always sang this or heard it before exams or other. Many moons ago. Love it 😊
While reading Colossians 3:16 {msg} during devotions today (3/24/2020) this song came to mind. I hadn't heard this for a looooong time. made me cry also. What a gem of a song. First heard this back in my Caribbean hometown in the Bahamas. I always loved it <3
How I have long to draw you
when did they sing this?
Where have you been my old friend??
Found this today on January 28, 2022. Flooded with memories of my parents, of better times of great hope in God. We need this now more than ever. Am 70 years old and filled with sorrow for all good souls in this world, young and old, whose very lives are all in danger now by great global evil. Have mercy on us, Lord Jesus.
You think this is bad. I have a photo as my computer wallpaper of "liberated" slaves in South Carolina in 1861, obviously just in from picking cotton, one Union soldier in the picture, no rank on his uniform, some sort of political soldier, two "liberated slaves" are holding something on their heads as if to portray their African capabilities. The caption that I found with the photo says, "Photograph by Henry P. Moore at Hilton Head, South Carolina seven-hundred-acre Fish Haul Plantation belonging to Thomas Drayton depicts slaves who were in the process of being freed by the federal government." What does "in the process of" mean? That sounds like a fairly recent equivocation, but still, we don't have slavery any more, in fact, we haven't had a good war since Obama. I'll also wager that the original version of this song ("profound '70s Catholic folk song") had a really annoying liberal self-righteous tone, speaking as a lapsed convert to Catholicism and a musician.
Sung by the family of Maria von Trapp just as she had given birth to her child. Her story is the film The Sound of Music.

I sang along today, 16 May 2015. (Good thing you didn't hear my voice:) I am a house-bond Catholic, and used this hymn for today's Office Of Readings in the Liturgy Of The Hours. Very appropriate for the days leading up to Pentecost. Thank you
